The Club’s crest & bulletin name reflect ‘Odin’ (anglo-saxon ‘Woden’), the ancient Nordic God of Wisdom.

Odin had two ravens called Hugin and Munin (Thought and Memory) who flew forth every day and returned at night to tell him what they had seen, so contributing to his wisdom.

SOME INTERESTING ‘FACTS’ ABOUT BICYCLES

As we begin to ‘gear’ up for our annual Rotary Rides Canberra event in April, here are some interesting (albeit unverified) ‘facts’ about bicycles...

• The first human powered land vehicle was constructed by Giovanni Fontana in 1418.

• The term “bicycle” first entered into popular usage in France in the 1860s.

• The prototype of the mountain bike was not developed until 1977.

• One of the most iconic images from “The Goodies” TV series is their three-seater bike, the

‘trandem’. Three different style trandems were used over the Goodies’ nine series.

• The fastest speed ever recorded on a bicycle was

attained by American Olympic cyclist John Howard, when he reached 152.2 mph.

• Lance Armstrong’s heart is one-third larger than “normal.”(Hmm, why is that???)

• Half of all the parts of a typical bicycle are in the chain.

• There are roughly one billion bicycles in the world (about twice as many as motor vehicles).

• Bicycles use 2% as much energy as cars per passenger-kilometre, and cost less than 3% as much to purchase.

Rotary Rides Canberra will be held this year on Sunday April 21, and will finish at the Mount Stromlo Observatory where participants can explore the nationally significant Canberra landmark and gain an appreciation of the sites history including the impact of the fires and how the area has recovered from those tragic events

Brindabella Rotaract have a new meeting venue:

From Tuesday 5 February, they will meet every 2nd Tuesday at the Burns Club, 8 Kett St Kambah. 6.45 for 7.00 pm.

LAST WEEK...

We were pleased to welcome to the meeting Alison Garnsey and Natalia Beghin. Alison is the daughter of the late Stuart Garnsey (1913-1971), who was Principal of the now-closed Woden Valley High School and a founding member of our Rotary Club in 1969. Since1972, our Club has given an award in his name. The Stuart Garnsey Award has been presented annually to students at the Woden Valley High School, then later at the Alfred Deakin High School, followed by Phillip College and now the Canberra College.

Currently it is presented to a year 12 student for service to the College community and academic achievement beyond expectations. Natalia Beghin was presented with the Stuart Garnsey award on 23 November 2012.

Natalia achieved a university entrace score of 98.4, and is soon to start an Arts degree at the ANU majoring in International Relations,

Political Science, Chinese Language, and Islamic studies. Throughout her time at Canberra College, she was involved with a variety of community service projects, namely volunteering with an Indian dance school to promote multiculturalism, and working towards RUOK Day )a suicide precention initiative) at the school. Natalia was also involved with two oversead aid projects, in Malaysian Borneo, where she worked mainly on reaforestation projects; and in East Timor, as a United Nations Youth Delegate volunteering in schools and meeting with governement officials to discuss aid and development in the area.

We congratulate Natalia on her achievements to date and look forward to hearing news of her future endeavours.

Our speaker was one of our members, Gary Scott, who spoke on “Sustainability Practices in the Home: What can I do? What should I do? Why should I do it?

Following some background to the issue, Gary drew attention in particular to:

• appliances – purchase items with high energy or water star ratings;

• building – pay attention to insulation , orientation etc;

• lighting – energy efficient lighting and solar panels;

• greenhouse gases – use ‘environmentally friendly’ products and services;

• water – use solar hot water systems; and

• transport – walk, cycle, efficient cars etc

This poses the question: Why do we not do these things? With possible answers:

• no positive feed back (environmental);

• no commitment or burn-out (social);

• cost issues (economic);

• additional workload (educational);

• no reward structure (administration);

• little understanding (staff development); and

• NIMBY (selfish)

A fascinating talk from which club members took many things to think about for our future lives and for the good of the world community.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT....

Parking: Gary Scott drew the attention of members to the need for volunteers on 8 and 24 February and 10 March at Thoroughbred Park as listed at page 2 in the Raven for 30 January. Please contact Gary to volunteer. He confirmed that the show society had been advised of the Club’s non-availability for parking at this year’s Canberra Show on 22-24 February; he awaits feedback if any from the show society.

Bike rides assistance: Jeff Ibbotson reports that Pedal Power are looking for volunteers to assist them on Sunday 3 March and Saturday 16 March. Our Club will be paid for this assistance at the rate of $15 per person per hour. Please contact Jeff if you can help.

Kiwirrkurra Dialysis Centre: John Widdup is looking for 6 volunteers for the next working visit from 26 March to 16 April. The work includes cleaning and painting. He advises that the latest quote for a single air-fare from Canberra to Alice Springs is $298. Please contact John or Shukry if you can assist.

Death of Bob Harvie’s brother: We regret to record the passing, after a long illness, of Bob Harvie’s brother Clive. Like Bob, Clive Harvie grew up in Canberra. In his working life he became well known as a primary school teacher and a respected headmaster. In his latter years he develop an interest in local history and was a regular researcher at the National Archives of Australia. He published a fascinating book on the history of the Manuka Swimming Pool, a place that was important to him in his youth. Clive was active in the community and was a member of Lions Australia. Club members extend to fellow-Rotarian Bob and the Harvie family their sincere sympathy on this sad occasion.
