Dr. Chhaya Sawhney is an Assistant Professor of Linguistics in the Department of Elementary Education, Gargi College. She has been part of the department since its inception in 1997 and seen it grow. She teaches two theory papers: Nature of Language and Language Acquisition to the I and II year students besides taking a colloquia on Children’s Literature and the Art of Story Telling with the II year students. She is also involved in the I year School Contact Program & IV year Internship Program in which she mentors & guides the students on their lesson plans, class room transactions, reflections and mandatory projects.

She has a Phd in Linguistics from University of Delhi and is a gold medalist. She has authored and edited school textbooks in English, taken workshops for in-service school teachers, organized workshops for students in linguistics and seminars in Story Telling and Theatre in Education as the B.El.Ed Association Convener in the academic sessions 2012-2013 & 2013-2014. She is also the convener of the Language & Linguistics Committee of the B.El.Ed Restructuring Program and a core member of the committee. She has also actively collaborated with The Regional English Language Office, The American Embassy, New Delhi to organize a 10 months training program in English Language for the B.El.Ed students.

She has been an active convener of the college street play society, Kshitij for the last 4 years and has helped the students with mentoring & logistics of competitions. She was the convener of the DU Innovative Project, Daastan-e-Nisvaan: Stories of Women in the year 2012-2013 in which along with three other faculty members from other departments facilitated & mentored 10 students to research, script and produce a play with the help of experts.

Her areas of interest include language education and story telling.
