Narrative Text at SMPN 4 Kunto

Darussalam of Rohul Regency

Based on the writer’s preliminary observation, it was found that the students could not comprehend the meaning of texts in their text books at the school. This problem was caused by some factors. For example, some of the students were not able to identify the main idea of narrative text, they were not able to identify supporting detail in narrative text, they were not able to recognize the generic structure of narrative text, they had limited vocabularies and also they were not able to identify pronominal reference of narrative text. So, the writer was interested in carrying out the research about these problems.

The research was administered at SMPN 4 Kunto Darussalam. The subject of the research was the eight grade students of SMPN 4 Kunto Darussalam, and the object of this research was the effect of using Finding Signal Word strategy on reading comprehension in narrative text. The design of this research was quasi-experimental design with non equivalent control group design.

The population of this research was all of the eight grade students. The total number of population was 157 students. Because the number of population was relatively large, the writer used cluster sampling by taking two classes as sample; class X 1 consisted of 30 students as an experimental class, and class X 2 consisted of 30 students as control class, so the number of sample from two classes was 60 students. To analyze the data, the writer adopted Independent sample T-test formula by using SPSS 16.0 version.

Finally, based on the analysis of T-test formula, H0 was rejected and Ha

was accepted. It means that there is a significant effect of using Finding Signal Word strategy on reading comprehension in narrative text at SMPN 4 Kunto Darussalam of Rohul Regency.

Signal Word terhadap Pemahaman Bacaan dalam Teks Naratif di SMPN 4 Kunto Darussalam Kabupaten Rohul

Berdasarkan observasi awal penulis, ditemukan bahwa, siswa belum mampu memahami sebuah bacaan dalam buku pelajaran di sekolah. Masalah ini disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor. Misalnya, sebagian siswa tidak mampu mengidentifikasi ide utama dari teks naratif, tidak mampu mengidentifikasi informasi tertentu di dalam teks naratif, tidak mampu menentukan generic structure dari teks naratif, memiliki sedikit kosa kata dan juga tidak mampu mengidentifikasi pronominal reference dari teks naratif. Jadi, penulis tertarik mengadakan penelitian tentang masalah tersebut.

Penelitian ini diadakan di SMPN 4 Kunto Darussalam. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas dua SMPN 4 Kunto Darussalam, dan objek dari penelitian ini adalah dampak dari penggunaan strategi Finding Signal Word terhadap pemahaman membaca dalam teks naratif. Adapun jenis penelitiannya adalah quasi-experiment dengan mode non equivalent control group.

Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas dua. Keseluruhan dari jumlah populasi adalah 157 siswa. Dikarenakan jumlah populasi relatif banyak, peneliti menggunakan cluster sampling untuk mengambil dua kelas sebagai sampel: kelas X1 yang terdiri dari 30 siswa sebagai kelas eksperimen, dan kelas X 2 yang terdiri dari 30 siswa sebagai kelas control. Jadi, jumlah sampel dari dua kelas tersebut adalah 60 siswa. Untuk data analisisnya, peneliti menggunakan Independent sample T-test melalui SPSS 16.0.

Akhirnya, berdasarkan analisis data dari formula T-test, H0 ditolak dan Ha

diterima. Maksudnya, ada pengaruh yang signifikan dari strategi Finding Signal Word untuk meningkatkan pemahaman membaca dalam teks naratif siswa kelas dua di SMPN 4 Kunto Darussalam kabupaten Rohul.

The title of this thesis is The Effect of Using Finding Signal Word Strategy toward Reading Comprehension on Narrative Text at SMPN 4 Kunto Darussalamof Rohul Regency”.
