1 CHAPTER I A. Background of the Study

Nowadays, in this globalization era, it is very difficult to create Islamic society, and it needs a lot of things to create an Islamic society. Some of them are the ability to read and understand al- Qur„an, because al Qur‟an suggests people to deepen their knowledge in various fields of science.

The first step in obtaining and understanding all guidance in the Qur‟an is by reading. Islamic religion puts more concerns in this reading activity, it is proven by the first verse which first down is the order to read.

َقَلَخ ْيذَّلا َكِّبَر ِمْس اِب أَرْ قِا

“Read: In the name of thy Lord Who created,” (QS Al-Alaq : 1)

In the holy Qur‟an, Allah SWT suggest us to recite al-Qur‟an correctly so we can comprehend it well. Allah SWT said in surah muzzamil verse 4

ًليِتْرَ ت َنآْرُقْلا ِلِّتَرَو ِهْيَلَع ْدِز ْوَأ

Or add (a little) thereto – and chant the Qur‟an in measure” (QS Al -Muzamil : 4)

(17)

Al-2

Qur‟an have an obligation and responsibility to the holy Qur‟an. One of the

obligation and the responsibility is to learn and to teach it. Learning and teaching Al-Qur‟an is a noble and holy obligation. Our prophet Muhammad PBUH said as narrated by bukhari, which means “the best of you are those who learn Al-Qur‟an and teach it. (Departemen Agama RI, 2007: 9).

To realize the ability of a person in reading and understanding the holy

Qur‟an, parent is the first oversee and foremost. It is because, every parent

always hope that their children can be good children and love the holy Qur‟an, and finally the children always make good attitude to their parents, useful to the religion, the state, the people and become people who can be trusted by the society.

To make children competent in reading Al-Qur‟an, moreover in practicing it, it needs to be addressed seriously and continuously. But occasionally parents afford to teach, it may because of some limitations. This limitations are likely because of limited time, limited capability and skill of reading Al-Qur‟an etc.

(18)

3

of his intelligence. (Azzet , 2010: 24 ) This is the role of parent as the first and foremost oversee for the children. One of them is by teaching them to read and to

understand the holy Qur‟an.

One form of intelligence is spiritual intelligence. Azzet in his book titled

SQ; spiritual intelligence, the ultimate intelligence consider that spiritual intelligence is the highest form of intelligence which combined the other two forms of intelligence: the intellectual intelligence and the emotional intelligence. Spiritual Intelligence valued as the highest intelligence because closely related to awareness of someone to handle all things and to feel happiness.

Spiritual Intelligence is closely related to behavior and people because based on the awareness in handling all things. Even intellectual intelligence only contributes 20 percent in success of someone while 80 percent depend on emotional intelligence, social intelligence and spiritual intelligence. In fact intellectual intelligence only contributes 4 percent in success work. (http://repository.upi.edu/operator/upload/s_pst 034592 _chapter2 .pdf.)

(19)

4

feel happiness, refer to who has no spiritual intelligence (azzet, 2010:38). But it

doesn‟t mean spiritual intelligence unconnected at all with religion. It is not directly connected because spiritual intelligence closely related to someones psychic, but it should be noted that religion are closely connected to someone psychic.

This is related to the students‟ obligation of SMA Muhammadiyah 09 Sambirejo to join the study of Al-Qur‟an every Monday and Thursday morning. Yet, there were some students who were absent with the reason of sick and being late. When Ramadhan comes, there will be many events in the school which are related with this topic, the study of Al-Qur‟an ; such as reading holy Qur‟an, speeching, break fast together, study Al-Qu‟an etc. Since the school finishes in the evening, dzuhur praying should be performed by all students together. Yet, some students lazily go to mosque to perform it.

According to the problem above, the writer observed the students

intensity of their reading Qur‟an towards developing spiritual intelligence, finally

the writer is interested in conducting research entitled “CORRELATION

STUDY ON THE INTENSITY OF READING AL-QUR‟AN TOWARDS DEVELOPING SPIRITUAL INTELLIGENCE OF STUDENTS GRADE XI OF

(20)

5 B.Question of the Study

To clarify the problem that is going to be analyzed, the statements of the problems are formulated as follow:

1. How good is the intensity of reading Al-Qur‟an students grade XI of SMA Muhammadiyah 09 in Sambirejo?

2. How good is the developing of spiritual intelligence of students grade XI SMA Muhammadiyah 09 in Sambirejo?

3. Is there a significant correlation between intensity of reading al-Qur‟an against developing spiritual intelligence of students grade XI of SMA Muhammadiyah 09 in Sambirejo?

