Friday 15 January 2021 MORNING Time of Issue: 0745 hours IST ALL INDIA WEATHER SUMMARY AND FORECAST BULLETIN

Significant Weather Features

♦ A cyclonic circulation lies over Southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Maldives area in lower & middle tropospheric levels and a trough runs from this cyclonic circulation to Comorin area in lower tropospheric levels. Under its influence; scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with moderate thunderstorm & lightning very likely over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe and Lakshadweep area during next 24 hours and reduction in rainfall activities over these regions thereafter.

♦ Conditions are becoming favourable for cessation of Northeast Monsoon rains over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe and adjoining areas of coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema and South Interior Karnataka around 19th January, 2021.

♦ Due to the prevalence of dry north/northwesterly winds, minimum temperatures very likely to remain below normal over most parts of Northwest India during next 2 days. Hence, Dense to very dense fog at a few pockets and Cold Day/Severe Cold Day conditions in isolated pockets very likely over Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar during next 2 days. Cold Wave/Severe Cold Wave and Ground Frost conditions in isolated pockets also very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and north Madhya Pradesh during next 2 days.

Main Weather Observations

Rain/Thundershowers observed (from 0830 hours IST to 1730 hours IST of yesterday): at a few places over Lakshadweep and Tamilnadu, Puducherry &

Karaikal.

Rainfall recorded (from 0830 hours IST to 1730 hours IST of yesterday) (1 cm or more): Kodaikanal and Coonoor -2 each; Minicoy Islands -1.

♦ Yesterday, Cold Wave to Severe Cold Wave conditions were observed at isolated places over East Rajasthan and Cold Wave conditions at many places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Uttar Pradesh and isolated places over Madhya Pradesh.

Fog observed (at 0530 hours IST of today): Dense to very dense Fog in many pockets over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Uttar Pradesh; in isolated pockets over northwest Rajasthan and Dense Fog in many pockets over Bihar; in isolated pockets over Assam & Meghalaya and Tripura.

Visibility reported (at 0530 hours IST of today) (200 metre or less): Ganganagar, Patiala, Ambala, Bareilly, Bahraich, Lucknow & Gorakhpur-25 m each;

Amritsar, Chandigarh, Sultanpur, Varanasi, Patna, Bhagalpur, Purnea & Tezpur-50 m each; Hissar, Delhi (Palam & Safdarjung), Gaya, Dibrugarh &

Kailashahar-200 m each.

Maximum Temperature Departures as on 14-01-2021: Maximum temperatures were appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at a few places over Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Konkan & Goa and at isolated places over Uttarakhand an; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most places over Marathawada; at many places over Vidarbha; at a few places over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgistan, Baltistan & Muzaffrabad, Gujarat State, Telangana, Coastal Karnataka and Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam; at isolated places over Madhya Maharashtra & North Interior Karnataka. They were markedly below normal (-5.1°C or less) at many places over Punjab and Bihar; at a few places over East Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at a few places over Andaman, Nicobar Islands, Gangetic West Bengal, West Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka, and Kerala & Mahe; at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya, Odisha and Lakshadweep and near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the highest maximum temperature of 36.8°C was reported at Mangalore (Coastal Karnataka) over the country.

♦ Minimum Temperature Departures as on 14-01-2021: Minimum temperatures were appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at a few places over Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Telangana, Odisha, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Coastal Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most places over Konkan & Goa and Coastal Andhra Pradesh

& Yanam; at many places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe and Telangana and at a few places over Himachal Pradesh. They were markedly below normal (-5.1°C or less) at a few places over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad; appreciably below normal (- 3.1°C to -5.0°C) at many places over East Madhya Pradesh; at a few places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal; at isolated places over Uttar Pradesh and Saurashtra & Kutch; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at many places over East Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh; at a few places over Punjab and at isolated places over West Rajasthan. Yesterday, the lowest minimum temperature of 1.8°C was reported at Narnaul (Haryana) over the plains of the country.

