1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of Study
“Novel is a story in prose long enough to fill one or more volumes, about
either imaginary or historical people” (AS Hornby; 1974: 575). This statement
usually tells people that the novel is about fictional and unfictional story.
The novel is not merely use for entertain someone, but it can provide
understanding, messages and conveys some of values of human life namely
ethics, spirit, collection, and culture values. In addition, the novel can give the
motivation, satisfaction, self-improvement and building a better human being. The novel is one of literary work which describes the events occurred in
the world, a model of life idealized, imaginary which are described in intrinsic
elements namaely theme, plot, setting, character and point of view.
Therefore, I choose the novel written by Agatha Christie in which the topic is
Postern of Fate. The novel tells about the mystery of past murdered which is interesting
in discussing, it because the story need the capability of thinking everyone to know the
mystery of the past murdered and also the story is related to real life. In this paper will
analyze the intrinsic elements

Actually, there are so many aspects which can be seen in the novel. Those
are: ethics, spirit, collection, psychology, education, cultural, social, theme, plot,
setting, character and point of view. But, the writer wants to limits his study and

In writing this paper the writer uses a method of research i.e library

2. SUMMARY OF THE NOVEL “POSTERN OF FATE”
Tommy and Tuppence were a married couple who were tired of living in a
big city which were always busy and unsafe as well the environment which did
not beautiful and healthy. Therefore they decided to move to a country which was
safe and peaceful. Such place was called Holloquway in England. They bought a
house and lived there. Actually they had daughter but she did not live with them
because she was married.
In their new house, they like spending the time by reading many kinds of
books especially reading the old books. They felt that the old story was still
interesting. One day while reading one of the old books, she unaccidentally
touched the bell for calling her servant, named Albert, actually she did not mean
to call her servant. Because of the bell sound, Albert come Albert came and ask
Tuppence what can be helped. Tuppence, told Albert to get a strange book for her,
she had never seen it before. Apparently the book was titled Black Arrow which
was written by Stevenson. The book is a relic of people who once inhabited the
house. Then Tuppence opened and read the book, she was intrigued because there
are words that are underlined with red ink on certain words. Tuppence deliver it to
her husband, Tommy. However, her husband thinks it is not unusual when one
read the book and it need not be regarded as a mystery or something important.
Tuppence, not simply accept the opinion of Tommy. Then, she showed the book
to Tommy. Both of them read the book and find a word that reads “Mary Jordan
was unnaturally death, He's one of us”. After seeing the book, Tommy still think
it was not something ordinary, but Tuppence has a high curiosity about it. Without
book. She went to the grave with her dog, Hannibal. Hannibal is a type of dog that
is very sensitive sense of smell against her employer. So when Tuppence out of
the house, Hannibal immediately followed him from behind. Tuppence, visiting
graves in the countryside, maybe she'll find a headstone that written name of Mary
Jordan, like the one in the book Black Arrow. Meanwhile, Tommy look for
Tuppence at home, he knew that his wife was not at home, maybe she seek the
truth of the words that she has founded in booke yesterday, and Tommy follow
Tuppence to the grave, he found her there. Tommy was angry, he said that no
name Mary-jordan Jordan or other written on the headstone. Tuppence first
inquiry failed. She forgot to find out Who is Mary Jordan for a while, because her
husband not alow her to do that.
In that new house many things that are not used, but not all that ugly junk,
there's still a nice even look unique, one of them is a brass lamp. For that
Tuppence decide to take him to the bazaar thrift. Indeed, many people who liked
that old brass lamps. Tuppence too busy looking for used goods which she likes,
Tommy did not accompany him in the junk bazaar. Tommy would prefer to walk
with Hanibal. They walked to a church, Hannibal who enjoy this freedom and
sniffing the grass and plants that decorate the edge of the street. Hannibal felt so
free, so it makes Tommy must be extra strong to take care of Hannibal. Hannibal
could not be detained again he entered the gates of the church, then Hannibal
show Tommy something. Tommy was surprised because he saw several graves,
the tombstone was no longer legible. Maybe it is for thousands of years ago.
