CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

This chapter discusses the background of the study, the statement of the problems, the

purposes of the study, the significance of the study, the scope and limitation, and the definition

of the key terms.

1.1 Background of the Study

Language is a tool for our communication. It means that humans need it to interact or

communicate with others in their daily life. Without language, people will feel difficult to

understand and to communicate with each other ‘Language is, of course, the central object of

study in the linguistic sciences, but the term covers several rather different concepts which need

to be carefully distinguished’ (Trask, 1999: 138). So, it helps us create our social words and

labels the meanings we ascribe to people, things and events.

In Indonesia, when people speak usually they use more than one language. They are

Indonesian, as national language, and regional languages like Javanese, Sundanese, Maduranese,

etc. Also English as International Language. So Indonesian people can be called as Bilingual and

Multilingual society. According to Trask (1999: 30), ‘Bilingual or multilingual is the ability

to speak two languages and there is good reason to believe that bilingualism or multilingualism

has been the norm for most human beings at least for the last few millennia’.

In bilingual and multilingual society, there are two kinds of code: code switching and

(12)

and to make their communication more understandable, more simple, etc. Wardhaugh (1986:1)

states, ‘When two or more people communicate with each other in speech, we can call the

system of communication that they employ a code’. When they mix of their sentences between

one language to another language in the conversation, it is called code mixing. According to

Wardhaugh (1986: 103), ‘Code mixing occurs when conversant use both languages together to

extent that they change from one language to the other in the course of a single utterance’. In

conclusion, it is clear that code mixing is a mixture of word, phrase, and clauses of several

languages. It means that code mixing occurs when a speaker uses a certain language in his

communication: however, he inserts some pieces of another language.

The main function of language is to communicate people and another. It means that in

communication, people always use the language. So, language and communication are related.

Another function of language is to get relationship with another. According to Trudgill (2000:1),

‘Language is not simply a means of communicating information about the weather or any

spoken word, such as talking face-to-face, on a telephone, on a dialogue, etc. It can be through

visual aid or broadcasting media such as radio and television.

Television as a tool of visual communication has grown fast in Indonesia today. It is one

of the tools of mass communication in electronic media. Television becomes a need for people

because watching television is often done by people to refresh and relax their mind. Besides, by

watching television people can get many informations that they need. The information include
