Friday 20 November 2020 MORNING Time of Issue: 0745 hours IST ALL INDIA WEATHER SUMMARY AND FORECAST BULLETIN

Significant Weather Features

♦ A low pressure area over central parts of south Arabian Sea with associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mid- tropospheric level persists. It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a Depression over Southwest Arabian sea during next 36 hours. A trough runs from the cyclonic circulation associated with the low pressure area to Comorin area in lower level.Under its influence, scattered to widespread rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm & lightning is very likely over Kerala & Mahe and Lakshadweep on 20th and scattered rainfall activity is very likely over south Tamilnadu during next 24 hours and decrease significantly thereafter over the region due to west-northwestwards movement of the low pressure system.

♦ Northeast monsoon rainfall activity very likely to be subdued over southeast peninsular India including Tamilnadu during next 2-3 days.

♦ Under the influence of a fresh easterly wave, scattered to fairly widespread to widespread rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm & lightning and isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands on 21st & 22nd November, 2020.

♦ Minimum temperatures are very likely to fall gradually by 2-4°C over northwest India during next 3 days and over Central India by 2-4°C gradually after 24 hours & over East India by 2-3°C after 48 hours during subsequent 3 days.

Main Weather Observations

♦ Rain/Thundershowers observed (from 0830 hours IST to 1730 hours IST of yesterday): at a few places over Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and isolated places over East Uttar Pradesh and Lakshadweep.

Rainfall recorded (from 0830 hours IST to 1730 hours IST of yesterday (1 cm or more): Ambikapur, Aminidivi and Jamshedpur-1.

Thunderstorm (from 0830 hours IST of yesterday to 0530 hours IST of today): at isolated places over Chhattisgarh, Coastal Karnataka, Lakshadweep and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal.

Maximum Temperature Departures as on 19-11-2020: Maximum temperatures were appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at many places over Chhattisgarh; at a few places over Odisha and Jharkhand and at isolated places over West Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha and Telangana; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at a few places over Marathawada, Konkan & Goa, East Madhya Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Gangetic West Bengal and at isolated places over Coastal & North Interior Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. They were Markedly below normal (- 5.1°C and less) at a few places over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad and at isolated places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi; appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to - 5.0°C) at many places over Punjab and Rajasthan; at a few places over Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and at isolated places over Gujarat State; below normal (-1.6°C to - 3.0°C) at a few places over Assam & Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh and at isolated places over Lakshadweep and near normal over rest parts of the country.

Yesterday, the highest maximum temperature of 36.3°C was reported at Vengurla (Konkan & Goa).

Minimum Temperature Departures as on 19-11-2020: Minimum temperatures were appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at most places over Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Madhya Maharashtra; at many places over Marathawada; at a few places over Andaman

& Nicobar Islands and Assam & Meghalaya; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most places over Odisha, Konkan & Goa and Coastal &

North Interior Karnataka; at many places over East Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, East Rajasthan, Telangana, South Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam; at a few places over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and at isolated places over Kerala & Mahe and West Uttar Pradesh. They were below normal (-1.6°C to - 3.0°C) at most places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi; at many places over West Rajasthan and Saurashtra & Kutch; at a few places over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh and are near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the lowest minimum temperature of 6.6°C was reported at Churu ( West Rajasthan) over the plains of the country.

Meteorological Analysis (Based on 0530 hours IST)

♦ The low pressure area over central parts of south Arabian Sea with associated cyclonic circulation extending upto 5.8 km above mean sea level persists. It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a Depression over southwest Arabian sea during next 36 hours.

♦ The trough from the above cyclonic circulation associated with low pressure area to Comorin area extending upto 3.1 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The cyclonic circulation over west Madhya Pradesh extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The trough from Sikkim to southeast Madhya Pradesh at 0.9 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation over Jammu & Kashmir and neighbourhood at 3.1 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ A fresh Western Disturbance is very likely to affect Western Himalayan region from 22nd November, 2020.

Weather Forecast for next 5 days * upto 0830 hours IST of 25th November, 2020

♦ Meteorological sub-division wise detailed 5 days precipitation forecast is given in Table-1.

♦ Minimum temperatures are very likely to fall gradually by 2-4°C over northwest India during next 3 days and over Central India by 2-4°C gradually after 24 hours & over East India by 2-3°C after 48 hours during subsequent 3 days.

♦ Moderate fog in isolated pockets very likely over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during next 3-4 days.

Weather Outlook for subsequent 2 days from 25th November, 2020 to 27th November, 2020.

♦ Scattered to fairly widespread rain/thundershowers along with isolated heavy rainfall activity very likely over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and Kerala & Mahe. Isolated to scattered rainfall activity likely over rest of South peninsular India.

♦Under the influence of Western Disturbance, light/moderate isolated to scattered rain/snow over Western Himalayan region.

♦ Dry weather likely over the remaining parts of the country.

Weather Warning during next 5 days *

20 November (Day 1):Thunderstorm with lightning & hail very likely at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh and with lightning at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya, Kerala & Mahe and Lakshadweep.

Squally weather (wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph) very likely to prevail over Southeast and adjoining Eastcentral & Southwest Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep area and along and off Kerala coast. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas.

21 November (Day 2):Heavy rainfall very likely at isolated places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Thunderstorm with lightning & hail very likely at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya.

Strong winds (speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph) very likely over Southwest &

adjoining Southeast and Central Arabian Sea. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas.

22 November (Day 3):Heavy rainfall likely at isolated places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Strong winds (speed reaching 55 -65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph) likely over Southwest & adjoining Westcentral Arabian Sea and speed reaching 40 -50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph over Southeast Bay of Bengal. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas.

