Agenda Item 7: Matters Arising from the First ASFN Meeting
Pursuant to the endorsement of the establishment of the ASEAN Social Forestry Network (ASFN) by the ASEAN Senior Officials on Forestry (ASOF) during the 8th ASOF Meeting in August 2008 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the Ministry of Forestry of Indonesia as Lead Country of the initiative for ASEAN Cooperation in Social Forestry hosted the First Meeting of the ASFN on 21 – 24 April 2007 in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia.
2. The First ASFN Meeting provided venue for sharing of knowledge and experiences in networking and social forestry capacity building among representatives of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand, as well as the ICRAF, RECOFTC, EC/UNDP/SEARCA SGPPTF, and the ASEAN Secretariat.
3. Results of the Meeting were the adopted Terms of Reference (TOR) and Rules of Procedures (ROP) of the ASFN, as well as the Strategic Plan of Action of the ASEAN Cooperation in Social Forestry (2007 – 2012). The Meeting also developed brief project concept paper for the ASFN for further improvement according to the format of ASEAN as well as the targeted partner organizations.
4. Indonesia as Host Country of the Meeting and Lead Country of the initiative presented the results of the First ASFN Meeting to the ASOF during the 10th ASOF Meeting in July 2007 in Vientiane, Lao PDR. The 10th ASOF Meeting endorsed the Terms of Reference (TOR), Rules of Procedure (ROP) and Strategic Plan of Action (2007-2012) of the ASFN, and agreed in-principle to the concept paper that was developed under the purview of the ASFN for a joint programme in social forestry with partner organizations, for improvement and further process of project consideration.