C.Purpose of the Study

In correlation to the research question already stated the purpose of this research are:

1. To find out how good the intensity of reading Al-Qur‟an students grade XI of SMA Muhammadiyah 09 in Sambirejo.

2. To find out how good the developing spiritual intelligence of students grade XI of SMA Muhammadiyah 09 in Sambirejo.

(21)

6 D.Action Hypothesis

Hypothesis means the opinion that the truth is still low or the level of truth is not assured, the truth of the opinion is need to be tested or proven (sudjana : 1988 : 37) Hypothesis is a predicated answer of research problem with data (Arikunto, 2006:102). According to the explanation of theories before, the writer states the hypothesis as follows: there is a significant correlation between intensity of reading al-Qur‟an towards spiritual intelligence of students grade XI of SMA Muhammadiyah 09 in Sambirejo.

E.Significance of the Study

This research is aimed to give benefit academicaly or practically as follows:

1. Theoretical benefit

This research‟s results can give support for the development of knowledge, especially for Islamic education. It belongs to correlation between intensity of reading Al-Qur‟an towards spiritual intelligence.

2. Partical benefit

(22)

7

higher perception for teacher and parent to to implant the spiritual intelligence for students

F. Limitation of the Research

Based on the identification of the problem mentioned above, The research focused on the students‟ intensity of reading Al-Qur‟an towards developing spiritual intelligence of students grade XI of SMA Muhammadiyah 09 Sambirejo in the academic year 2016/2017

G. Review of Previous Research

In this graduating paper, the researcher reviews several related studies to support this paper from the other graduating papers. One of them is a study by Mardiyah, a student of State Institute of Islamic Studies (STAIN) Salatiga, in his research entitle “ A Correlation Study on the Intensity of Reading Al-Qur‟an towards Student Interaction Grade VII of MTS Sudirman Kopeng, Getasan, Semarang district 2012”. There are differences and similarities with the research that conducted by the author. The difference lies in the variables studied by Mardiyah, which focuses in the student interaction in daily school. While the writer focuses to the spirituality of the student and the development of spiritual intelligence of student in senior high school. While the similarity of the research is both examine in the same variable, intensity of reading Al-Qur‟an.

(23)

surrah Luqman verse 13-19)”. There are differences with the research that conducted by the writer. The difference lies in the variables studied by Nurul, which focuses in the devloping emotional and spiritual intelligence contained in surrah Luqman verse 13-19. While the writer examines developing spiritual intelligence of students in SMA Muhammadiyah 09 in Sambirejo.

The third study had been done by Eva Fairuzia, a student of Sunan Kalijogo State of Islamic University Yogyakarta, in her thesis entitle

“Implementation of dhuha prayer in developing spiritual intelligence of student

grade VII in MTS Pundong Bantul”. There are differences with the research that conducted by the writer. The difference lies in the variables studied by Eva, which examines the influence between dhuha prayer towards developing spiritual intelligence. Eva focuses in dhuha prayer and the writer focuses in the intensity of reading Al-Qur‟an of Students. While the similarity of the research is both examine in the same variable, developing spiritual intelligence.

(24)

9 H.Definition of Key Terms

To avoid missunderstanding of the tittle of this research, the researcher explains the terms as follow:

1. Intensity

Intensity is the quality of being felt strongly or having a very strong effect (http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/intensity). In other word, intensity is the condition where someone excited of doing something that can be measured by the frequency, quantity, and comprehension.

2. Reading Al-Qur‟an

Reading is defined as spelled letter by letter, recite or utter and understand the contents of what is written. (poerwardaminto , 2001 : 27) .

Al-Qur‟an is the word (book) of Allah SWT that is worth the miracle that was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad SAW by the Angel Gabriel intermediary inherited muttawatir (step by step, verse by verse) and read Al-Qur‟an is worship, that begins with the letter of Al-Fatihah and closed with a letter of An-Nas (Ash-Shaabuuniy, 2001 : 3)

3. Spiritual Intelligence

(25)

10

associated with psychological nature (spiritual, mental) (kamus besar bahasa indoneisa , 2010 : 1503)

Danah Zohar and Ian Marshall defines spiritual intelligence is intelligence to face and solve the problems of life with meaning and value, the intelligence to put the behavior and life in the context of a broader meaning and rich, intelligence to judge that the action or the way a person's life is more meaningful than another.

Tasmara (2003: 49) defines spiritual intelligence is the ability to listen to his conscience, good or bad and moral sense in the way he put himself in the association.

