ABSTRACT
A STUDY ON GRAMMATICAL ERRORS OF THE 5th SEMESTER
STUDENTS’ TRANSLATION OF INDONESIAN – ENGLISH AT MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF PURWOKERTO

This research was aimed to know how good the students’ translation
competence and find out grammatical errors made by students in translating a text from Indonesian into English.This research used a descriptive method that was conducted at the 5th Semester students of English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto. The data were collected through test in the form of translation text. Then, the data analyzed by scoring the students’ translation work, calculating the percentage of students’ score, and analyzing the students’ translation result.
The result of this research showed that from 32 students as the sample in this research, there were 23 students (71,875%) of the fifth semester students of English Education Department of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto which had translation competence in good category. Moreover, 9 students (28,125 %) were in very good category. The grammatical errors made the most by the students were on plural noun (47,2%), noun phrase (21,4%), gerund (15,4%), and subject-verb agreement (16%). The most number of errors found in the students‟ translated text was on plural noun that were 47,2% and the fewest number of errors was on gerund that was 15,4%. Looking at the result, it can be said that the Indonesian-English translation competence of the students was good with 23 students as the majority and the grammatical error that usually made by the students was on plural noun.
