COURSE OUTLINE IN PLANNING2

I. Course Title : Fundamentals of Urban Design and Community Architecture

II. Course Description : Cultural expression in the design of the exterior environment in neighborhoods, communities, towns & cities

III. Course Credit : 3 units (3 Lecture hours per week) IV. Pre-requisite : Planning 1

V. Course General Objectives :

The student will be able to:

Cognitive:

1) acquire a sense of spatial order, scale, culture and history in handling urban design and community architecture problems.

2) determine the organization and behavior in the design of specific towns and cities.

3) acquire and evaluate useful planning techniques relevant to the rank of the architect as a design professional.

4) relate history and planning theories to ecology and sustainable development.

5) relate to current thoughts and practices with regards to plan formulation &

implementation.

6) translate the user’s needs with technology based solutions to functional and aesthetically appealing spaces.

7) compose and illustrate architectural concepts & principles from a given problem.

Psychomotor:

1) design and develop the built environment in the context of ecological balance, sustainable development and conservation of cultural and historical heritage.

2) use various presentation techniques appealing and easily interpreted in the professional environment.

3) display effective communication skills.

4) apply current architectural trends with the solutions and presentations.

Affective:

1) demonstrate awareness on the need for socio-cultural expression and communication in the design of specific place

in towns and cities.

2) recognize the importance of community involvement/participation and co-design techniques in urban/community architecture.

3) complete the requirements and display interest and acceptance on the challenges posted by a multi-tasking activity.

4) participate and cooperate effectively amongst the groups of people with diverse background.

5) recognize the importance in abiding the building laws and policies by applying them in his/her design.

6) show humility in accepting his/her mistakes in the expected output.

7) demonstrate willingness to improve in his/her work.