23 November (Day 4):Heavy rainfall likely at isolated places over Tamilnadu, Puducherry &

Karaikal.

Thunderstorm with lightning likely at isolated places over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal.

Strong winds (speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph) likely over Southwest Bay of Bengal along & off Tamilnadu coast. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas.

24 November (Day 5):Heavy rainfall likely at isolated places over Tamilnadu, Puducherry &

Karaikal.

SIGNIFICANT WEATHER FEATURES

 Movement of troughs in easterlies has caused fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/thunderstorms over Peninsular India, Andaman Nicobar islands and Lakshadweep area during the week along with isolated intense to very intense rainfall activity over some parts of Peninsular India.

 Movement of a Western Disturbance and its induced cyclonic circulation have caused scattered to fairly widespread rainfall/thunderstorms along with isolated intense rainfall activity over Western Himalayan Region and isolated to scattered rainfall/thunderstorm activity over adjoining plains of Northwest India during the week.

 Remnants of Western Disturbances have caused isolated to scattered rainfall/thunderstorm activity over parts of Northeast India during the week.

Heavy Rainfall:

 Heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls at isolated places had been occurred over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikkal on one day during the week.

 Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places had been occurred over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry &

Karaikkal on two days; over Rayalaseema and Kerala & Mahe on one day each during the week.

 Heavy rainfall at isolated places had been occurred over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam on five days; over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikkal and Jammu& Kashmir on two days each;

over Kerala & Mahe on one day during the week.

Temperature Scenario:

The lowest minimum temperature of 8.3 oC had been recorded at Churu (West Rajasthan) on 18th November 2020 over the plains of the country during the week.

LEGEND: A few days- 3 days, Many days- 4 to 5 days and Most days- 6 to 7 days during the week.

METEOROLOGICALANALYSIS

♦ Last week’s cyclonic circulation over Equatorial Indian Ocean off south Sri Lanka coast lay over Sri Lanka & neighbourhood and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 12th November 2020; it lay over Comorin area & neighbourhood and extended upto 0.9 km above mean sea level on 13th; it has become less marked on 14th November 2020.

♦ Last week’s trough from Southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast to Westcentral Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh coast ran from the cyclonic circulation over Sri Lanka & neighbourhood to Southwest Bay of Bengal off north Tamilnadu coast and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 12th November 2020; it lay as a trough of low at mean sea level over Southwest Bay of Bengal off Tamilnadu coast on 13th; it has become less marked on 14th November 2020.

♦Last week’s cyclonic circulation over southeast Uttar Pradesh & neighbourhood lay over southeast Bihar

& neighbourhood at 3.1 km above mean sea level on 12th November 2020; it has become less marked on 13th November 2020.

♦ A feeble Western Disturbance as a trough in mid-tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level ran roughly along Long. 55°E and to the north of Lat.30°N on 12th November 2020; it continued as a trough with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level, roughly along Long. 60°E to the north of Lat.30°N on 13th; it lay as a cyclonic circulation at 3.1 km above mean sea level over Afghanistan & neighbourhood with a trough aloft with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long.60°E to the north of Lat.28°N on 14th; it persisted as a cyclonic circulation at 3.1 km above mean sea level over Afghanistan & neighbourhood whereas the trough aloft ran roughly along Long.

65°E and to the north of Lat.22°N on 15th; it lay as a cyclonic circulation at 3.1 km above mean sea level over north Pakistan & neighbourhood with the trough aloft roughly along Long. 70°E and to the north of Lat.26°N on 16th; it has moved away northeastwards on 17th November 2020.

♦A trough in easterlies ran from South Andaman Sea to Eastcentral Bay of Bengal and extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 13th November 2020; it has become less marked on 14th November 2020.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over Punjab & neighbourhood at 3.1 km above mean sea level on 13th November 2020; it has become less marked on 14th November 2020.

♦ A trough in easterlies ran from Comorin area to Southwest & adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal off Tamilnadu -south AndhraPradesh coasts and extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 15th November 2020; it ran from Comorin area to north Coastal Tamilnadu and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 16th; it has moved westwards and merged with the trough in easterlies from the cyclonic circulation over Maldives area to Southeast Arabian Sea on 17th November 2020.

♦ An Induced cyclonic circulation lay over south Pakistan & neighbourhood and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 15th November 2020; it lay over northwest Rajasthan & neighbourhood and extended upto 2.1 km above mean sea level on 16th; it lay over northeast Rajasthan & neighbourhood at 1.5 km above mean sea level on 17th;it has become less marked on 18th November 2020.

♦ A trough in low level easterlies ran from Maldives area to Southeast Arabian sea off Kerala coast and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 16th November 2020; it ran from the cyclonic circulation over Maldives area to Southeast Arabian Sea and extended upto 0.9 km above mean sea level on 17th; it has become less marked on 18th November 2020.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over Maldives area & neighbourhood, extending upto 0.9 km above mean sea level on 17th October 2020; it lay over Southeast & adjoining Southwest Arabian Sea and extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 18th November 2020.

♦ A Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation lay over Afghanistan & neighbourhood at 3.1km above mean sea level on 17th November 2020; it lay over north Pakistan & neighbourhood at 3.1km above mean sea level on 18th November 2020.

♦ A trough ran from the cyclonic circulation over Southeast & adjoining Southwest Arabian Sea to Comorin area and extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 18th November 2020.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over southeast Rajasthan & neighbourhood, extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 18th November 2020.
