1 CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter discusses some topics related to the background of the study, the statement of problems, the purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and definition of the key term. All of them are included on the chapter one in which each section is described as follows:

1.1Background of the Study

Talking about literature, it cannot be separated from human’s expression. It can be said that literature is a true picture or replication of human’s life where the human being looked for the way how to express their feeling through literature. Long states that “literature is the expression of life in the word of thoughts and beauty. It is the written record of man’s thoughts, emotions, aspirations; it is the story, and the only history, of the human soul” (2004: 8). He describes that by literature the human being could express their feelings.

Literature covers literary works in the form of drama, novel, poetry, short story, and film or movie. Meanwhile, novel is one of kinds of literary work besides drama, poetry and /or movie. According to Kennedy, novel is a book length story in prose, whose author tries to create the sense that while we need, we experience actual life (1983: 180)

recognized through several aspects; they are: events of human life such as life problems, struggles and conflicts in which those events commonly cover love, sacrifice, humanity and sorrow.

In this study, the novel under the title What She doesn’t Know has been chosen to be discussed. This novel was published on September 12, 2006 by Zebra; and the story is written by Beverly Marie Beaver or better known as Beverly Barton. This novel tells the way the main character faces suffering in her life in order to get her prosperity back. Jolie Royale Desmond as a main character has become witness for almost 20 years since the brutal crime that left her mother, her aunt, and her aunt's lover dead, and Jolie critically wounded. She thinks that the murderer has committed suicide, and the case was closed, although rumors of the murderer's true identity abounded. Those feelings turn to dread when the case is reopened--and it becomes clear the killer is still on the loose. There are so many obstacles faced by the main character in order to reveal the true identity of the murderer and get her home “Belle rose” back.

The previous research was conducted by Mawardi (2014) entitling “A Study On Chris Gardner’s suffering in the pursuit of happiness” film by Gabriele Muchino.

This research found several points of suffering. Chris was suffering because he had been left by Linda for going to New York, Chris was disappointed because he could not pay the motel, and the next point of suffer found in this research is about when Chris was hit by a car.

Another research was conducted by Anisah (2013) entitling A Study on Marry Boleyn’s suffering in Phillipia Gregory’s movie “The Other Boleyn Girl”. This

research found the reason why Marry Boleyn faces suffering. First, Marry is being forced by family to be a mistress of king Hanry. Second, Marry is disappointed because of her sister’s betrayal. Third, Marry is being ignored by the king, expelled

from the court, and being sad because of her family death.

Based on the previous research above we know that literature is very interesting to be studied. The two researchers above used Film as the subject to be analyzed; in this thesis the writer uses different subject, a Novel as a subject. Novel can be analyzed through the paragraph or sentences. Furthermore, by analyzing novel, the proof will be more concrete.

The Advisor I, The Writer,

Dra. Thathit Manon A, M.Hum Candra Irawan AN ANALYSIS ON MAIN CHARACTER’S SUFFERING IN WHAT SHE

DOESN’T KNOW NOVEL BY BEVERLY BARTON Abstract

Literature cannot be separated from human’s expression. It can be said that literature is a true picture or replication of human’s life where the human being look for the way how to express their feeling through literature. By reading literary works especially novel, the readers can take lessons and knowledge for their lives. This study discussed one of Beverly Barton’s novels What She Doesn’t Know. It tells about the story of Jolie Royal Desmond who tried to reveal the true identity of the murderer who killed her mother and aunt twenty years ago in Belle Rose. In order to reveal the murderer, Jolie experienced suffering. Therefore, the writer is interested in analyzing suffering in this novel.

The design of this study was descriptive qualitative because the data were analysed by narrated description and interpretation about the story in the novel. In collecting the data, the writer analysed and interpreted the novel related to the statement of problems which were 1) the kinds of Jolie’s suffering, 2) the cause of Jolie’s suffering, and 3) the effect of Jolie’s suffering. Moreover, objective approach was used in this study because the writer regarded this approach focuses only on the content of the novel and free from the author’s background.

The result of this study showed that Jolie suffered from mental and physical suffering. Her mental sufferings were: 1) Jolie was difficult to interact, 2) Jolie was feeling anxious, 3) Jolie was afraid to see stairs, and 4) Jolie was frustrated. Her physical sufferings were: 1) Jolie was stinging on her hip and shoulder, 2) potential harmful done by Parry toward Jolie, and 3) Jolie was bleeding. Those symptoms appeared due to several causes. The causes of her mental suffering were: 1) She was still in trauma, 2) She was still haunted by the memory of Ginny Pounders who died tragically, 3) She always saw the dead body of her aunt, and 4) She was desperate to find Belle Rose files. Then, the causes of her physical suffering were; 1) She had been shot three times, 2) Parry thought that Jolie was Lisette, and 3) She was showered by bullets by an unidentified gunman. The last is the effect of Jolie’s suffering. The effects of her mental suffering were: 1) Jolie felt lonely, 2) Jolie could not sleep well, 3) Jolie was unable to leave her room alone, and 4) Jolie felt sore on her neck, shoulders, and back. Furthermore, the effects of her physical suffering were: 1) Jolie was unconscious and hospitalized, 2) Jolie could not breathe and was in panic, and 3) Jolie was shocked. Finally, this study highlighted on Jolie’s suffering issue illustrated in the novel and become the main issue to be discussed in further deeper investigations.
