CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. The Background of the Study
Language is very important in our life, because language is used to express
our inner thoughts and emotion, to learn to communicate with others, to fulfill our
wants and needs, etc. In general, Languages can be exposed into two ways,
namely written language and spoken language. Written language can be found in
novel, newspaper, poetry, comic, etc, while spoken language can be found in
speech, dialogue, song, etc.
Nowadays, novel becomes very popular in society. People enjoy novel not
only as an entertainment, but also as a media in transferring information and
culture. Novel itself is a visual medium used to express ideas. The text in novel
indicates the dialogue, narration and other information. The characterization of the
main character in the novel cannot be separated from the novel because most of
the people read the novel because they want to know how the characterization of
the main character is.
A novel has an intrinsic element, however not all of the readers know
about it. Sometime the reader read the novel because they just want to know how

In terms of studying literature on the reflection of human experience, the

The characterization of the character is very often drives the readers to be
interested to read the novel. However, sometime the readers find it difficult to
appreciate the technique of the characterizations in literary works especially in the

characterization in a novel, they are: a) telling or direct method; and b) showing or
indirect method. She explains that telling method is when the author tells about
the characterization of a character directly but in showing method the author tells
it indirectly. So in showingmethod, we have to try to know it hardly.
With those explanations above, the writer is interested in analyzing the
characterization of The Land of Five Towers novel by Faudy based on intrinsic
element of the novel. The writer does this study because the writer is interested to
know more about the intrinsic element of this novel especially with the method
that is used by the author of the novel to develop the characterization of the main
character. It is interested because the writer realizes in our daily life, sometime
when we read a novel we do not know about how the author develops the
characterization of the main character because the author of the novel does not
describe the intrinsic novel and the characterization clearly.
The writer chose The Land of Five Towers novel as source data because
