CHAPTER 4: PROFILE OF COMP ANIES

4.6 Conclusion and Comparisons with NSI 2012

The indings and results obtained in this survey indicated signiicant improvement in the number of respondents compared to 2012 survey. The total number of sample has increased from 5,293 (2012) to 5,333 (2015). As a result the total amount of feedback received in this survey had increased to 2,372 compared to 2,006 for the 2012 survey.

In the case of innovative companies, the indings show that number has increased slightly from 1,178 (2012) to 1,213 (2015). For the non-innovative companies, the number had reduced from 504 (2012) to 472 (2015). In this survey, the highest response for ownership of manufacturing and services sectors are private limited companies with 76.33% and 75.40% respectively, compared to the previous survey (2012) that returned 71% and 59% respectively.

In this survey, the highest number of innovative manufacturing companies (25.59%) are companies that were established from 2005 to 2009 [2012 survey: 2005 to 2008; 26.52%].

Meanwhile for the services sector the highest number (27.96%) of innovative companies were established from 2005 to 2009 [2012 survey: 2001-2004; 27.15%].

The study further found that 26.44% of manufacturing companies innovations consist of the manufacture of other food products meanwhile in 2012, about 24.7% of manufacturing companies innovations consist of the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products.

For the services sector, 13.72% innovates in the wholesale of machinery, equipment and supplies meanwhile in 2012, about 36.15% innovates in travel and tour.

Other main interesting indings in this study is that the amount spent for innovation activities in the manufacturing sector, for the range of RM50,000.00 and below, almost doubled from 21%

in 2012 to 40.5% in 2015. Meanwhile for the services sector, the amount spent for innovation activities for the range of RM250,000.00 and above has increased by 8% from 2% in 2012 to 10% in 2015.

Conclusively, the size of innovative companies surveyed showed that for manufacturing sector, there is an increased number of small companies covered in the survey from 111 (2012) to 366 (2015), while medium companies decreased from 147 (2012) to 69 (2015), and large companies decreased from 187 (2012) to 34 (2015). Similarly, the services sector equally demonstrated an increase in the number of companies covered in the survey from 339 (2012) to 695 (2015) for small companies, decreased number for medium companies from 273 (2012) to 28 (2015), and also a decreased number of large companies from 121 (2012) to 21 (2015).

The change was inluenced by the Malaysian Government’s new deinition for small, medium and large companies. This could also be due to small and medium companies being the largest in number in Malaysia (DOSM, 2014; SME Corp., 2013) as noted by several other studies and report indings.
