ABSTRACT
Obesity is a health problem that increased along with lifestyle changes. In Indonesia, the prevalence of obesity increased from 7.8% in 2010 to 19.7% in 2013. One of the complications that often occur in obese population is the declining of the lung function.
The aim of this study is to determine the difference in lung function of the obese and the normal weight groups. This research is an observational analytic study with cross-sectional approach. The subjects were students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sumatera Utara as many as 120 people, consisting of two groups; 60 of obese group and 60 people with normal weight group who performed pulmonary function tests using spirometry. The data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney and T-Independent test.
The result of data analysis in59 men (49.9%) and 61 women (50.8%) showed that there wer e significant differences (p< 0.05) in expiratory reserve volume (ERV), residual volume (RV), and total lung capacity (TLC) between the obese group and normal weight group. However, the results obtained were not significant (p> 0.05) in tidal volume (TV), inspiratory reserve volume (IRV), inspiratory capacity (IC), vital capacity (VC), and functional residual capacity (FRC).