Tommy noticed the gravestone one by one, but there is a strange feeling in her
When Tuppence is engrossed in reading the book, Beatrice her new
neighbors came to the house. Beatrice wanted to tell Tuppence about Mary
Jordan. As far as she knows Mary Jordan has ever lived in a house inhabited by
Tommy and Tuppence today. According to the story of Beatrice, Mary Jordan
died from an accident. But Tupence is not as easy to believe what the Beatrice
said. Beside Betrice there is also a new neighbor named, Mrs. Griffin. Mrs.
Griffin told that it was a lot of people who inhabit the house before Tuppence and
her husband, then she also confirmed that Mary Jordan also never stay there.
Maybe a lot of information she got about Mary Jordan. Following from Beatrice
and Mrs Griffin he also obtained information from Gwenda. Gwenda is a minister
in charge of sales of household appliances section and glassware. Tuppence
Gwenda told about Mary Jordan is known from the story of her grandmother.
Mary Jordan of a girl who has golden hair and beautiful. He has worked in the
navy. The mystery of his death is still confusing. But according to her story she is
food poisoning or Digits foxglove leaves poisonous and deadly type of plant.
There was someone who wanted to help pick vegetables in the garden, and take it
inside and give it to the chef. Yes spinach, lettuce and something like that. Mayny
people did not really know the difference. On examination it is said that it
happened because the spinach was grown near the foxglove. To better know the
information is more reliable, Tuppence meet with Mr. Isaac Bodlicot. He is very
well known in the village. He was known for her age who are not young anymore.
The people feel that someone who has age ninety can not do anything. Not
credible that he can make home improvements or renovations. It also makes
Bodlicot tell some new stories. Whereas, the house is currently inhabited by
Tuppence formerly known as KK (Kay-kay) derived from the Japanese language,
as well as former shows a rocking horse (True Love). He does not know a lot of
stories about Mary Jordan. He just tells that Mary Jordan died of food poisoning
and just it
When he returned to the house Tommy was surprised because Tuppence
bring the used rocking horse was taken to the house. Tommy thought his wife too
much to investigate the death of Mary Jordan. Starting from asking people who
are already very old at all, according to Tommy it was less efficient, because it
may be due to aging of their stories so rambling or old people had forgotten the
real story, which then adds a story that is not true. Tommy is also investigating,
but not the same as that she done. Tommy is more focus on the things an efficient
and reliable investigation .Such as meet Mr. Robinson, he gets more accurate
information. Which states that Mary Jordan is a spy. But he was not a German
spy. He's not an enemy spy. Mary Jordan is part of Mr. Robinson. At one point
they decided to do the investigation together. They met Colonel Pikeaway who
also knows a lot about events that occurred in the past, perhaps Colonel Pikeaway
know about the story of Mary Jordan's death. However, kololonel Pikeaway does
not know much about the death of Mary Jordan. He just tells that Mary Jordan
was not a spy. she was a good person who worked on the force of the Sea.
Strange things begin to happen when Tommy and Tupence investigating.
Namely Sir Isaac Bodlicot were shot dead by an unknown stranger Various
mysteries encountered by Tommy and Tuppence took them to a list that almost
unnatural, porcelain Oxford and Cambridge Chair , Grin-lo-hen, KK, Stomach
Mathilde, Cain and Abel, Truelove "and a population census data in the past. All
the things that help Tommy and Tuppence in solving the mystery of who they
meet. In the end in mind that the antiquity of the village where they live there is a
movement that resembles the movement of fascism, and it is probably still going
on until today. All these clues lead them to a woman named Miss Mullins (Crispin
called him by name "Dodo"). Miss Mullins in the end proved to be the grandson
of a physician toxic chemicals maker in wartime past. Ms. Mullins is also the man
who had killed Mr. Isaac and try to shoot Tuppence (although the bullet only
grazed his shoulder ).