While the spiritual intelligence is the intelligence that lifts the soul functions as an internal tool of self that has the ability and sensitivity to see the meaning is behind a particular fact or accident. (Azzet, 2010: 31)

I. Method of Research

The role of the method in this research is essential to achieve goals of the study. The method used in this research is:

A. Approach of the Research

(26)

11

correlation of variable intensity reading Al-Qur'an (variable X) towards spiritual intelligence (variable Y).

B. Population and Sample of the Research a. Population

Population is all members of the research subject (Arikunto,

2006:130). Best (1981:8) states that, “population is any group of

individuals that have one or more characteristics in common”. So, in this

research, population of the research was the students of SMA Muhammadiyah 09 in Sambirejo

b. Sample

Sample is a part of the population which is investigated (Arikunto, 2006:131). If the quantity of research subject less than 100, then it will be better to take all of it. So, it was regarded as a population research. But if the quantity of research subject is more than 100, the researcher can take 10-15% or 20-25% from the population.

(27)

12

The quantity of the student grade XI of SMA Muhammadiyah 09 in Sambirejo is 26 students. Beacause the quantity of research subject less than 100, then it will be better to take all of it

C. Technique of Collecting Data

Technique of collecting data is the way that can be used by writer to collect data (Arikunto, 2006: 134) the writer in this research using the following method:

a. Questionnaire

(28)

13

After obtained data and before the test data used as a mean of measuring the correlation on the students‟ intensity of reading

Al-Qur‟an againts developing spiritual intelligence, it is necessary to test the validity of that question from each item. From the validity test calculation result gained the r count that consulted with r table. If r count > r table it means valid, and if r count < r table it means not valid, and it is based on the r table Pearson coefficient for N = 26 in the 5% significant level is 0,388. In this test, the writer uses IBM SPSS Statistics version 18.

Moreover, besides the validity test of the questioner result on the

students‟ intensity of reading Al-Qur‟an it is also needed to test the reliability on it. The reliability test calculated also using IBM SPSS Statistics version 18.

In this research the questionnaire method used to know the

students‟ intensity of reading Qur‟an towards spiritual intelligence of

student SMA Muhammadiyah 09 Sambirejo. b. Interview

Interview is a way to collect information materials carried by a question and answer dialogue or orally either unilaterally or face to face (Sudjana, 1992:82).

(29)

14

1) Guided interview often known as structured or systematic interviews.

2) Unguided interview or simple interview so the process of data collection is done freely and not systematic.

In the implementation the writer uses guided and unguided interviews, the meaning is in carrying out the interview, the interviewer only brings outline guidance about the things that will be asked so the implementation of the interview feel more relaxed, calm, and close to the interviewee (Sudjana, 1992:83).

c. Documentation

Documentation is the form of notes, which is seeking data on things or variables such as notes, books transcript, meeting minutes, agendas etc. (Arikunto: 2003: 206).

This method is used to obtain information and data needed about SMA Muhammadiyah 09 Sambirejo, such as the history of high school, state schools etc.

d. Observation

(30)

15

In this study, the authors use direct observation method that is used to collect data about the location of the rsearch, that is Senior high school of Muhammadiyah 9 Sambirejo and the daily process of students in school to determine the background of the problem.

D. Variable of the Research

Hadi describes variable as symptoms of vary r objects that have variations in the value of research or study that has investigated. (Hadi , 1994 : 97). there are two types of variables, the first one is independent vaiables: this variables are often called with stimulus, prediktor, antecednt variables. In

the Indonesian language are often called with “variabel bebas”. Independent vaiables is the variabel that influence the change or the emergence of dependent variable. Then dependent variables: this variables ae often called with output, criteria, konsekuen variables. In the Indonesian languge are often

called with “Variabel terikat”. Dependent variables is the variable that is influnced because of independent variable (Sugiyono : 2011 : 39).

(31)

16 variable. Then the indicator becomes the starting point to arrange instrument items that can be questions or statements (Sugiyono : 2011 : 93).

To obtain the data variable X the writer using a questionnaire given to students of grade XI of SMA Muhammadiyah 09 in Sambirejo and for variable Y, the writer also use a questionnaire given to respondents.

E. Technique of Data Analysis

In order to analyze the data, following step will be applied: a. Preface Analysis

After obtained the data, the writer will require an accounting early data collected. In this case, the writer uses calculation of percentage analysis. The formula is:

P =

x 100%

P : percentage

(35)

20

N : sum of respondent

b. Use product moment correlation formula.

