Theories and applications of English and Translation
Our English and Translation programme provides you with expertise in the main theories, concepts, and tools of translation and interpreting studies, linguistics and literature that are crucial to the education of those who will go on to contribute to the development of our society in a global setting.
What does the programme cover?
BSc ENGLISH AND TRANSLATION
Whether you’re new to the art of global communication or wish to build upon existing qualifications, Effat University offers undergraduate
programmes that focus on translation, linguistics and literature to bring language to life.
The E&T programme focuses on three streams: translation, linguistics and literature, and you’re free to choose which stream to follow. You’ll also be given the skills you need to teach English as a foreign language (TEFL).
You’ll learn how to excel in creative and critical thinking, global communication, personal integrity, and civic responsibility, all within a course that prioritises innovation for the benefit of higher education and community in the region and beyond.
What skills does the programme give you?
Upon successful completion of the programme, you’ll be able to:
Knowledge
• Define terms related to specific areas of specialisation and approaches to English/Arabic translation and interpreting, linguistics, and British/American literature
• Recall some aspects of language and culture
• List major theories and scholars in the specialised areas of study
• Recall the history and development of the English language
Cognitive Skills
• Discuss various issues related to literary, linguistic or translated texts
• Learn how to apply certain terms, and theoretical concepts to specific texts
• Examine texts or data in your specialised field and give a good critical analysis
• Write a well-researched essay in your field of specialisation
• Assess an argument using supporting theories and illustrative examples
• Critically evaluate your translation products, as well as those of others
• Creatively and efficiently resolve consecutive and simultaneous translation
• Propose new and creative approaches to old translation problems
Interpersonal Skills and Responsibility
• Demonstrate cultural awareness and understanding
• Respect work ethics and work collaboratively with your fellow students instructors, and internship supervisors and mentors
• Be accountable for your actions and accept the outcomes of your choices
Communication Skills
• Communicate effectively in both English and Arabic
• Express opinion succinctly and intelligently
• Cultivate awareness of and respect for other languages, cultures and traditions
• Demonstrate the ability to see different issues and ideas from multiple perspectives
Psychomotor Skills
• Pronounce speech sounds in a variety of languages
• Coordinate hand and brain activities in taking shorthand notes during simultaneous and consecutive translation
What do you need to apply?
• A High School Certificate or its equivalent from inside or outside the Kingdom, with a minimum score of 80%
• A minimum score of 520 on your TOEFL test, 5 on TWE, 6 on IELTS, or their equivalent
• A minimum score of 65% on your Ministry of Education exam (Qiyas-Qudurat) or its equivalent (SAT)
• To successfully pass your DTMS (2 parts)
• To successfully pass your interview with our admission committee
You’ll also need to give us these supporting documents:
Personal statement
A short written statement telling us why you’d like to study on our E&T Programme, and describing your distinctive experiences, characteristics, and background. Our Admission Committee will use your statement to measure your creativity, intelligence, self-awareness, determination and vision, so it should give a sense of your long-term goals and artistic ambitions.
Letter of recommendation
An official letter from a referee (your high school teacher) that confirms you’ll be able to successfully complete university work. The letter should be an original, on letterhead, and stamped and sealed by your teacher.

As a graduate of our English and Translation programme, you can look forward to taking up roles including:
• School teaching
• Professional translation and interpretation
• Employment in industries such as journalism, editing, copywriting, public relations, and advertising
• A career in business, government, software development, market data analysis, administration, sales, and marketing
• Other professions that require high levels of English language skills, research skills, and critical and analytical abilities
You’ll also be able to continue with post-graduate studies in linguistics, literature, translation and TEFL.