Tommy and Tuppence eventually solved the mystery of "the death of
Mary Jordan," and catch the killer of Sir Isaac. The story also ends with a gala
3. THE INTRINSICS ELEMENTS OF LITERATURE
3.1 Theme
According to Stanton and Kenny in the book Shape of Fiction p. 111”
Theme is meaning that is implied in a story, however, there are many
meanings that are implied and offered by a story of a novel. So in this case, the
readers of a novel have to choose what the meaning is and what the additional
meanings are, in order to decide the main theme.
According to Hartoko in the book Theory Pengkajian Fiksin1998 p. 146:
In order to decide the main theme of a novel should have a clear definition
of theme itself. Theme is a general basic idea that supports a literature, and it is
implied in the text as the semantic structure and connects with similarities and
differences. Theme is filtered from motif found in literary work itself, which
decide the presence of events, conflicts, and certain situation. Theme becomes a
basic development of whole story, so it must represent whole part of the story of a
novel. Theme has wide and abstract generalization.
3.2 Plot
Plot is an important element of fiction or literary work; even most of the
readers consider it as the most important element among another element of a
fiction.
According to Stanton in his book Shape of Fiction p. 113:
Connected plot is the story consists of events order, but each event is only
with causality, one event is caused or causes the others.
Plot is events shown in a story which is not simple, because the author
arranges them according to causality.
Events and conflics usually have close relation. They can cause each other; even
conflict truthfully is event. There are certain events that can cause conflict. On the
other hands, another event can happen as the result of conflict happened.
According to Stanton in the book Shape of Fiction p. 127:
Climax is when conflict had reached the level of the highest intensity, and
it cannot be avoided. It means that climax must happen because it is the meeting
point between two and more situations which are contrary and it decides how the
problem will be solved.
The plot of a story contains of time’s order; either it is given explicitly and
implicitly. Therefore, there are earlier events, next event and the ending in a story.
However, the plot in a fiction seldom serves event’s order chronologically and
harmoniously, but it can be started and ended by whatever events. So that, the
earlier step must not be at the beginning story or text, but it can be whatever the
author wants.
According to Burhan Nurgiantoro in his book “Teori Pengkajian Fiksi” 1998 p.
152-158:
In literary work, there are several kinds of plot based on different criteria:
3.2.1 Kinds of Plot Based on the Criterion of Time’s Order
On the kind criterion of times order plot is devided in three kinds. First is
progressive plot. Progressive plot is if the event is chronologically that means the
solution. Second is flash back plot. Flashback plot is the event is not
chronologically, the story start form the earlier but maybe also from middle or in
last step. Third is mixed between progressive plot and flashback plot.
3.2.2 Kinds of Plot Based on the Criterion of Number
Beside plot has the criterion of times order plot has the criterion of number that
means the number of plot in story, perhaps novel has one plot, it is a single plot
but perhaps it has more than one plot as well and it is called sub plot. Fiction
which has single plot always just develops only by telling a main character who is
a protagonist, generally the story only follow the life of the character problem and
conflicts that he go. This plot is always s used in this work, but it is are only told
if they related to the main character. The other side, the sub-develops- a story by
telling more one plot, its structure contains main plot, several additional plot
(sub-plot) based on the order of importance and the role of character in the story.
3.2.3 Kinds of Plot Based on the Criterion of Content
According to Burhan Nurgiantoro in the book Teori Pengkajian Fiksi 1998 p.
152-158:
Friedman makes these plot into three i.e: plot fortune, plot of character,
and plot of thought
The plot of fortune connects with the story telling one the luck and the
fortune of main character in the novel. Friedman makes this plot into six kinds
such as action plot, platonic plot, tragic plot, punitive plot, and admiration plot.
The plot of character tends to the importance of character being the focus
the events. This plot is differentiated into maturing plot, reforming plot, testing
plot and generating plot.