The writer uses product moment formula as the technique of data analysis (Sugiyono, 2011:183).

The formula is:

between intensity of reading al-Qur‟an towards developing spiritual intelligence of students grade XI of senior high school 09 muhammadiyah in sambirejo

J. Research Organization

To make easier for the reader to understand the contents of the graduating paper, the writer decides to organize this paper into five chapters:

Chapter I is the introduction which consists of the background of the research, question of the research, purpose of the research, action hypothesis, significance of the research, limitation of the research, definition of key terms, method of research, and thesis organization.

Chapter II is a theoretical review. This part presents the research result theories or related research studies on similar field.

(37)

22

Chapter IV is presenting data analysis. The research questions will get answer in this chapter. To make it clearer for the readers, the researcher suggests the discussions of the findings.

(38)

CHAPTER II LITERATURE REVIEW

A.Al-Qur’an

1. The Definition of Al-Qur‟an

The word Al-Qur'an as well as the word Qiro'ah, it is infinitive from word Qara'a, Qiraatan and Qur'anan means reading (Assabuuny, 1999:25). It is explained in verses 17-18 of Surah Al Qiyamah

ُهَعَْجَ اَنْ يَلَع َّنِإ

recitation. (17) So when we have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its

recitation. (18)” (Q.S Al-Qiyamah 17-18)

According to Muhammad Abd. Azim Az Zarqani, the Qur'an is a book that became a miracle that was sent down to the Prophet Muhammad SAW in writing in mashof and delivered sequentially who read Al-Qur‟an will get the worship (Asnawi, 2004:2)

According to Sheikh Muhammad Khudari Beik, the Qur'an is

(39)

24

According to Sheikh Muhammad Abduh, the Qur'an is the reading that have been written in mashaf which awake in the rote-memorization of the Muslims (Asnawi, 2004: 3)

From the definitions above, it can be concluded that the Qur'an is the word of Allah in Arabic language which become the miracle that was sent down to the Prophet Muhammad SAW written in mashaf delivered

sequentially and reading the Qur‟an is the worship, which begins from Al -Fatihah and ends with An Naas letter.

2. The Virtue of Al-Qur‟an

There are so many virtues of Al-Qur'an. Al-Qur'an can be a cure from various diseases, Al-Quran is a clue, Al-Qur'an is a book that gives a warning and good news. Beiduzzaman Said Nursi (2010 : 293) mentioned six points of the virtues of Al-Qur'an, that is:

a. The First Point

(40)

25

b. The Second Point

The Qur'an produces great change, brings happiness, and enlightens human social life. In addition, the Qur'an always brings about that great change for the soul, heart and human reason, as well as for social and personal life. The six thousand and six hundred verses, which have been quoted with the reverence of many humans for centuries. The Qur'an educates people spiritually and intellectually, purifies the human soul, cleans the mind, brings joy, powers the spirit, leads to the truth, and makes people happy.

c. The Third Point

From the beginning, the elocurrence of the Qur'an has attracted the interest of literary people. For example the Quran defeats the seven poems. When he dropped his father's poem from the wall, the labid daughter declared "after the coming of this Al-Qur'anic revelation, all the poetry is meaningless". All because the eloquence of the Quran is more beautiful than the seven poems.

(41)

26

"make a sura like mysurrah, or you will suffer with contempt and will destroy the world-hereafter for refusing me". The disbelieving literary people of the time of the prophet could not meet this challenge, so chose to fight it. This proves that any argument against the Qur'an is useless.

d. The Fourth Point

Al-Quran is so enthralling, though read over and over, never make people who read feel bored. Al-Quran provides a continuing pleasure. The Qur'an maintains its freshness and authenticity, as if it were revealed. His memorization is so vast and aged "14" centuries. Every century it feels that the Qur'an is direct to that century where the original style and explanation of the Quran is maintained.

e. The Fifth Point

(42)

27

f. The Sixth Point

The six sides or aspects of the Qur'an glow and display the truth. From below, the Quran is supported by pillars of signs and evidence (eg, rationally, intellectually, and historically, all of which offend a strong conscience and opinion); above Al-quran is the key of miracles; before the Qur'an spreads the happiness of the world and the hereafter as its target; behind the Qur'an is another supporting point: the truth of God's revelation. On the right side of the Qur'an, there is full affirmation of the guiding mind, and on its left is a spiritual and intellectual satisfaction with a clean conscience, and a sincere attachment and submission to it. All this is a witness that the Qur'an is a fortress that can not be conquered, extraordinary and solid.

