1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study

Reading materials play an important role to the English language teaching (ELT). Therefore, reading skill is needed to achieve the ability to understand English Text. Anderson in Chen (2005:1) emphasizes the mastery of reading skill could help learners have success not only in English learning but also in other content class where reading was required. Materials of reading become substantial in learning English in the class. As reading materials play an important role in

English learning, it should be developed based on students’ need and the content

should represent the real life problem will be faced by the students later.

Students in vocational school especially in Akomodasi Perhotelan (hospitality major ) are really need to be taught appropriate materials based on their needs about hospitality itself. They also have to be able to use English either oral or spoken because in their workplace they will face many English terms and many foreigners. Thus, teacher needs to find out the solution related to the teaching learning materials. The design of English learning also depends on the

learners’ needs.

(15)

procedure of making bed, procedure of handling the occupied room, how to process room reservation, etc. This is because, students in Akomodasi Perhotelan major are insisted to know English and communicate with English in order that they are easy to get a job in the workplace later. In addition, when they have their vocational competency practice test later, it is better for them to use English. While, there is still no reading materials completely serve the content about the hospitality especially steps in doing some works in hotel. So, as the case above, it

is really needed to develop the reading materials based on the student’s need and

the materials that represent the real life problem possibly they will face in their workplace later.

There were two texts from the students’ book analyzed to prove the

irrelevant content for hospitality students, namely “Preparation of the Perfect Cup

(16)

3

the texts actually do not relate to the content of vocabulary that can support the students in mastering English for their major, there is also no scenario problem which can be learned by the students from the texts. So, for the reasons above, the need of developing reading materials for hospitality students based on real life problem is really needed. It is done in order that, the motivation of students in reading can be improved because the texts are interesting and suitable with their needs that will be useful in their workplace later.

The score of the students was also collected to know how the students’

score is. Their Minimal Completeness Criterion (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum) is 80 but there is a gap between the fact and expectation. Many students could not pass the KKM.

In accordance with the law of National Education System article 3 and 15 about the goal of National Education said that vocational school is a high school preparing students competencies especially to work in a certain field. Since vocational school students are prepared to be ready in the workplace later, so it is really needed to develop the relevant reading materials and also contain the real life problem so that the students can learn from the problem and have the knowledge how to solve the problem in the workplace later. Therefore Problem Based learning approach is suitable to be used in developing the reading materials

for hospitality students’ of SMK N 1 Pantai Cermin. Because Problem Base

(17)

4

basic knowledge. In PBL the problem comes first, and an essential element of PBL is that content is introduced in the context of complex problems that imitate real life (Boud and Feletti as cited in Tan 2003)

2) to investigate the steps of developing English reading materials for hospitality students of SMK Negeri 1 Pantai Cermin

D. The Scope of Study

(18)

5

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

A. Conclusions

After analyzing the data, the conclusions were drawn as the following. 1. The existing reading materials in the book used by the hospitality students of

SMK N 1 Pantai Cermin do not discuss about hospitality. The genre of the texts are procedure, but they are not relevant with their major. The new reading materials in this reaseach are directed to the students’ competence as a hospitality students, they are : the procedure of making bed, the procedure of handling check in guest, the procedure of handling D&D room and the procedure of taking order.

2. The new English reading materials are developed through PBL approach and

Need Analysis which based on students’ need agree with the syllabus. The

reading materials needed, are directed to the topics related to the Standard Operational procedure in hospitality field.

B. Suggestions

In relation to the conclusions, the suggestions are presented as the following.

1. It is suggested that the institution should supervise the teachers in using the

materials and make the rule for the teacher to teach the students’ based on their

(20)

61

61

2. It is suggested to the other researchers to conduct further studies on developing reading materials in other genres needed by the students.

3. It is suggested that the English teacher should be more selective in using textbook which is suitable with the students major and even the teacher

should be able to design their own teaching materials to meet the students’
