Membership and Extension

“There can be no doubt that the members are the lifeblood of Ro- tary - without them the organisation would not exist.

To maintain our place in the world of Service Organisations, we must ensure that we continue to value our members, to help them maintain enthusiasm and interest in our programs, and to seek out and introduce new members.

Every Club should have and active Membership Committee with responsibility not only for recruiting and inducting new members, but also for ensuring the satisfaction and therefore the retention of current members .

Membership is every Rotarian’s responsibility. We should all seek to replace ourselves and to make our Clubs a nice place to visit,

join and stay”.

The Club’s crest & bulletin name reflect ‘Odin’ (Anglo-Saxon ‘Woden’), the ancient Nordic God of Wisdom.

Odin had two ravens called Hugin and Munin (Thought and Memory) who flew forth every day and returned at night to tell him what they had seen, so contributing to his wisdom.

We wish all of our members who are not well a speedy recovery and return to our weekly meetings.

Dinner Roster:

If you are unable to attend a meeting and you are on the roster for a duty please arrange a replacement and let the Raven editors know.

Sadly, the start of the meeting was delayed as one of the Rotarians was involved in an accident just near the Irish Club. As a result several Rotarians went to the site of the accident to ensure that all was OK. No Rotarians were injured but the Rotarian’s car suffered extensive damage.

In the confusion there was no Sergeant to open the meeting. President Lyn started the meeting by welcoming Assistant District Governor

Melissa Tooke. As it was a Club Assembly several important issues were then discussed.

 The Club still needs to finalise the financial aspects of the 2014 Rotary Bike ride with Pedal Power. Neither Jeff Ibbotson nor John Widdup was available so President Lyn asked if Rotarian Gary Scott could assist her in finalising this issue.

 President Lyn passionately argued the value to Woden Rotarians attending the District Conference (14—16 November 2014) in Canberra at the National Convention Centre. The cost is $120 to attend both days plus $125 for the two dinners on Friday and Saturday nights. Registration for new members (ie those who

joined after 1 November is free). Lyn asked that all Rotarians give it their highest priority.

 Again the issue of membership was a “hot” issue. District has decided to reduce the reporting requirements for all clubs in terms of reporting membership “stats” to District once per month. As such it was agreed that “percentages” for attendance will no longer be recorded each week in the Raven. Make-ups also will not be recorded.

 However, special attention is to be given to “service” hours as Rotary (at International and local levels) is using this information to inform the general community just how many “free hours”

Rotarians give to their local community. Basically service hours can be claimed for all activities, meetings, etc except attendance hours at the regular (weekly) Rotary Meeting. Members were encouraged to fill out the service hour’s sheet at every Rotary Meeting.

 There was extensive discussion about ways to increase membership. Des Henderson-Kelly spoke at length about a

“Membership Recruitment Plan” he has given to several past presidents with no real follow-up. Des briefly introduced several ideas in his Plan. President Lyn highlighted just how important these ideas were and she asked Des to resubmit his “plan”.

George Pratt is this years Membership Director and President Lyn will follow up any good suggestions with him. Several Rotarians supported dedicating one Rotary meeting to Membership each month. The idea was to invite members of our local community to hear about the service activities of the Club as a means of

attracting them to join the Club. It was suggested that the evening be advertised as encouraging people to join Rotarians in Service or Project activities rather than as a means to attract people to join Rotary.

 Members were asked to nominate social activities that they would like to be involved in such as movie night, ten-pin bowling, meal and theatre night, special dinner meeting ( eg at CIT Hospitality), polio fund raising night ( eg 24th October—World Polio Day), etc.

The Program Director agreed to look into these suggestions.

 Throughout the evening Rotarians raised several additional items that could be discussed. Overall it was a very successful meeting—

well done President Lyn with help from ADG Melissa.

 President Lyn thank ed all and closed the meeting in the words of the IR President “Light up Rotary”.