Meteorological Analysis (Based on 0530 hours IST)

♦ The cyclonic circulation over Southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Maldives area extending upto 5.8 km above mean sea level persists. The trough from this cyclonic circulation to Comorin area extending upto 1.5 km above mean level also persists.

♦ The trough at 0.9 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 88°E to the north of Lat. 26°N persists.

♦ The cyclonic circulation over north Madhya Maharashtra & neighbourhood between 1.5 & 2.1 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The cyclonic circulation over east Bihar and adjoining Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim extending upto 0.9 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ Isolated to scattered rain/thundershowers likely over Northeast India and isolated rain/thundershowers Nicobar Islands. Isolated rain/snow also likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzzafarabad.

SIGNIFICANT WEATHER FEATURES

♦Movement of easterly waves has caused fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/thunderstorms over extreme south Peninsular India and Lakshadweep islands along with isolated intense to very intense rainfall activity over south Peninsular India; it has also caused isolated to scattered rainfall/thunderstorm activity over Andaman & Nicobar islands, northern parts of south Peninsula, Maharashtra and southern parts of Gujarat State during the week.

♦Movement of a Western Disturbance has caused Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall/thunderstorm activity over Western Himalayan Region and isolated to scattered rainfall/thunderstorm activity over adjoining plains of Northwest India during the first half of the week.

♦Remnants of Western Disturbance have caused isolated to scattered rainfall/thunderstorm activity over parts of Northeast India and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim during the week.

Heavy Rainfall:

♦Heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places had occurred over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikkal and Kerala & Mahe on one day each during the week.

♦Heavy to very heavy rainfall had occurred at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikkal on two days; over Coastal and North Interior Karnataka on one day each during the week.

♦Heavy rainfall had occurred at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikkal and South Interior Karnataka on three days each; over Kerala & Mahe and Coastal Karnataka on two days each; over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Rayalaseema on one day each during the week.

Fog:

♦Dense to very dense fog had occurred at many places over West Rajasthan on one day;at a few places over Haryana, Chnadigarh & Delhi and East Uttar Pradesh on one day each;at isolated places over West Rajasthan on four days, East and West Uttar Pradesh on three days each, over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and East Rajasthan on two days each, over Punjab, West Madhya Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikkal on one day each during the week.

♦Dense fog had occurred at a few places over Punjab, East & West Rajasthan, East & West Madhya Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim on one day each; at isolated places over Uttarakhand on four days, over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Punjab on three days each, over Jammu Kashmir & Ladakh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and Odisha on two days each, over East Rajasthan, East Uttar Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Assam & Meghalaya and Himachal Pradesh on one day each during the week.

♦Cold day to severe cold day conditions had occurred at most places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Punjab on one day each; at a few places over West Uttar Pradesh on two days and over Haryana, Chandigarh

& Delhi and East Uttar Pradesh on one day each; at isolated places over West Uttar Pradesh on two days and over Punjab, East & West Rajasthan and East Uttar Pradesh on one day each during the week.

♦Cold day conditions at a few places with severe cold day conditions at isolated places had occurred over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and East Uttar Pradesh on one day each during the week.

♦Cold day conditions had occurred at many places over Punjab on one day; at isolated places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Punjab on two days each and over West Rajasthan on one day during the week.

Cold Wave

♦Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions at isolated places have occurred over West Rajasthan on one day during the week.

♦Cold wave conditions had occurred at many places over Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi on one day each; at a few places over East Rajasthan on one day; at isolated places over West Rajasthan, East Rajasthan and Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi on one day each during the week.

♦The lowest minimum temperature of 0.2oC had been recorded at Ganganagar(West Rajasthan) on 13th Government of India

METEOROLOGICALANALYSIS

♦ Last week’s Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan & neighbourhood extending upto 4.5 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 74°E to the north of Lat.32°N has moved away northeastwards on 7th January 2021.

