A POSTAL RECORD
Jewish New Year Messages Jewish New Year greetings pro- duced record telegraph business for the Johannesburg General Post Office.
Whereas the average daily number of messages dealt with by the head post office is about 22,000, on Friday last it was 42,816 and on Saturday, 26.079.
For the two days the messages totalled 68,895, compared with
ap-proximately 66,000
forthe two cor- responding days last year.
The greatest increase, however, has been in phonograms. On Friday the total was 1,453 and on Saturday 999.
The previous record
wason December 24 last, when 919 phonograms were sent in Johannesburg.
Isador Epstein's Pupils
Mr. Isador Epstein and his teachers have been scoring outstanding successes lately.
Exhibitions in the University examinations, which entitle them to compete in the over- seas scholarship next year, have been awarded to Olda Mehr and Leo Quayle, while a bursary was gained by Louii.-i Nicholaeff. Twelve out of fifteen solo sec- tions in the Afrikaans Eisteddfod were won by the Epstein Piano School which gained for them four gold medals. Another pupil, Miss Esther Seigal, won the Artist's com- petition. -

On the 18th ult., at the Hebrew Hall, a successful and pleasant social was given in honour of Mrs. Bernard Segal on the oc- casion of her return from Eretz Israel. Mrs.
Segal is the founder of the Benoni Women's Zionist League.
Mrs. Segal, in giving an inspired account of her impressions of her recent visit to Eret;~ Israel, spoke in a vivid manner, and gave a delightfully intimate picture of the life there.
Mrs. L. Lazarus sang some songs and Miss Shames played the piano.

Jewish War Memorial Service The annual service by the South African Jewish ex-Service League in commemoration of South African Jews who fell in the Great War, will be held at the Jewish Guild, Johan- nesburg, on Sunday, the 6th inst., at 2.30 p.m.
The chaplain, Rev. A. T. Shrock,
willofficiate, and the parade will be in charge and under the command
ofCapt.

Lipshitz, and G. Gordon, adjudged Mr. H. M.
Goldberg the winner, Mr. N. Phillips second ancl Mr. M. Levin third.
