We tend to make comparisons before we choose something. We all want to feel sure that what we chose is a better deal than what we didn't choose. Certainly, sales people are clever enough to know this. In fact, sales tricks come in many forms. Here are more of those tricks (SMART!) you may have not noticed.
Shuffle - Many shops have a policy of regularly rearranging their items. By doing this, shops encourage people to explore the areas they don't usually visit in the stores and to buy things they didn't originally plan on buying.
Music - Music is a powerful force that can affect customers' shopping behavior. Many shops play slow background music to increase sales. Slow music makes shoppers move more slowly and stay in the store longer. The longer they stay, the more they are likely to buy.
Aisle - Shops place major items and brands in the middle of the aisle. This way they make customers walk the furthest to reach those items from any direction and look around more along the way. The idea is simple. The more they see, the more they buy.
Right - As most people are right-handed, the product that a store is trying to promote will be placed just to the right of popular items.
Time - Using signs like "Limited time only" or "Last-minute deals!," business people often create a sense of urgency to make people feel pressed for time. Shoppers do not want to miss a good deal, so they buy things without carefully thinking.

Here is another example of this kind of sales trick. A restaurant owner tried to come up with ideas to increase sales of the restaurant. He considered putting an advertisement in a local newspaper. He also thought about giving a new look to the restaurant. (A) , these ideas would cost him a lot of money. The owner finally decided to ask for advice from a restaurant consultant. Studying the menu prices, the consultant found out that the most expensive dish on
the menu would make the highest profit, but its sales remained very low. The consultant recommended the following solution: "Create another dish that is more expensive." The restaurant owner did as he was told, and (B) , his business became more successful than before.
What's the secret behind this? Generally, people are much more likely to order the second most expensive dish than the most expensive one. The second most expensive dish doesn't look too expensive when it is presented along with a more expensive one.

Are you a smart consumer? What do you think makes you a smart consumer? Using coupons? (A) Making a shopping list? Reading consumer reviews? (B) Or just waiting until the product you want to buy is on sale? (C) However, being a smart consumer is more than just using coupons and buying things on sale. [A] Three different subscription options are offered here. The first option would give you full access to their website for $59. The second option, costing $125, would give you the print subscription. And the last option would give you both the print and the Internet subscription for
$125, the same price as the second option. Now, which one would you choose? I'm certain that nobody would choose the second option. Who would choose the print-only option when the print-and-Internet option is offered for the same price?
[B] Do you think the students would still prefer the print-and-Internet option to the Internet-only option like the first group? , the students reacted differently. This time, 68 students chose the Internet-only option, and only 32 students took the combo option. Why?
It's because the dummy option was removed. The magazine sales team knew that .
[C] The students chose as follows:
1. Internet-only subscription for $59 - 16 students.
2. Print-only subscription for $125 - zero students 3. Print-and-Internet subscription for $125 - 84 students
Then Ariely asked another 100 students to choose their subscription option. , this time, he removed the print-only subscription and gave only two options - the Internet-only subscription and the print-and-Internet subscription.
[D] Once you see the last option, you may think, "Oh, the Internet subscription is free!" and go for it without much thinking. Yes, this option is exactly what the magazine sales department
intends to sell! If you chose the last option in the above ad, . Indeed, many people chose it over the first two options. Dan Ariely, an economist teaching
at MIT, tested this ad with his students. He presented this ad to 100 students at his university and asked them to choose an option.
