Your theme this year: Rice Science and Innovation for Inclusive Growth, happily reflects your intention to heed President Duterte's call to all government officials to explore innovations and out-of-the-box approaches to sustainable and inclusive agricultural growth. Unfortunately, agriculture's contribution to the country's economy, despite its critical role in feeding our 100 million population, lags behind, with a decrease of 1.0% in the second quarter of 2016 from a 0.4% -growth achieved in the same period last year. True enough, the success of the institute was due to us – its men and women – who devoted much of our time and energy to uplifting the lives of the Filipino rice farmers through research and development initiatives.
