VIGNETTES, FIGURES, AND EXERCISES
PREFACE
The order of the chapters suggests that we get to know the confident curious inner selves (in Chapters 1 and 2) before approaching the parts of the personality that separate. But as soon as you can catch your breath, go back to the beginning of the book and learn about the spiritual instincts that are as innate as your instincts for pleasure and aggression.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
INTRODUCTION
But when he called upon the God of Israel, "The Lord's fire fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stone, the earth, and licked up the water in the trench" (18:38). God understood Elijah's fear and commanded him to stand on the mountain so that the Lord's presence could pass by.
PSYCHOLOGICAL PIONEERS
Dulci
I had an appointment and planned to drop my kids off at the babysitter's, but I kept hearing a voice in my head saying, "Don't do this." I called my mom and asked her to watch my kids while I kept my appointment. The next day I was on my way to the babysitter's trailer and the voice got louder, "You can't do this!" I called my mom again and told her to watch my kids, and I just took them home . her house and dropped them off. ''.
CORPORATE SELF
Betty
Because of its central position, it could be considered the heart of the company - ''the point where the Earth grounded the heavens and the heavens raised the Earth. When an HR professional makes the connection between seemingly conflicting aspects of personality, integration brings moments of guidance from a transcendent, all-knowing CEO.
DEVELOPMENT OF HIGHER SELVES

3''Other-driven parts'' have gained a reputation in psychiatric literature as personality disorders. The title ''Other-powered'' is used to describe the Self's journey towards independence and beyond. If problems arise, they may stem from concerns about the nature of existence—the demands for freedom, the fear of isolation, the search for meaning, the use of death to define life (Yalom, 1980).
POSTCONVENTIONAL INTEGRATION AND TRANSCENDENCE
Because all facets of the personality are wrapped in a compassionate embrace, the Self becomes more boundless and real. Only 1% of the population rises above the need to be rational and inclusive to begin to integrate opposing forces and see underlying processes.
RECOGNITION OF HIGHER SELVES
Amiee
But there are twelve jars of honey in my cupboard and they have been calling me for hours. I could not hear them properly before, for the Rabbit would talk, but if nobody says anything but those twelve pots, I think, Piglet, I shall know whence they are calling.

EMPOWERING THE WILL
Odette
Was it a one time event or did you have to make decisions/act over and over again. Do you regret more the things you did or the things you didn't try.
Layla
Are they influenced by family, friends, culture, rebellion, greed, lust or need for attention or are your desires a way of expressing and stretching a part of yourself. Involves your current goals and desires to fulfill biological needs for food, rest, novelty, security, or sex.
SYNTHESIZING THE SELF
Rita
The thousand-petalled lotus in the Crown Chakra mandala (Chapter 1) is the traditional yogi symbol for the ultimate achievement of connecting the physical body with the transcendent Spirit. Forms arise that imply fragmentation of the ego when it is not fully connected to the Self.
RECOGNIZING AND REMEMBERING SPIRIT
Jaleigh/Mountain Spirit
Example 2: Tell yourself in the morning when you wake up (Moody & Carrol, 1997): ''I notice my breathing is slow and even. In times past, life was lived as an art as shown in the story of the kosher butcher (source unknown).

It didn't take much detective work to discover that Jenny had a dark part (Eeyore) inside that kept flashing warnings: “The time is coming. When Jenny's grim protector (Vignette 6) tried to prepare her for her mother's death with constant reminders that "the time is coming" and "it won't be long." She also told her that "she wouldn't" be good for anything'' and that was it.
NAMING PARTS TO RETURN TO THE TRUE SELF
Identifying names for parts and self 4.19 Making the whole greater than the sum of the parts 4.23. This chapter begins in the spirit of Abbott and Costello to help identify the insiders and outsiders of the mind: the inside directors who control and criticize; distractors that avoid harsh messages; and emotional entities full of energy and impulses.
PERSONAE—ADAPTABLE PERSONALITIES
DISTRACTERS—FIXED PERSONALITIES
Louise
Although Melanie's new house has many rooms, this does not indicate the presence of a large number of subpersonalities, but rather the ability to have space for different people in her life and feel comfortable with herself. They sound like the truth (to the eye of the beholder) and are difficult to stop once their argument begins.
Melanie
Complaining, blaming voices that focus on the faults of others offer strange comfort and are easily mastered. Although Alex's focus on others may derail his treatment, his verbal skills keep the therapists engaged and him in command of the sessions.
Alex
The cards have been really effective in cutting through his vocabulary and helping him gain (as he put it) a kinesthetic sense of his inner terrain. But Alex began to rediscover his true (zoned) self, able to focus on goals and remain calm in the face of frustration.
DIRECTORS—HIDDEN PERSONALITIES
You will know that you are at the mercy of an inner director, and the writing will take away some of its power. Instead of having an inner critic that says, “I don't know what I'm doing,” a judgmental part might express, “They don't know what they're doing!”
EMOTIONAL ENTITIES—INSTINCTUAL PERSONALITIES
IDENTIFYING INNER IMAGES