3. The Basis of Reading Al-Qur'an

(43)

28

“Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation. (17) So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its

recitation. (18)” (Q.S Al-Qiyamah 17-18)

When the revelation of God was lowered for the first time, which received by the Prophet Muhammad SAW, Jibril said: Iqra' (read). "Maa anna bi qori'?" (I cannot read) said the Prophet Muhammad SAW that question was not to be answered, because Allah wanted him to remain in a state of unlettered. The command to read is a direct command sent by Allah. Reading is the beginning of a command to know and think about the self-existence and God as creator (Agustian, 2005: 181)

4. The Intensity of Reading Al-Qur'an

Many aspects can be concluded from reading Al-Qur‟an. According to Maududi in Mardiyah (2012 : 33) mention some of indicators that could be seen by reading Al-Qur‟an, The intensity of reading the Qur'an could be seen from several aspects, including:

a. The Frequency or Level of Reading Al-Qur‟an

(44)

29

“Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allah and establish prayer and spend [in His cause] out of what We have provided them, secretly and

publicly, [can] expect a profit that will never perish” (Q.S Al-Fatir : 29) The ability of reading Al-Qur‟an would be better if the learner practices the reading and understands the guidance by people who have the knowledge on how to read and understand the Qur'an (Ash Shabuuniy, 2009: 22). Through guidance and routine of reading the Qur'an, the learner would get used to recite verses of al- Quran and practice makes perfect of reading the Quran.

b. Experience the Content of The Qur‟an Fully

Living (Experience the content of the Qur'an fully are assessing and understanding the translation of the Qur'an. Allah SWT says in surah Al-A‟raf verse 204 :

“So when the Qur'an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy.” (Q.S Al-A‟raf : 204)

(45)

30

Mosque gives another variaty in learning the Qur‟an. By learning together

in the mosque along with friends which is taught by the teacher will provide motivation for children, as encouraged by other children who learn together (Maududi, 2009: 67). Parental support of children's ability to read the Quran is also an important factor to improve reading ability. This can be done by providing supervision and guidance when children learn to read the Quran at home. Through the attention and guidance to the children, They will feel noticed by their parents. Joining tadarus of

Al-Qur‟an activity during romadhon also can give more time for children to

review and understand Al-Qur‟an.

d. Implementation of Al-Quran Value

Allah SWT said in the letter Yunus verse 57:

(46)

31

“O mankind, there has to come to you instruction from your Lord and healing

for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers.” (Q.S.

Yunus : 57)

The contained value in the Quran is a guidance for humans to face the real life. If someone is able to understand and practice the value in the Quran, She / He would be safe in this world and the Day after (Ash-Shabuuniy, 2009: 26).

5. The Manners of Reading Al-Qur‟an

There are lots of manners reading the Qur'an mentioned by the scholars'. Makhdlori (2008 : 109) mention some manners of reading

Al-Qur‟an. Among others are: a. Sincerely Reading

Someone who reads the Qur'an should intends with a good intention that is worshiping Allah merely to seek His pleasure. Allah says in the Qur'an al-Bayyinah verse 5:

اَمَو

“And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere

to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give

(47)

32

b. In a State of Purity

Among manners of reading the Qur'an is free from the small filth, great filth, and everything unclean because he reads the revelation of God or the word of Allah. As the word of Allah the Al-Waqi'ah: 79-80 as

“None touch it except the purified. (79) [It is] a revelation from the Lord

of the worlds. (80)” (Q.S. Al-Waqi‟ah : 79-80) c. Choose the Proper and Holy Place

If you will read the Qur'an, you should choose a holy place and quiet as mosques, prayer rooms, houses, and others place that is deemed as fit and honorable place to worship or pray. In accordance with the condition of the holy Qur'an and the word of God, The Holy of Holies. The appropriate place strongly supports the appreciation of the meaning of the Qur'an for both readers and listeners

d. Ta‟awwud before Reading Al-Qur‟an

Before reading Al-Qur'an, it is Sunna to read ta'awudz, as the word of Allah. letter an-Nahl verse: 98 :

( ِمي ِجَّرلٱ ِنََٰطْيَّشلٱ َنِم ِهَّللٱِب ْذِعَتْسٱَف َناَءْرُقْلٱ َتْأَرَ ق اَذِإَف

٢١

(48)

33

“So when you recite the Qur'an, [first] seek refuge in Allah from Satan,

the expelled [from His mercy].” (Q.S. An-Nahl : 98)

