1 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
In regards the following inquiry of the knowledge in the present study, this
chapter is going to explain about the background of study, statement of problem, purpose of study, significance of study, scope and limitation of study and definition
of key terms. This stage is important to introduce the foundation of the present study. Each section will be explained as below.
1.1 Background of Study
English is an international language which has various of vocabularies required to make a sentence in paragraph. This means people need to have their own
techniques to store varies of vocabularies. Looking at how important vocabularies in the international language, vocabularies should be given to the learners in their very beginning of a language study. This idea may help learners in learning the language
correctly. Therefore, teaching proper using appropriate methods will benefit teachers and learners in learning English as international language.
To master the vocabularies, the students need some strategies to get more vocabularies. Here the researcher will explain the strategies to master the vocabularies. According to Rowenhorst (2006) there are some simple ways to
mastery vocabulary indirectly for children by using reading, listening and speaking. Basically reading vocabulary, speaking vocabulary, writing vocabulary and listening

and it has a big role in vocabulary development. As a result, the more children do the
reading, speaking and listening skills, the more they will get vocabularies.
A related study that was conducted by Witri Kurniawati (2012) about strategies for vocabulary enrichment employed by teacher at the fifth year of SDN I Jatirejo. It wasfound that there are some strategies that are usually used by teacher at
SDN I Jatirejo to enrich the student’s vocabulary, such as: definition, self-defining context, realia, reading the words, writing the words, and games.
Meanwhile, there is another research on the strategy done by students in learning vocabulary. It was done by Bei Zhang (2011) about the vocabulary learning strategies used by Chinese students. The result shows that there are several kinds of
learning strategies used by Chinese students to master vocabulary, they are listening and reading, learning words in sentence, using bilingual dictionary, reading English
books in spare time, studying the spelling.
From the all theories above about the strategies in mastery vocabulary, the
researcher has the experiment in the learning and mastering vocabulary in different strategies, and this strategies frequently used by santri in Darussalam Gontor boarding school. Santri is the students who study in the boarding school. As a
boarding school, Darussalam Gontor boarding school has already developed a unique model of English teaching. It provides both formal and informal language

very up to date language theories and language learning theories as bases for conducting teaching and learning activities. Informally, Darussalam Gontor boarding
school creates a good environment where the learners are enforced to use English as their everyday communication. Wherever and whenever they go to or stay in the
boarding school they have to use English. In daily activity, in the morning santri will be given some vocabulary which has been prepared previously by their seniors. The
senior will provide vocabulary by using direct method.
By this phenomenon, the researcher is interested to know the strategies that are used by santri Darussalam Gontor boarding school in mastery vocabulary.
1.2 Statement of Problem
Based on the research background of the study above, the research problem of
this study is:
What are the strategies used by santris to promote the vocabulary quantity?
1.3 Purpose of the study
Related to the research problems, the purposes of the study this research is:
To know the strategies used by santris to promote the vocabulary mastery.

The theoretical significance of this research is expected to be able to increasing the knowledge about the strategies that used by santri in Darussalam
Gontor boarding school to promote the vocabulary mastery. By knowing how to promote English vocabulary by santri in Darussalam Gontor boarding school, is
expected to enrich our knowledge in English vocabulary learning strategies. Furthermore, for the next researcher, this research is expected to have some
improvement and give more knowledge to make the next better research.
1.5 Scope and limitation of the study
In this research the writer is interested in investigating the learning vocabulary strategies by santri. Because of his limited time, source, knowledge and experience
before in the boarding school before, the scope of this study focuses on the learning strategies used by santri Darussalam Gontor boarding school in mastering
vocabulary.
1.6 Definition of the Key Terms
1. Vocabulary is a word described as a sound or a combination of sounds, or its representation in writing or printing that symbolizes and communicates a meaning
