1 CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTON
This chapter presents such topics as: background of the study, statement of the
problem, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and
definition of key terms. Each section is presented as follows.
1.1 Background of the Study
Basically, literature is a part of our life. We were taught literature indirectly
when we were kids. We remembered when we were child there were so many stories
that attract us or motivate us based on the message from the story. For example the
story of “Malin Kundang” that motivate us to obey to the parents, the story of “Si
Kancil” made us in order not to steal everything and always behave good. The
examples above are only part of many of stories that influences us to do better.
Literature can influence and motivate us to be a good person. Many people can
change their behavior, their personality after seeing the sense of literature.
Concerning with that explanation it can be stated that literature means a part
of art using beautiful language. Literature can include in the form of drama, novel,
poetry, short story, and film or movie. Meanwhile, film is one of kinds of literary
work besides drama, poetry and short story. In this case, film is discussed. Film has
the same similarity with the drama, the different is film is not performing in the stage,
but basically film has the same characteristic with drama. This kind of literary work

pleases us by imitating life, or more precisely, by displaying movie writer idea
through its director’s touch and sense of film will make the audiences fall deeply to
the film story and hopefully will get the good the message from the film that can be
applied in their life. Film also gives a pleasure and enjoyment, we can enjoy watch
film in the movie theater or just stay at home and watch through CD player or laptop,
and we can enjoy the pleasure easily.
In this case, the writer of this thesis chooses the film under the title “The
Legend of the Guardians the Owls of Ga’hoole” to be discussed. This film is
published at 2010 by Warner Bross, directed by Zack Snyder, and the story is written
by John Orloff, Emil Stern, Kathryn Lasky. This film is combination of ga”hoole
series novel. The film is suitable for everyone including children, because this is film
is produced with the very good 3d animation. The children will reach the moral value
easily through the animation film. The animation is arranged well, so the message
from the film can reach well by the viewers including children. The parents can
accompany their children while explain the moral value there. It is better than
watching adult movie that containing many violence actions. The moral value in this
film will give advantage in term of character building to the children, and it will
influence their behavior in the society and school. In this thesis, the writer specifies
the character named Kludd with his betrayal in this film.
There are some reasons why Kludd’s betrayal in The Legend of the Guardians
the Owls of Ga’hoole Film is interesting to be investigated. First, this film tells many

whereas his family loves him so much. Second, betrayal commonly happens in the
real life, furthermore the readers whom are interested in literature can take moral
value. It is right that people will do anything to fulfill their desire; it does not only
happen in the film, but also in the real life. They do it in many ways and they do not
care whether they do the wrong way. They want to get it even with sacrifice or betray
toward their own family. Seeing this phenomenon, the thesis is intended to analyze
the betrayal done by Kludd in the Legend of the Guardians the Owls of Ga’hoole
film.
Literature is part of our life. All people have sense of literature. By reading
the literary work it will influence the moral value of people to be better. Betrayal is
part of human sense of life, sometimes betrayal happen to fulfill certain purpose. The
previous research conducted by Wijayanti (2004) entitles A Study On Smeagol’s
Betrayal in John Ronald Reuel Tolkien’s Novel “The Two Towers”. In this research
found several points of betrayal. Smeagol’s betrayal was kind of betrayal of self
because Smeagol joined disrespectfull relationship. The Smeagol’s betray also
supported by excessive ambition, greed, lust, or passion. The next point found in this
research is about the karma. Smeagol accepted karma through his behavior.
Another research conducted by Hertiningsih (2007) entitles An Analysis of
Franki’s Betrayal in Nomi Berger’s Novel “The Best of Friends”. In this research
found the reason why betrayal happened in this novel. First, it was excessive

because he thinks that betrayal is necessary to do in order to achieve a greater good.
The last reason was because they like to prove how smart they are.
Based on the previous research above we know that literature is very
interesting to be studied. The two researches above used Novel as the subject to be
analyzed; in this thesis the writer will use different subject, a film as a subject. Novel
can be analyzed through the paragraphs or sentences. In film, the case can be
elaborated more not only through the dialogue or sentence but also through the face
expression. In this case the writer chooses the 3d animation film. Hopefully by use
this kind of film the moral value can be imitated by adult, teenager, and children.
1.2 Statement of the Problems
Based on the description above, the writer wants to dig out the betrayal in this
film. So, the writer formulates the problems as follows:
a. Why does Kludd betray to his family and guardian in The Legend of the
Guardians the Owls of Ga’hoole film?
b. What are the actions of Kludd’s betrayal in The Legend of the Guardians the

1.3 Purpose of the Study
This study is intended to answer the research problem. Thus, the purposes of
this study are:
a. To describe the reason of Kludd’s betrayal in The Legend of the Guardians
the Owls of Ga’hoole film.
b. To describe the action of Kludd’s betrayal in The Legend of the Guardians the
Owls of Ga’hoole film.
1.4 Significance of the Study
The result of this study may give some contributions. Firstly; it is expected
that the result of the study give the readers some knowledge about struggles in
betrayal of Kludd in The Legend of the Guardians the Owls of Ga’hoole film.
Secondly, it is aimed to motivate the readers especially students of English
department at Muhammadiyah Malang university to love literature, especially film
and to give them motivation to broaden their knowledge about literature. Finally this
study is to give alternative references to the students who are interested in analyzing
film.
1.5 Scope and Limitation
This study is focused on the film “The Legend of the Guardians the Owls of
Ga’hoole”. There are many topics that can be analyzed in this film, but in this study,
the writer only focuses on “betrayal”., for the limitation of study, the writer tries to

1.6Definition of Key Terms
To clarify the term used in study the writer gives the definition of key terms, it
is intended to avoid misunderstanding of the key terms. The key terms that are used
to be defining in this study are as follows:
Analysis: is the process of breaking a complex topic or substance into smaller
parts to gain a better understanding of it. (www.wikippedia.com).
Film: is a group of images that can move. It is created by recording all the
photographic images with camera, or by creating images using animation techniques
and visual effect. (www.wikippedia.com)
Betrayal: is the breaking of trust or confidence that produces moral and
psychological conflict within a relationship among individuals, between
organizations or between individuals and organizations (www.wikipedia.com)
