Will of Chief Rabbi Hertz.

The late Chief Rabbi Dr. J. H.

Hertz has left £16,138 in his will.

His bequests include £100 to his Ll;ranJchild, £50 to Jews: Colleg~, £50 to the Institute of Jewish Studies at the Hebr ·w University, and an an- nuity for the next five years to each of the charitable, communal and tech- nical institutions to which he used to subscribe, with the exception of Jews' ('ollege to which not less than the usual amou11t was to be given.

The income from his publications is m the first place to be used for re- publishing them, but for five years his trustPes must distribute equal1y among his children any money which had accumulated. This is, with the exception of the Soncino Pentateuch, the income from which is to go to hls rlanghters. The residue of his pr<?- iJerty is to be divided amongst his

hildren.

Dr. Hertz left any papers relating o the office of the Chief Rabbi to his necessor.

The trustees and the executors are his son Mr. Samuel H~rtz, his sol}- 'n-law Rabbi Dr. S. Schonfield, Mr.

'I'lw death of Nahum Edelstein, ho passed away after a long illn ss, trageously borne, at his home :n t London on August 16th, at a mparatively early age, came as a deep shock not only to the East Lon- don community but also to Kingwil- linmstown Jewry, of which he was a I adil}g member since his arrival there

in 1902. He moved to East London in 1936, taking a keen interest in com- munal affairs, particularly in Zionist artivities.

His bequests include £100 to the Hebrew University aIJd £50 to the East London Talmud Torah.

He is survived by his wife, son and three daughters.

Honour of Prof. Rabbi Abrahams.

On Wednesday 8eptember 4th, the Wardens and Co~mittee of the Cape Town Hebrew Congregation were "At Home" to their members. The occa~

sion was a reception held in honour ot Profe sor I. Abrahams, Chief Rabb~ of the congregation, on his return from his recent visit to London as one of the delegates to the International Co~­

ferenee of Christians and Jews, held in

Oxford early iQ. August. . Mr. Max Rabie, who was in the chair called upon Mr. A. Friedland0r to e~tend greetings to Rabbi Abra- hams on' behalf of the Committee and Uongrega tion.

Mr. Friedlander said that he was mindful of the great honour which had fallen to his lot in extending greetings to Rabbi Abrahams. He had to apo1ogise for the absenc~ of the President of the Congregation, Dr.

B rnstein, who was indispo .d, and also for the absence of Mr. A. Liber- man and 1ir. Woolf Harris, two for- mer Presidents of the CongrPgation, who were unfortuuately likewise not in the best of health, and 'Mr. Isaac Frank who was out of town. Rabbi Ahrahanu; had arrived in Cape Town on J\ ugust 16th, 19a7. HP had now returned from England on August 16th 1946. In 1937 he had been to us an unknown quantity, but to-day we had learnt to love, admire and re- ver<' him for hi conscientious appli- ration and selfle s devotion to every phase of congregational and com- munal endeavour.

RABBI ABRAHAMS ON JEWISH POSITION IN ENGLAND. Rabbi Abrahams, in replying, thanked Mr. Friedlander for the sen- timents which he had expressed and said .that he was grateful to the con- gregation for these and other tokens of friendship which he had at all times ret'eived There was about this gatherin.g something special-a warmth of welcome and a feeling of unity. appreciated this and he hoped that he and the congregation would have many more opportunities of meeting to- gether not only in Shul, but on social occasions of this nature.

England bad experienced and contin'.led to pass through, a bard and trying time ard was comparable to-day to a person who had suffered a severe illness- the patient was still convalescing and although the crisis was over, he :Qever- theless remained lethargic and tired.

The Jewish community had not only suffered with the rest of the popula- tion, but had been subjected to a ''lrl-itz'' of its own. Many synagogues had been demolished by bombs and congregations had been dispersed by evacuation or through the enlistment of the younger people in ~he ior~es.

There were Jewish children who, for a period of six years, had ::.ecehred very little Jewish education and bad grown up without a proper Je.vis.t1 up- bringing.

There was a dearth of Jew: ~h minis- ters in England. Jews' Colle~'3 was to-day the only seminary worthy of the name left in the whole of Europe.

It would have to provide ministers not only for England but for the Em- pire; but unfortunately it suffered from lack of funds and students. The spiritual outlook was not altogether a happy one. Religiously, the commu- nity was divided. Th~re were liberals,

Reform Jews (who were not quite liberals) whilst the orthodox com- munitv 'was itself divided into various group~. In London there was the rnited Synagogue, the Federation cf 'ynagogues and an ultra Orthod?x section. There were also strong d1f- fcren<'P:s of opinion on Zionist issues.

The Anglo-Jewish Association d~d not see e~·e to eye with the Board of De- puties, on which there was at the moment a Zionist majority. Most of the Anglo-Jewish Association's sup- porters were resident in London ; the provinces w re inclined to f ~vour the policy of the Board of Deput1eis. .

Whilst he personally, continued Rabbi Abrahams, did not come across any instanee of anti- emitism, it w~uld be a. mistak to deny its exist- ern e in Great Britain or to under- t>stirnate it· potentialities. Mosley and hii-; henchment were still aliY and, whilst not as active as before the wa1·, they l'ontinuf'd to conduct whispering ean;paigns. The Rabbi dealt at leugth with the deliberations of th, onference at which had been present representa- tiYes of fiftMn different countries.

The di ·cussions had been grouped under three headings-Freedom, Jus- tice and Responsibility. Delegates tried to devise schemes for the train- ing of a uew generation of responsib~e

citizens who would be aware of their lutv to humanity. The Conference was' unique: it was tlie first of its kind eT'Cl' to b arranged, and it bad the blessing of some of the highest re- 1 igious and political authorities in the world. Leading theologians and good- will worker: had participated. Every suggestion put forward was fully iIJ- Yestigated, and nothing was dealt with lightly. Although delegates did not always see eye to ey with one another, they found that they were on common ground when the Bible and its ideology formed the basis of their discussions. One could not measure imponderables; consequently, goodwill was not measurable. Yet it remained oIJ.e of the greate t realities of human life and the duty to foster the spirit of 'goodwill was the paramount ta k of our generation. With confidence one might look forward to tangible results in regard to the amelioration of the Jewish position in Europe as a sequel to the Oxford Conference.

In conclusion, said Rabbi Abrahams, his most lasting impression of his visit to EJJgland was that the Anglo- J ewish community had found common ground and a basic unity in its con- certed effort to promote Jewish educa- tion and inculcate Jewish ideals in our youth. Increasing attention was being paid to Jewish Youth Clubs, Literary Societies and the establishment of Synagogue Centres. AQglo-Jewry felt that it had been given the hegemony of surviving European Jewry. " In truth we are all survivors," concluded the Rabbi, "and if we are to justify our survival, we must save the rem- nant of Judaism in our midst."

Mr. L. Gradner, in moving a vote of thanks to Professor Abrahams, as also to Mr. B. Rome who had delightfully rendered some Jewish songs, and to Miss J. Pienaar for her charmiI}g re- citation of that beautiful poem "Be,.
