Grammar is partly the study of what forms or construction are possible in a language. Traditional grammar is a grammar which focuses on the analysis of the construction of the sentence. Sentence can be divided in two kinds, these are active and passive sentence. The passive sentence is very important in English. Probably quite 90 per cent of the passive sentences spoken or written are of the type replacing the indefinite pronoun reflexives in other language. In fact, most of English grammar book still have little example of passive sentence.

The objectives of this research are to find out the tenses of the passive sentences in the headline news of the Jakarta Post issued in January 2014 and the constructions of the passive sentences in the headline news of the Jakarta Post issued in January 2014

In this research the writer uses qualitative research and employs the descriptive method to explore the language research to observe descriptively about passive sentence found in the headline news of the Jakarta post issued in January 2014.

While, based on the construction the writer found 10 constructions, these are 26 S+(is,am,are)+V3, 5 S+(is,am,are)+being+V3, 21 S=(have,has)+been+V3, 71 S+(was,were)+V3, 4 S+(was,were)+being+V3, 15 S+had+been+V3, 11 S+(shall,will)+be+V3, 16 S+(would,should)+be+V3, 3 S+(can,must,may)+be+V3, 7 S+(could, had to,might)+be+V3. In this analysis simple past is the dominant tense in the headline news of the Jakarta post issued in January 2014. It can be concluded most of the news in the Jakarta post are taken from the past event.

Finally, in the writer’s suggestion, the readers who want to add their knowledge about grammar can use news paper. The readers can found many tenses of sentence with different construction. For the students, to find many variations of example of passive sentence they can use the newspaper as one of the media especially in the Jakarta post.

Sementara itu, berdasarkan konstruksi penulis menemukan 10 konstruksi, 26 S+(is,am,are)+V3, 5 S+(is,am,are)+being+V3, 21 S=(have,has)+been+V3, 71 S+(was,were)+V3, 4 S+(was,were)+being+V3, 15 S+had+been+V3, 11 S+(shall,will)+be+V3, 16 S+(would,should)+be+V3, 3 S+(can,must,may)+be+V3, 7 S+(could, had to,might)+be+V3.