This is in accordance with the meaning of ta'awwud who seeks refuge in Allah from all the temptations of Satan the accursed. Then after

it, we‟ve to read bassmallah. Then the next step is ablutions to eliminate hadast. If hadast is large, the shower is great and if only a small hadast then simply ablutions. (Makhdlori: 2008: 110)

e. Read Al-Qur'an with Tartil

Reading the Qur'an with tartil is sunnah, by reading slowly and calmly. It is certainly appropriate manner in order to read the meaning contained in the Quran is not damaged or changed meaning. In the Qur'an Allah affirmed in the Al-Muzammil verse 4:

( ًليِتْرَ ت َناَءْرُقْلٱ ِلِّتَرَو ِهْيَلَع ْدِز ْوَأ

٢

)

“Or add to it, and recite the Qur'an with measured recitation.” (Q.S Al -Muzammil : 4)(Makhdlori: 2008: 111)

f. Living and Contemplating the Meaning of Al-Qur'an

Contemplating the meaning of the verses of the Qur'an is to move the heart to understand the words of the Qur'an that he read by his best or

driven by the tongue so it‟s easy to understood and then practiced in the

(49)

34

that we are not referred to the person who is deaf and dumb. (Makhdlori: 2008: 110)

g. Khusu‟

Khusu‟ means humbling your heart and all members of the body to

Allah, so when we read the Qur'an, it would have any impact to the listener. In addition we also have to khusu 'to listen to the recitation of the Qur'an or reading the Qur'an. In this case God asserts in the letter al-Hadid verse 16 :

should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their

hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient.” (Q.S Al -Hadid : 16)

h. Behave According to Al-Qur'an

(50)

35

“Those to whom We have given the Book recite it with its true recital. They [are the ones who] believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it -

it is they who are the losers.” (Q.S. Al-Baqoroh : 121)

B. Spiritual Intelligence

1. The Definition of Spiritual Intelligence

Intelligence has a very broad sense, the Indonesian great dictionary describe intelligent interpreted as the subject, smart (as a noun), or the perfect development of his mind (to think of understanding, etc.). Others say intelligence is the stuff that shows the ability to receive, understand, and use the symbols to be able to resolve the abstract problems (Kurniasih: 2010: 13).

AryGinanjarAgustian in his BookESQ: Emotional Spiritual Quotient,

defines spiritual intelligence as the ability to give spiritual meaning to thoughts, behaviors and activities, as well as the ability of synergizing IQ, EQ and SQ comprehensively (Agustian: 2001: 47)

(51)

36

intelligence to put the behavior and life in the context of a broader meaning and rich, intelligence to judge that the action or the way a person's life is more meaningful than another.

Toto Tasmara defines spiritual intelligence is the ability to listen to his conscience, good or bad and moral sense in the way he put himself in the association (Tasmara: 2003: 49).

From many various opinions, it can be concluded that spiritual intelligence is the ability of a person to solve a variety of meanings, self control, and using his conscience in life and the ability to give meaning the value of religious life in order to be a perfect man and to achieve a good the life in the world and the hereafter.

2. The Characteristic of Spiritual Intelligence

According to Toto Tasmara, he revealed 7 indicators of spiritual intelligence, such as:

a) Feels the existence of God

b) Think and pray

c) Have quality of patience

d) Tend to do the goodness

(52)

37

f) High minded

g) Having a vision

According to Marsha Sinetar (2000), a person with a spiritual intelligence (SQ) has a deep self-awareness, intuition and high power of "selfishness" or "authority", a tendency to experience and "aesthetic" talents.

From the explanation above the author take 5 characteristics of spiritual intelligence that well developed including:

a. Feels the Existence of God

People with spiritual intelligence always feel the existence of God wherever they are. They believe that Allah always watch them out and recorded everything they do. As Allah says in surah Qay verse 16:

ِهْيَلِإ ُبَرْ قَأ ُنَْنََو ُهُسْفَ ن ِهِب ُسِوْسَوُ ت اَم ُمَلْعَ نَو َناَسْنلإا اَنْقَلَخ ْدَقَلَو

ِديِرَوْلا ِلْبَح ْنِم

And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein.

(53)

38

b. High level of Awareness

The characteristics of spiritual intelligence based on Danah Zohar's opinion that people with high-awareness, the will not do unnecessary things caused many problems, and their quality of life is vision and values oriented, these three things can not be separated. If people has a high level of awareness i his life, he will be unwilling to do bad things, such as in obeying of traffic lights, he will always obey the rules, because he is aware the importance of safety riding which is this person categorize as people that has quality of life.

