BUCKINGHAM NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2017

It is with huge sadness that we feel the loss of two of our gentlemen members who passed away recently.

STAN PULFORD : a true gentleman who enjoyed many years of happy and successful bowls, and who gave endless time, commitment and consideration to bowls matters. As his son Simon said at Stan’s funeral he was “…a bonza bloke.” We give Lorraine our love and support as she returns to Thursday pennant and Stan may well be watching every bowl she puts down because she’s using HIS bowls. Div 2 are sure to do well now as they have a magic wand on them !

ERIC HANLON : also a lovely gentleman who loved sport all his life – cricket, football and then bowls.

2017/218 Pennant Season : We are settling in now after having had 7 games on Wednesdays, 5 on Thursdays and 7 on Saturdays.

The BTS website will give you detailed information about games played, results, ladders and skip ladders (which obviously means rinks not just the skip).

Currently the ladders are:

Midweek ; div 1- 2nd (Kevin Raby’s rink is the 2nd top rink for the division);

div 2 - 2nd (John Garrett’s rink is the top rink); div 4 - 2nd (Barry French’s rink is the top rink)

Thursday ; div 1 - 3rd; div 2 8th (Jenny Gordon’s rink is the 4th top rink); div 3 - 10th; div 5 - 4th (Jo Reynolds rink is 3rd)

Saturday : Premier - 5th; div 1 - 3rd; div 3 - 4th; div 5 - 4th (Lonners’ rink is the top rink); div 6 - 3rd

*Skips (or any player as skips may be too humble !) are very welcome to email Janet or Lindy Howell so outstanding play/players in any game can be given an ‘Honourable Mention’ in the next newsletter.

NOTE: It would be great to have successful and/or happy teams stay together, but there are

inevitably changes every week as players are unavailable. Unavailability has a domino effect on all the teams below. Please remember to be tolerant in order to ‘help’ the selectors in their weekly attempts to match players’ availability with players’ personalities with BTS rules as well as talent. Selection is complex.

BIG congratulations to our talented junior member ADAM TAYLOR who was in the winning BTS men’s B grade 4s last weekend.

ALSO congratulations to JENNY GORDON who excelled in the Aust Masters’ Games recently winning 2 silver medals in target shooting events.

New members: Welcome to new members Mary Moore (Pat Rainbow’s sister) and Ann Goggins to our club. They have willingly committed to playing in Thursday’s pennant and we wish them lots of enjoyment in learning new bowling skills and social interaction.

Thank you: to our President Ike who calls the ‘Bingo shots’ every Monday night. The club is greatly (and thankfully) supported by the Bingo funds.

AND to Dickie Emmett for his days of painting inside our clubhouse 

AND to our trusty and committed Monday crew who maintain our grounds and take away rubbish – Charlie Fysh, John Atkinson, Stan Petryk, Vic Coombe, Graeme Smith, Peter Ibbott, John Jeffery. Our garden and greens surrounds always look lovely so thank you for doing that so faithfully. Many of our players do not know about how this happens. Also thanks to Frank Eaton for his work on the synthetic green with the help of the line markers Gerry McElroy, Rob Tyson and Barry Nash.

Barefoot Bowls: One of our barefoot players is also a golfer and has passed on a comment about how welcoming we are to social players and that his club could learn from us. That sounds like great feedback  Show Day mixed fours: Ten teams competed in the ‘Arthur Stagg’ Show Day game. It was enjoyed by all and the excited winners were Alan Farr, Patricia Smith, Peter Smith and Pat Rainbow who won both their games by the most shots (6+13). Second were Romun Z, Dickie Emmett, Sue Emmett, and Paul Evans (5+13) VERY CLOSE! Third were Glenice Pearson, Kevin Raby, Adrian French and John Millhouse (4+9) and fourth were Dot Millhouse, Pat Z, Cathie Robson and June Guy (4+2).

Melbourne Cup Lunch : was a fun day attended by 50 members and friends. We were treated to a delicious main course cooked by Romun, Dickie, Charlie and Iain, followed by dessert. Thank you to Verlie and Pat R for organising the sweeps and also the helpers on the door and in the kitchen – a few quiet folk who just step up when something’s on. Lucky punters won a number os $1, $2 and $5 sweeps. Joy Bratt looked so stylish and won the best Cup outfit, and Pat Rainbow’s daughter Joanne won the best hat.

Bucks Christmas Dinner is on Friday 8th December at the Club. It is catered for and will be a 2 course meal for $28 per head. Please put your names on the list on the whiteboard inside the front door.

Does anyone know of a business who might donate for our Christmas raffle? Free advertising for them.

Please remember to bring your ESKI item OR sell your 10 raffle tickets, (even if to yourself!) and return your raffle butts/money to George.

New bowls activity:

Friday afternoon ‘Chicken Run’ – 9 end pairs games between 3.30 – 6.00 pm. Choose grass or synthetic.

Win a chicken for all sorts of things, not just talent! Opportunity to play early and stay for a meal, or eat early and then play. Put your name down on the list inside the door. More details in the general notice area.

Report from Max Roberts re the work on the clubhouse and solar panels.

The Club has decided to install a 25Kw system comprising 90 Solar Panels. Rick Gittus from Affordable Solar was awarded the contract to install the system at a cost of about $43,000

The Federal Government has provided a rebate of $16,000, members have donated appro. $4,000. Thank you very much. As a business, we receive a Tax credit of around $2,400 from the GST. The club has secured an ‘Interest free’ loan sponsored by the Tasmanian Government, Aurora Energy and the Westpac Bank. The re-payment period is over 60 months, thanks to Janet for negotiating this with the Finance Co.

A shed has been installed at the rear of the dining room by Dennis Silver and Robbie Stringer to house the Inverter (and the batteries when we get to stage 2).

A building engineer inspected the roof structure to ensure it would carry the weight of the panel. His instructions required the club to strengthen the trusses in the roof and also to weld an additional 50x50x3 RHS to the existing 100x50x3 RHS lintel above the floor to ceiling windows in the bar area. Thank you to many club members for their time and effort:

Dennis Silver, Robbie Stringer, John Atkinson, Gerry McElroy, Bob Humes, Graeme Roddam, Peter Gangell, Don Holland, Brett Rutherford, George Kovacs, Barry Nash, Ryan Mc Coull, Frank Guy, Grant Chamberlain, James Howell, Dickie Emmett.

I also acknowledge the valuable support from our sponsor McKay Timber.

Frank Hill Roofing Contractors donated the screws as their sponsorship for this year.

The engineer has inspected the completed works and issued a certificate.

A few jobs remain to be done.

 Grant will paint the eaves linings when time and circumstances permit.

 Electricians will re-install the fittings on the eaves lining.

 James will patch the plaster sheeting inside the club and Dickie will repaint that plaster.

 Photos and Plaques will be re-installed.

The panels will be installed mid-December and commissioned prior to Christmas.

We are grateful to our sponsors; please support them as they support us:

Thanks to Scott Bacon MHA and staff for printing this newsletter.

Any information to be included in the newsletter can be sent to Lindy Howell at [email protected]

Please tell me in writing rather than ‘on the hop’. Don’t let any possible ‘thank yous’ to

members go by without telling me. 
