Every motorist in South Africa knows what a great motor oil it is;- but have you thought about the support your Patent Castrol purchases are giving to the Union's best customer. engines don't ask for anything better.

Due to their resilience and beautiful color mix, as well as the smoothness and sensitivity to the treatment of their surfaces, Insulite Hardboard dance floors have already received wide recognition, from Cape Town to Oslo. NEW MINERS' PHTHISIS BUREAU

JOHANNESBURG

Doubtful or more serious cases are referred to the central hospital of the Witwatersrand Native Workers Association, where they are examined by the visiting staff of the Phthisis Bureau. To the right of the main hall there is access through teak double-swing glass panel doors to a large waiting room (60 ft. x 22-!- ft.) containing 30 teak benches arranged in rows parallel to the width of the hall. The majority of the benches face the east, but on the other hand, a few face the west to accommodate those miners whose turn is near to be called into the X-ray department.

In the northwest corner of the waiting room, it will be noted on the drawing, a staircase leads down to a convenience block in the basement. This department is of particular interest, as special architectural treatment was required due to the nature of the work carried out in it. 1 the lift is mainly for the use of the X-ray and photographic staff: and for the transport of X-ray plates.

In the south-west corner of the X-ray department, a small photographic section is shielded by a partition, also armored against X-rays by lead lining. A further feature of the X-ray department is that, with the exception of the X-ray tubes, all machinery and equipment is installed in the basement. It will be seen that the south-west corner of the ground floor is occupied by the non-European department, which includes toilet block, offi<:\: changing room, X-ray room and examination booth.

The stair hall is placed in the center of the plan on the same axis as the entrance doors in the main hall. During the session of the Bureau, the shutters are closed to darken the room so that the viewing of the X-ray plates is made as easy as possible. The reduction of noise, which interferes with the effectiveness of medical investigation, was one of the primary concerns of the Department.

It is sufficient comment on the design of the building to quote the Chairman of the Bureau, who states that the building functioned admirably in all respects.

New Mortuary At The Johannesburg

STRUCTURE to NEW PURPOSES

Access for the staff is from the Hospital grounds on the east side of the building. Each group is a separate cooling unit equipped with thermometers and thermostatic control. The cells each accommodate three bodies on stainless steel trays, which can be pulled out on a special stand that can be adjusted to the level of the tray. In the remaining part of the old building which has been adapted for mortuary purposes, there is a private doctor's toilet and toilet, the latter finished to door height with cream-glazed tiles.

Other fixtures include surgeon basins, stainless steel instrument cabinets, sinks and running water accessories for each of the autopsies and dissecting tc:bles for swelling purposes. The enclosed yard at the extreme east of the extension contains a brick incinerator for burning all hospital and yard rooms. The basement of the old building has been used for the installation of refrigeration machines.

As a final word on the structural features of the building, it should be noted that the windows to the general European, Jewish and Native sections are glazed with obscured glass and flyscreens. The windows of the autopsy and student room, the student toilets, inspection room and laboratory are also fitted with flyscreens. The construction of this new mortuary has not only provided the hospital with up-to-date accommodation in this respect, but has enabled the authorities to remove the old mortuary, further north of the site, to make way for extensions to the nurses' home.

Another example of the Post-M orten~ department, taken from the top of the students) galleY)'·. It is likely that certain applications of aerial surveying are known to the majority of engineers in South and East Africa, as few are pros. This enormous step in progress has been made possible by the purchase of new equipment, some of which has been built to the specifications of The Aircraft Operating Company of Africa (Pty.), Ltd., and some of which represents the latest in performance. of the best minds in Europe focused on problems of photogrammetry.

This new equipment, which has actually been acquired and is available, covers every phase of the work, from initial aerial photography to assembly.

A STEREO-COMPARATOR, being a special instrumental device designed to extract the coordinates of any selected point on a pair of aerial photographs in stereoscopic ratio. The operator sits at the autograph, which is connected to the drawing table on the left. Two cameras in a drafting machine In addition to aero~triangulation, the instrument accurately corresponds and reproduces the optical and primarily intended and operates most economically spatial conditions of the air measuring camera on its two scales from 1/500 to 1/5000.

It is therefore of successive positions in space when two photo~ are of great interest to engineers. An optical magnification of 8 times and a possible error is likely to be of interest as it is the extreme 3 times reduction in drawing scale that provides areas for which the Aircraft Operating Company a wide range of possible final scales in relation to Africa (Pty .), Ltd., has already carried out aerial surveys at the scale of initial photography.

Smoky Chimneys

Reconstruction of the fireplace led to a com~. complete healing in the case of the fourth floor apartment. In the case of the upper floor flats, no smoke nuisance occurred after reconstruction, except to a slight extent during gale force in a certain direction, although previously smoking always occurred to some extent and in gales it was impossible to light a fire to keep the fire going. The length of the "throat" was determined by fixing the width at four inches and making the area of the cross-section equal to the area of the crotch.

The latter, however, must not be of a smaller section than the effective area of the flue, i.e. the area of the largest circle or ellipse that can be described in the section of the flue. In the few cases of chimneys brought to the attention of the Building Research Station, it was impossible to meet all of Rumford's requirements, except by incurring excessive expense. Fungi feed on the wood and cause what is popularly known as rotting.

Ernest Bateman, senior chemist of the Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wisconsin, estimates that chromium salts are about the same as sodium fluoride. New chemicals have been discovered and compositions of various salts have been produced, which provide complete protection of wood without some of the disadvantages of oil. In addition, zinc chloride leaches easily from wood and therefore does not have much permanent value.

Compared to metal salts, this has the advantage that it is very difficult to leach out of wood and does not corrode metals. Wolman was one of the first to recognize the value of sodium fluorosodium as an effective wood preservative. Modern preservatives meet these requirements, and with one known preservative, the only effect upon application is to stiffen the wood fibers, which is often a useful property.

This dependence on toxic values has the important advantage that the surface of the wood can be painted, varnished or painted and polished without reducing the strength of the protective agent. The most important modern preservatives for general use are non-volatile, which ensures that their effectiveness does not deteriorate as the wood ages. In each case, the name of the successful tenderer and, where practicable, the contract price shall be given.