Desirable'', with her beautiful face and make-up, seemed to go further than the judge and snapped: 'You are so disgusting - kill yourself.' Worse still was "The Terrorist," a creepy, hollow-eyed character who threatened not to say his name and (perhaps) encourage avoidance. Ms. Ohh,” who wore glasses to put things into perspective, said, “Wow. this problem) doesn't really matter compared to the bigger picture." Finally, "The Presence" comforted: "I'm always watching, I'm always there to comfort your crying heart."
IDENTIFYING NAMES FOR PARTS AND SELVES
Odette
Rita
Being a "bear with little brain", he does not get involved in knowledge and knows how to see into the essence of things. Few people today know the main players in such epic tales as the Iliad and the Odyssey, but they were ideal for a scholar experiencing a midlife crisis of Homeric proportions.
James
One of the best ways to bring the Calm Center to the fore is by exaggerating controlling, demanding parts. Do any of the characters remind you of parts that require perfection, absolute control or non-stop work?
MAKING THE WHOLE GREATER THAN THE SUM OF THE PARTS
In the early eighteenth century, many communities began to flourish in the harsh Eastern European landscape, each with a ''miracle worker'' at its center. Like a campfire suddenly extinguished by a downpour, these communities disappeared as quickly as they came in the horror of the Holocaust.
MIND AS METAPHOR
MATERIAL MIND AND DIALOGUE
Tony
Will you never get all this work done?' Figure 5.1 'The community of the self' shows the central self. The Self should speak of the individual in the third person using his or her name: “You don't think Tony is doing good enough.
Rita
In the following vignette, after calming a critical protector, inner being turns to an angry distractor. Rabbit: It actually feels stronger to say, ''I know you're under a lot of pressure.'' All the reassurance in the world wasn't going to calm that woman down.

I'm here to make you think you're a bad person so you don't let your guard down. Me: Do you think I'm asking you to give up your power or trying to destroy you (Q-goal).
DIALOGUE IN A CHILD’S MIND
- Jeff
- Teen
- Kenny

- Jesse
Jordan's "Real Me" asked her critic one of the essential questions for clarifying purpose—(n) "Is there another part of the personality you're trying to block out?" Parts of the personality are often polarized into opposite positions. Critical Defender: There is a true maverick within who is very different and very energetic.
REVIEW AND PRACTICE EXERCISES
Kate
Comforter (N—feelings caused by critic): You make Camille feel————. Comforter: You make Camille feel unattractive and hopeless. Comforter: You tell her she's too lazy to exercise, but you don't want her to spend money on herself.
THERAPY THROUGH DIALOGUE
Janette
Jeanette may have had a choice - "Does your 'Spiritual Self' want to tell the critic that she is adding more pressure (N—feelings) or ask if she will ever be good enough (d)?" Gradually the counselor-coach simply asks : "What could your True Self point out or ask this part of the personality to now?". Counselors become listeners and continue to encourage storytelling or inquiry - ``What might your spiritual self point out now?'' recognizable debates.
COACHING AIDS
Celia
Her therapist suggested that the Fixer be placed in a remote area of the room so that her true Self could speak to Mrs. Now the Fixer makes me run a load every day, even though there is hardly anything to wash.
Kate
COUNSELING EMOTIONAL ENTITIES AND ABREACTION
In the upper left corner, the children drew an image of the worst part of the hurricane. Then they drew the next image that came to mind in the upper right corner of the paper and repeated the butterfly hug.
COMPARISON TO RELATED APPROACHES
Kate
Both Berne and the Watkinses encountered the concept of ego states in the work of Paul Federn. Therapy focused on keeping the adult's ego state from contamination by recognizing when the child's or parent's ego state interfered (Erskine, 1997).
PHILOSOPHICAL CONTEXT AND CONTRIBUTIONS
PSYCHONEUROLOGICAL EVIDENCE
The core ego is fairly constant in the individual's presentation to the world (Ego State Therapy, 1970). Internal self: mental representations of the self that are good/bad, superior/inferior, or obedient/nothing.
EVOLUTION OF REASON
ELEVATION OF THE SPIRIT
By uniting with the absolute unity of the cosmos or the Way (Tao), formless, 'non-dual'. Hypnotherapy: A hypnotic state is induced through suggestion, confirmation, and prediction, during which clients may experience some of the following: (a) increasingly narrow attentional focus, (b) calmness and silence, (c) age regression, (d ) increased recall, (e) receptivity to acceptable ideas, (f) visualization, (g) identification of conflicting ego states, (h) pain suppression, and so on. In the 1970s, John and Helen Watkins discovered ego states while using hypnotherapy.
GLOSSARY
Personal Unconscious: Area of the mind that includes anything that is not currently conscious but may be (Jung). Shadow: Aspects of the personality (positive and negative) that have been relegated to the unconscious because conscious life will not allow their expression.