Three characteristics of spiritual intelligence as said by Danah Zohar and Marshall have said are having high level of awareness, unwilling to do unnecessary things, and their quality of is vision and values oriented, those three characteristic identic with characteristic of

spiritual intelligence based on Ary Ginanjar Agustian‟s opinion that is

(54)

39

High level of awareness includes one indicator that is tend to do the goodness, its mean they will not do unnecessary things caused many problem.

c. Humble

People who has spiritual intelligence, they commonly known as humble person. Because they feel all the pleasant are form Allah, they do not regard their self, nobler than others, they will respect others, they

won‟t be arrogant. Allah said in the al-Furqan 65 that:

َنوُلوُقَ ي َنيِذَّلاَو

َناَك اَهَ باَذَع َّنِإ َمَّنَهَج َباَذَع اَّنَع ْفِرْصا اَنَّ بَر

اًماَرَغ

And those who say, "Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering;

.Humble includes one indicator that is have a strongly empathy, this is

beacause people with humble nature, they don‟t regard theirself nobler than

others, they will respect others.

d. Sincere

(55)

40

with and pass the pain (temptation), people will be able to face all the pain, if they tawakkal toward all the provisions of God, then sincerely accept it

Sincere includes one indicator that is high minded, people will have the ability to deal with and pass the pain and alsoave tawakal nature.

e. Patient

Patient is the ability to control their self, avoid the desire toward the negative things. Patient means achieving a hope to reach life goals so its makes people stronger and never desperate to face the problems from Allah.

Patient includes two indicators, they are have quality of patience and having a vision, this is beacuse with patient, people will have te ability to control theirself and avoid the desire toward the negative things.

(56)

41

Heart education as the center of spiritual intelligence is the real education. If education nowadays emphasizes more on the cognitive aspects, heart education precisely raise the aspects of psychomotor quality and spiritual awareness related to daily activities.

Spiritual intelligence guides us to educate our hearts to be better. The method depends on our self. First, if we define ourselves as the part of religion, then spiritual intelligence takes a vertical method: how spiritual intelligence can educate our hearts to be more intimacy for the worship of the God. If in Islam affirmed in the Qur'an, "known, by remembering the God, your hearts become more calm". So remembering of Allah with the certain pronunciations is a method of spiritual intelligence to educate the heart to be calm and peaceful. Second, the implications horizontally: spiritual intelligence educates our hearts into good manners and civilized morals.

(57)

42 name of his Lord and prays.

To improve spiritual intelligence, it can be pursued by practicing what religious must be kept it in their life such as six pillars of faith ( faith to God, faith to the Angels, faith to the Prophets, faith to the scriptures, faith to the Last Day, faith in Destiny), and five pillars of Islam (shahadah, prayers, zakat, fasting during Ramadan, and Hajj.

3. The Obstruction in Developing the Spiritual Intelligent

According to Danah Zohar and Ian Marshall (2000 : 46) The development of spiritual intelligent for the children is influenced by many factors. However, from many researches it can be concluded some of the important factors that influence the spiritual intelligent as follow:

a. Family‟s Environment

(58)

43

A harmonious family will be the best place for the children to develop the spiritual intelligent, but un-harmonious family will obstruct the development of the spiritual intelligent for children. According to Rutter (1980), un-harmonious family will obstruct the children‟s development in spiritual intelligent because of some condition such like:

1) Death of one of the parents will influence the childrens‟ spiritual intelligent

2) Divorce

3) Conflicted relationship of the parents

4) High tension of the home‟s situation and distress

5) Activity of parents that makes parents busy on the outside and often

stay in home becomes one of the factors that obstructs the children‟s

spiritual intelligent b. Social Environment

(59)

44

in the environment, they are always seeing about the people who are

gambling, pornography or making drunk‟s party and many other negative

activities, for sure it will influence the development of the children‟s personality. Because of the learning process happened in the social environment is occurred by imitating process, if the children offtenly see the negative things in the environment, it will be absorbed in the

children‟s self. As the result, the children will tend to try the similar thing.

c. Group of Peer and Drugs

There are many teenagers who are stumbled on to the drugs abuse happened because of influence of the peer. Because of the reason of loyallity of a friendship and solidarity or others, the teenagers then try to use the drugs. In the last, from the trying, then they will be addicted and will be more stumbled on to the drugs abuse that destroys their future.

Addicted can be aimed on to drugs, alcohol, sex and gamble. Addicted is caused by the motivation that forces someone outside of their conscious control to comply a call that is coming outside of their thinking. Addicted seems like an archetype but enslave to an archetype that actually is out of the pole.

