INTRODUCTION
A. The Background of the study
All human beings need languages for communication either in spoken or
written. It cannot be separated from human life. It has so many interrelationships
with aspects and it also indicates the existence of human being. One of the
characters of human beings is the ability to communicate with every aspect of the
activity.
Language plays a crucial role and a vital role in human life and also has
many advantages of many various aspects of human life. By language, people are
able to interact and communicate one another for whatever they do. The usage of
language itself influenced by many factors such as the expansion of period, the
social factors (gender, education, age, occupation, racial and ethnic, environment).
The relationship between language and society puts forward a field of
study called sociolinguistics. It is the study of relationships between language and
society with the goal being a better understanding of the structure of language and
how languages function in communication.
Style is well known as variety of language, the way individuals speak
varies not only according to their original and social dialects but also according to
the context. The distinctive manner in which people express themselves in a
a message. The using of style will influence the meaning and certain due to the
situation.
Aini (2003) in his journal Language Used in Business E-mail, based on
Joos’ theory found that there are two types of language style in Language Used in
Business E-mail and formal language is the most dominant type. Formal language
is communication between company and their costumer by using e-mail. It is not
only to promote the product but also give information.
Another journal that uses language style is Pattern of Speech
Accommodation and Lexical Formality in Telephone Conversation of Persian
Native Speaker (Dabagh & Mirzain, 2010). They focus in telephone conversation
of Persian native speaker. They want to know what the native speaker use. After
the analyzing the data, they found three kinds of language style in telephone
conversation such as, formal, consultative and casual. The consultative style is the
dominant kind of language style that is found in the telephone conversation,
because there is a lot back-channeling.
In this modern era, movie is set there have been many shift and changes in
culture and society, as well as advances in media technology. There have been
also the ways we use language, in term of grammar vocabulary ad accent. English
is language that evolving all the time under a wide range of influenced. The
challenge for the movie maker is to present day, yet still makes sense to the
modern viewer.
All human use language style in daily life speech and communication. A
because movie is actually a representation of real conversation in natural society.
Especially movie is one of the medium where to found form of language style.
The making of movie is also has a social dimension for several reason. Movie
makers are member of society. Every movie has unique style. It can show from
the dialog of the character in the movie. Every character has the different of the
style when they speak, especially of the antagonist or protagonist.
The writer takes King’s Speech movie to represent the different use of
language style. King’s Speech is the true story of Bertie. Bertie who has suffered
from a debilitating speech impediment all his life, is suddenly crowned King
Speech was a major box office and critical success. The King’s Speech won seven
British Academy Film Awards for the best picture, best actor, best supporting
actor, best supporting actress. The writer chooses Colin Firth plays as “Bertie”
because he is the reflection of King’s Speech Movie and tells about George VI.
In this thesis, The writer analyze the five language styles, style is
essentially to do with an individual’s use of language (Lee, 2001:45). Those are
frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate style found in King’s Speech
Movie. We have known the styles of language are parts of language variation that
are used for specific purpose. Frozen style is a variety used in the most formal,
solemn situation in official celebration. For example of frozen style in this movie,
“Yes, my lord”. Formal style is the variety used in formal speeches and meeting.
For example, “Would you help me?”. Consultative is variety appropriate in
used in simple situation. For example, “Not finished yet”. Intimate style is the
variety used among members of family. For example, “Dear honey”.
It is important to study language style in movie because the study made
the readers saw the usage of language style in movie not only in their
communication. The way individuals speak varies not only according to their
original and social dialects but also according to the context. The distinctive
manner in which people express themselves in a particular situation is referred to
as style.
Every movie has unique style. It can show from the dialog of the character
in the movie. Every character has the different of style when they speak,
especially of the antagonist or protagonist.
From the explanation above, the writer take a movie to represent the
utterances that are usually used in human life because movie is actually a
representation of real conversation in natural society. Especially movie is one of
the medium where to found form of language style. The making of movie is also
has a social dimension for several reason. Movie makers are member of society.
Since the time in which the movie is set there have been many shift and
changes in culture and society, as well as advances in media technology. There
have been also to the way we use language, in terms of grammar vocabulary and
accent. English is a language that is evolving all the time under a wide range of
influences. The challenge for the movie maker is to present a version of the past
that seems different enough from the present day, yet still makes sense to the
After the death of his father King George V, Bertie (Colin Firth) who has

need of a leader, his wife, Elizabeth, the future Queen Mother, arranges for her
husband to see an eccentric speech therapist, Lionel Logue. With the support of
Logue, his family, the King will overcome his stammer and deliver a