The plot of thought telling something becomes thinking martial,
willingness feeling obsession and etc that become the problem life and human
lives.
3.3 Character
Another intrinsic element is the character. According to Jones, the
character is the description of clear image about someone who appeared in a story.
According to Abrams, the character is people who appeared in a narrative drama,
and it is interpreted by the readers as the person who has moral quality and
tendency such as being expressed in what they did. Characters occupy the
strategic position as the carrier and teller of messages, moral, or something to the
readers intentionally.
The characters in the novel differentiated into several kinds based on the
point of view. Based on the difference of viewpoint, a character can be
categorized into several at once, for example as the main character-protagonist
and main character-antagonist.
3.3.1 Main Character and Peripheral Characters
By reading a novel, the reader usually faces several characters that appear
in the story. But each character has different role. Based on the role and level of
importance there are essential characters being appeared continuously, so it seems
to dominate the story, which is called the main character (central character). The
appears in most of the story, either as a subject or object. In certain novel, the
main character always appears in almost each event and can be found in each page
of novel.
On the other hand, there are characters that appear once or some times in
the story, and maybe relatively in short portion, which is called peripheral
characters. Peripheral character is the character that is supported by the main
character in the main character in a novel, but this character held an important role
to the story of a novel.
3.3.2 Protagonist and Antagonist
Based on the characters appearance, the character can be differentiated
into protagonist and antagonist.
Protagonist is the character that is admired by the readers, popularly he/she
is called as hero because he/she always does the ideal robe and follows the rules
and values in society. The readers often identify themselves with this character,
give sympathy and emphasis, and involve themselves in this character
emotionally.
On the other hand, antagonist is the opposite character of protagonist,
directly or indirectly, either physically or psychologically. This character usually
causes conflict for protagonist, although the other things, such as disaster,
accident, environment, and society, social rules, moral values, authority, and etc
cause conflict.
3.4 Setting
When the readers read a fiction, truthfully, they are facing with a world,
and the problems. But, those things are less complete because the characters need
living space, place and time like human’s life in real world. In other words, fiction
as a world not only needs characters, story, and plots, but also needs setting.
Setting usually directs to the definition of place, connection of time,
environment, where the events happen in a story. Setting gives the basic of story
correctly and clearly. This thing is important to give realistic impression to the
readers, creates a certain situation at a glance it is really happens. So that, the
readers feel easier to operate their imagination and participate to criticize the story
generally.
The element of the setting can be differentiated into three principal
elements: setting of place, setting of time, and setting of society. Although each of
these elements offers different problems and can be discussed separately, but
actually they are related and influence to each other.
3.4.1 Setting of Place
Setting of place directs to the location of the events happened, the use of
this place with special name should observer the geographical condition of the
place. Each of places must have their own characteristic, which make different
with another place. Its description between place accurately and realistic is not
suitable will make the reader important to give impression.
3.4.2 Setting of Time
Setting time is related to the matter of when the events with history,
knowledge and the reader perception and then used to try in sphere story. The
or accuracy time can profitable to give the impression to the reader and make the
story is really happen in this time.
3.4.3 Setting of Society
Setting in social is related to the social life in that place, the tradition of
social life embraces many problems in complex scope and to lift up the setting in
social in the movie the writer should know about the area such as the habits life,
tradition, culture, religion and etc.
3.5 Point of View
Point of view is one of the elements in a novel, which is classified as literary
device by Stanton. However, it doesn’t mean that the role of viewpoint will
influence the story. The form of viewpoint will influence the reader’s reaction
about a fiction in many things as well.
The point of view in a novel discusses about who tells the story or from
which position the events are perceived. Therefore, the selection of form which is
being used will influence the development of the story and problem that are being
told.
It directs to the way of telling the story in a novel. It is the way or
perception which is used by the author as a device to show the characters, action,
setting, and many kinds of events which are from the story in a fiction to the
readers. So, viewpoint truthfully is the strategy or technique that is chosen by the
author intentionally to tell his/her idea in the story.