(60)

45

(80%) are gained from the peer. While the negative impacts of the drugs abuse are 96% of achievement in the school is decreasing, 93% of the relation of the family is degraded, 65,3% of increasing the fight and violence, 53% causing the traffic crash. Another result shows that teenagers with anti-social personality (psychopathic) having 19,9 times risk for being a drug abuser. Teenagers with depression having 18,8 times for being a consumer of drugs. Teenagers with disturbance of anxiety having 13,3 times of risk for being drug abuser. Also the teenagers with the un-harmonious family having 7,9 times of risk for being a drugs abuser.

d. Pornography

Today, a pornographic plague in indonesia has been damaging. In every second, children can have and buy a porn magazine, video or porn card that easily sold in the street vendors and busy places. Moreover, in every VCD rental and also comic serving and selling this pornographic product. It is very regretted that they are not separating the age for their customer to rent

these porns‟ products. Some of criminal cases of molesting is undertaken by teenagers because of they watched the porn scenes on the VCD.

(61)

46

when they are influenced by the pornography so that children can easily stumbled in to bad activity because of the demand of the desire (Safaria, 2007: 58). This is also for the adult. Because of pornography can make a person to abuse the woman or for more dangerous is violating the women.

4. Seven Practical Steps to Get better SQ

According to Danah Zohar and Ian Marshall (2000 : 231), there are seven steps to make SQ better :

a. Realize where I am now

b. Feeling strongly that I want to change

c. Contemplating what my deepest motivation is d. Finding and overcoming obstacles

e. Explore many possibilities to move forward f. Setting my heart on a path

g. Stay aware that there are many paths

(62)

47

Step 2: If your reflection encourages you to feel that your life, behavior, relationships, or work can be better, you must want to change, promise to change. This will require you to think honestly about what you have to bear for the change in the form of energy and sacrifice.

Step 3: A deeper level of reflection is now required. You have to know yourself, your center, your deepest motivation. If you die next week, what do you want to say about what you have accomplished or contributed in life? if you are given another year, what do you want to do with that time.

Step 4: What are the obstacles that hinder your path? What prevents you from living outside your center before? anger? greed? Guilty feeling? Fear ? just laziness? Stupidity? now make a list of things that hinder you, and develop an understanding of how you can get rid of these obstacles. perhaps by doing simple things like awareness or determination. Or it takes a long process and mentor like a therapist, friend, or spiritual advisor. This step is often overlooked, but is very important, and requires constant attention.

(63)

48

Step 6: Now you have to set your heart on one path in life and try to get to the center while you step on that path. Again, meditate daily on whether you are doing your best for yourself and others, whether you have benefited as much as you can from every situation, whether you are satisfied or at peace with the present situation and whether there is meaning to you here.

59 CHAPTER IV

DATA ANALYSIS

A. Preface Analysis

To know how far the intensity of reading Al-Qur'an to spiritual intelligence, it can be obtained by statistical analysis. The data analysis using statistical correlation product moment analysis technique with the formula:

( (

√{ ( { (

(Arikunto, 2006:274)

Explanation:

rxy : correlation coefficient

x : sum variabel x

y : sum variabel y

: sum the score results of X with Y scores are paired

: sum x quadratic

y² : sum y quadratic

(75)

60

Then we prepare the table reading intensity value of Al-Qur'an, student association and work table to find correlation coefficient between variable intensity of reading Al-Qur'an and development of spiritual intelligence.

1. Data Analysis of the Intensity of Reading Al-Qur'an

The reading intensity data of Al-Qur'an was obtained from the questionnaire which consisted of 10 questions, each question provided 3 option answers with the following weighting score:

a. Score 3 for option A, b. Score 2 for option B, c. Score 1 for option C.

(78)

63

To determine the width of the interval, the writer uses the formula:

I = R+1 K Explanation: I = Interval

R = Range (the highest value limit minus the lowest value limit) K = Sum of Class

For the intensity of reading the Qur'an with the number of 10 items known the highest value 27 and the lowest 19, After looking the existing data, it can be incorporated into the formula:

I = R K

i =(

i =

The Interval of Student’s Intensity of Reading Al-Qur’an

Interval Score Amount of Student Nomination 25 – 27 8 A (High) 22 – 24 8 B (Fair) 19 – 21 10 C (Low)

Thus it can be seen that:

a. For the intensity of reading the Qur'an in the High category score between 25 - 27 as many as 8 students

b. For the intensity of reading the Qur'an in the Fair category score between 23 - 24 as many as 8 students
