Hanna Chalista Devi. C0313021. An Analysis of Techniques and Quality of Translation of Clauses Containing Non-Standard Negation Ain’t in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer Novel. Thesis: English Department of Faculty of Cultural Sciences. Universitas Sebelas Maret.
This research is conducted to analyze the techniques and the quality of
translation of clauses containing non-standard negation ain’t in the novel entitled
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The writer analyses and discusses the types of ain’t, the techniques to translate the clauses containing non-standard negation ain’t, and the impact of the translation techniques on the translation quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. This research employs
descriptive qualitative method. The sources of data consists of documents and
informants. The writer applies purposive sampling technique to select the data
source. The methods of data collection are content analysis, focus group
discussion (FGD), and data collection using questionnaire. The writer finds that
there are 119 clauses containing non-standard negation ain’t.
This research reveals that there are five types of non-standard negation ain’t in the novel entitled The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which are ain’t as auxiliary be, ain’t as copula be, ain’t as auxiliary have, ain’t as main verb for
have, and ain’t as generic negator before main verb. The second finding points out
that there are 14 different techniques applied by the translator in translating the
clauses containing non-standard negation ain’t in the novel. The last finding
suggests the level of the accuracy of the translation of clauses containing
non-standard negation ain’t in the novel is less accurate. The level of the acceptability
is less acceptable, and the level of the readability is readable.