♦ Last week’s cyclonic circulation over central parts of South Arabian Sea and adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean lay over Southeast Arabian Sea and seen between 1.5 km & 4.5 km above mean sea level on 7th January 2021; it persisted over the same area and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 8th, upto 0.9 km above mean sea level on 9thand upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 10th; it lay over Southeast and adjoining Southwest Arabian Sea and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 11th;it has moved away westwards on 12th January 2021.

♦ Last week’s trough in low level easterlies from Comorin area to north Tamil Nadu was seen as a cyclonic circulation over south Tamilnadu coast & neighbourhood and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 7th January 2021; it lay over Sri Lanka & neighbourhood and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 8th; it persisted over the same area and extended upto 0.9 km above mean sea level on 9th;it has merged with the cyclonic circulation over Equatorial Indian Ocean & adjoining central parts of South Bay of Bengal and extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 10th January 2021.

♦ Last week’s trough at 1.5 km above mean sea level from north Pakistan to south Gujarat coast across West Rajasthan and Saurashtra & Kutch at 1.5 km above mean sea level has become less marked on 7th January 2021.

♦Last week’s induced cyclonic circulation over southern parts of Haryana & neighbourhood extending upto 0.9 km above mean sea level has become less marked on 7th January 2021.

♦ Last week’s trough in low level easterlies at 0.9 km above mean sea level from the cyclonic circulation over central parts of south Arabian Sea and adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean to North Madhya Maharashtra has become less marked on 7th January 2021.

♦ A trough in low level easterlies ran from Karnataka coast to Maharashtra coast at 0.9 km above mean sea level on 7th January 2021; it ran from the cyclonic circulation over Southeast Arabian Sea to Gujarat region at 0.9 km above mean sea level on 8th and to northwest Madhya Pradesh across Eastcentral Arabian Sea and south Gujarat Region at 0.9 km above mean sea level on 9th;it ran from Southeast Arabian Sea to north Maharashtra across Eastcentral Arabian Sea at 0.9 km above mean sea level on 10th; it has become less marked on 11th January 2021.

♦ A Western Disturbance lay as a cyclonic circulation over western parts of Afghanistan & neighbourhood between 3.1 km & 7.6 km above mean sea level on 7th January 2021; it lay as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan & neighbourhood and extended upto 7.6 km above mean sea level on 8th; it lay over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir between 3.1 km & 5.8 km above mean sea level on 9th;the cyclonic circulation associated with the Western Disturbance persisted over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir and was seen between 3.1 km & 4.5 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long.72°E to the north of Lat. 32°N on 10th; it continued as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir between 3.1 km & 4.5 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 72°E to the north of Lat. 32°N on 11th;it lay as a cyclonic circulation over Jammu & Kashmir and neighbourhood between 3.6 km & 4.5 km above mean sea level with trough aloft with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 75°E to the north of Lat. 32°N on 12th;it has moved away east-northeastwards on 13th January 2021.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining central parts of South Bay of Bengal and extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 9th January 2021; it persisted over the same area and extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 10th; it lay over Southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast and extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 11th; it lay over Comorin area & neighbourhood and extended upto 4.5 km above mean sea level on 12th; it lay over Comorin & adjoining Maldives area and extended upto 4.5 km above mean sea level on 13th January 2021; it was seen as a trough of Low at mean sea level from Comorin-Maldive area to Lakshadweep area with an embedded cyclonic circulation extending upto 4.5 km above mean sea level over Comorin - Maldive area in the afternoon of 13th January 2021.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over east Bangladesh and neighbourhood and extended upto 2.1 km above mean sea level on 9th January 2021; it has become less marked on 10th January 2021.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over southwest Rajasthan & neighbourhood extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 10th January 2021; it has become less marked on 11th January 2021.

♦ A trough at 0.9 km above mean sea level ran roughly along Long. 88°E to the north of Lat. 26°N on 13th February 2021.
