Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

It is intended that the award of the Doctor of Philosophy signifies the completion of a course of supervised study and research which:

demonstrates the capability for substantial independent research or creative activity and which has made an original and distinct contribution to knowledge and/or professional practice in the relevant field; and

comprises a research component which is no less than two-thirds of the total course requirement; and requires the submission of a thesis, which may include a product and/or artefact, in a format according to requirements specified by the Graduate Research School Board.

As a rule, the results are expected to be of a standard required for publication in a refereed journal.

The examination process at UTS is conducted along lines which are common in Australian universities.

For full details of UTS policies please refer to: http://www.gradschool.uts.edu.au/policies-rules/index.html Key features are:

The primary input into judging theses is normally from written reports from examiners only;

Examiners prepare their reports independently, without consultation, but may request an opportunity to consult with other Examiners. This may be facilitated when two or more examiners request an

opportunity to consult before finalising their (individual) reports;

Oral examinations are not common. They may be used at the specific request of a Faculty. In such cases an oral examination is conducted by designated members of the Panel of Examiners and the Dean, Graduate Research School, or representative;

Examiners complete a recommendation form selecting one of five options (pass with minor

amendments; revise and re-submit; etc.). Examiners are also expected to write a general assessment of the thesis and to suggest amendments or corrections. This report is commonly no less than two to three typed pages in length and may be structured according to a set of Notes for Examiners;

When received, the set of Examiners' Reports is sent to the Responsible Academic Officer in the Faculty, the Principal Supervisor and the student (with Examiners' names withheld where requested).

The Faculty considers the general reports; recommendations; and the student's and supervisors'

responses to the Examiners' Reports in developing a recommendation to the Graduate Research School Board (e.g. admit to the degree; revise and re-submit; do not admit; etc);

The Graduate Research School Board considers the recommendation in light of the documentation and supports the recommendation or otherwise. There are established procedures for dealing with conflicting examiners’ reports which can be accessed at:

http://www.gradschool.uts.edu.au/policies-rules/hdr-exam-guidelines.html

It is open to the Graduate Research School Board to appoint an additional Examiner, or a Moderator;

the Graduate Research School arranges payment of the honorarium (for external examiners only);

the Graduate Research School informs Examiners of the outcome of the examination prior to the relevant graduation ceremony.