According to Peck, point of view is the technique that is used by the
author to find and tell the meaning of his artistic work to the readers. The author
connection to the readers. The readers need clear perception about the view point.
Viewpoint is not only considered as the way dramatic limitation but also
considered as serving thematic definition. Because a novel offers values, attitude
and life perception which is controlled and served by the author intentionally
through point of view.
3.5.1 The first person Point of View
In this point of view, the story is involved in the story. He/she is the “I” or
the character which is telling his self-consciousness, telling events and reaction
and that are known, seen, experienced, and feet by the readers. The readers accept
what the “I” tell, so they can see and feel definitely like what is seen and felt by
the character “I”
The “I” of course has a name, but the name is seldom called because he is
telling his experience himself. The name of the “I” may call in the other character.
In this point of view, the author knows about himself, but doesn’t know about
another character that is involved in the story.
First person point of view is differentiated into two groups based on the role
and status of the “I” in the story. The “I” may occupy protagonist or main
character, may become peripheral character character or as a witness.
3.5.1.1 The “I” as Main Character
In this technique, the “I” the event and behaviour which is experienced by
himself, either physically or psychologically. The “I” becomes focus, center of
conciousness, and center of story. Everything outside the “I” such as events,
The experiences of life that are told by the character “I” will have close relation
with the readers experience.
3.5.1.2 The “I” as Peripheral Character
Technique of the “I” in this kind is presented to provide the story to the
readers. The “I” as peripheral character appears as witness of events that are
happened to another character.
3.5.2 The third person point of View
This point of view uses the author as the person who is outside of the story
and appears as the characters by telling their names, or their substitute: he, she,
and they. The names of the character, especially the main character, are called
continuously or their substitute. So, the readers are easier to know who the
characters are.
Third person point of view is called as “he”, which can be differentiated into
two groups based on the level of independence’s author in his story. In one side,
the author can be independent to tell everything he knows about the character “he”
who is called the omniscient author or third person omniscient. And another side,
the is dependent to tell the “he”, so he can only be the observer.
2.5.2.1 “He” as omniscient person
In this point of view, the story is told from the side of “he”. But in this
case the author can tell anything about “he”. The author knows everything about
the character, events, action and motivation. He is free to move and tell
2.5.2.2 “He” as Observer
In this point of view, the author describes the things are seen, heard,
experienced, thought and felt by the character but definitely in one character.
Maybe there are many character as the “he” but they are not given change to show
themselves like the first character. Therefore, there is only one character is
selected in this technique; this character is focus, reflection, or center of
conciousness.
2.5.2.3 The Mixed Point of View
A novel may use more than one point of view. The author can change the
point of view from one technique to another in a story made. All of them depend
on the author creativity, how he uses the technique to reach the effectiveness of
telling the story in order to give impression to the readers.
The use of this point of view in a novel maybe as the third person with
technique “he” as omniscient person and “he” as observer, or first person with the
technique “I” the main character and “I” as the peripheral character, or maybe a
4. THE ANALYSIS OF INTRINSIC ELEMENTS OF POSTERN OF FATE
In this chapter the writer would like to analyze the intrinsic elements of
Postern of Fate novel, which is involved theme, plot, characters (main characters
and peripheral characters), setting (place and time) and the view point.
4.1 The Analysis of Theme
The theme that is implied in Postern of Fate talking about the Mystery of
Past Murdered. The case is began when Tuppence reads a book which written by
Stevenson on title “Black Arrow”. She found somethingstrange in the story.
Thereare some words which underlined with the ink red ink "Mary Jordan
unnatural death, she was one of us. Due to seeing the words with the red ink
causes her open that book and read it thouroughly. .
Such book is about the assassination of a young woman named Mary
Jordan . the assassination is still in a big question. Nobody knows how Mary
Jordan murdered.
4.2 The Analysis of Plot
Based on the criterion of times order the story uses a progressive plot in
general because the author tells the story chronologically. She starts the story by
