Scholarships for pursuing University education in India
The Government of India scholarships are provided by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) through its General Cultural Scholarships Scheme (GCSS) for the year 201112.
The scholarships are offered to meritorious Indonesian students to undertake higher studies in India under undergraduate (51), postgraduate (52) and Ph.D. (53). Students can opt for any course in the fields of arts, performing arts, architecture, literature, commerce and science; degree courses in engineering and agriculture; and doctoral and postdoctoral courses in various disciplines. Government of India will provide living allowance, contingent grant, accommodation charges, tuition fee and other benefits, including expenses on medical treatment and study tour to the students selected for the scholarship. However, the cost of air passage to India and back for all students and expenses on laboratory chemicals and related incidentals for science stream students would have to be borne by them or by their sponsors. Scholarships are not provided for medicine (MBBS), dentistry (BDS), nursing & other courses related to medicine.
Applications for the 201112 academic year are now being accepted in the Embassy of India in Jakarta. Last date for acceptance of applications is 22 January 2011.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION BROCHURE
To be read in conjunction with the Scholarship Application Forms
&Guidelines
The ICCR scholarships provide opportunities for Indonesian students to study at the higher educational institutions in India.
Under its General Cultural Scholarship Scheme (GCSS), ICCR awards, through the Embassy of India in Jakarta, twenty (20) scholarships to meritorious students from Indonesia for studying in Universities and Colleges in India.
The scholarships are for fulltime study in one of the course of study at one of the participating Universities and other Institutions of Higher Learning listed in the Application form.
Eligibility criteria are set out on page2 of this Brochure.
Applications from all students, who fulfill the eligibility criteria and who possess basic working knowledge of the English language, are invited.
Scholarships are for study at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including Master and Doctoral programmes. Students applying for the award of scholarship must pass the English Proficiency Test to be conducted at the Embassy of India in Jakarta.

CHOOSING A COURSE OF STUDY
In the Application Form, the students are required to indicate at least three courses, in the order of preference, which they would like to pursue in Indian educational institutions.
Students are also required to indicate at least three Universities/Institution of Higher Learning, in the order of preference, at which they would like to study.
A list of participating Universities (total 189) is included at Appendix5 to the Scholarship Application Form.
When considering a course, students must ensure that they possess requisite qualifications for the course which they choose to study.
Students must also ensure that the chosen course of study is a structured course of study at the University of their preference.
For selecting the course of study or the University, students may refer to the 'Universities Handbook of India' available at the Embassy of India in Jakarta or browse the official website of the concerned University.
Students may also apprize themselves of the requirements expected to be fulfilled by the Foreign Students at the concerned University.
Doctoral and Postgraduate (including Masters) applicants should generally choose an area consistent with previous studies they have completed.
It may be noted that Indian Universities/educational institutions are autonomous and independent and hence have their own eligibility criteria. Forwarding of applications is thus not a guarantee of admission. Final acceptance is up to the University concerned. A scholarship is awarded only when admission is confirmed by the concerned UniversitylICCR.
NOTE ON RESTRICTIONS ON ICCR SCHOLARSHIPS:

WHO CAN APPLY?
To be eligible to apply for ICCR scholarship, you must:
• be an Indonesian national;
• be usually and currently resident in Indonesia;
• not have permanent resident status for any other country;
• be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of commencement of scholarship in India; • not currently hold a scholarship from ICCR under GC55;
• not availed of a scholarship from ICCR under GCSS;
• priority will be given to candidates who have not had scholarships and have not been awarded scholarship previously to study in India;
• be applying to commence a new course of study at a level higher than your current qualification;
• be able to take up the scholarship in the year in which it is offered (2011); and
• for civil servants, be endorsed by your sponsoring organization, i.e. Ministry, Department, statutory authority, agency.
Specifically:
• all applicants must have very good English language skills;
• to verify the English language competency, an English Proficiency Test will be conducted at the Embassy of India in Jakarta on Friday, 4 February 2011;
• only those candidates whose Application Forms and Documents have been found to be in order will be eligible for appearing in the English Proficiency Test;
• all applicants for M.Phil, Doctorate (Ph.D), Postdoctorate Research, Casual Research or Architecture would need to submit a synopsis of the proposed area of research;
• applicants for postgraduate study must already hold a recognized undergraduate degree (51) with good academic record;
• applicants for doctorate (Ph.D) must already hold a recognized Master's degree (52) with good academic record;
• applicants for studying performing arts would need to submit video/audio cassettes of their recorded performances.
In addition, all applicants must:
• be committed to return to Indonesia upon finishing their course of study

All candidates called for English Proficiency Test will also be interviewed on the same day by an interview team which will assess the candidates' academic ability, clarify of study goals, and cultural adaptability and the relevant of their proposed study. Interviews will be undertaken in English.
A shortlist of thirty (30) candidates who will qualify the English Proficiency Test and the personal interview will be forwarded to ICCR for consideration of award of scholcrship. However, only 20 scholarships will be finally awarded.
Selection Criteria:
Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of:
1. Academic merit;
2. English language proficiency; and, 3. Likelihood of successful study abroad.
The final selection is objective and meritbased.

NOTIFICATION OF THE AWARD OF SCHOLARSHIP
Students who are awarded scholarships will be notified through a formal mail as soon as their admissions are confirmed in a University in India.
Any request for change in course of study or University, once admission of a scholar is confirmed and the scholar has arrived to ,join the course, would not be entertained.
Predeparture and Visa Application
Immediately upon being advised of award of scholarship, the concerned student must complete his travel document (passport) and also make booking for travel to India.
He should thereafter approach the Education Wing of the Embassy of India in Jakarta, which will assist successful candidates with application for visa. Visa will be provided on 'gratis' basis for the entire duration of the course.
All students admitted to M.Phil. and higher course (Ph.D. or postdoctoral) would require 'Research Visa' instead of 'Student Visa'. The concerned students may ascertain the requirements and procedure for making applications for the Research Visa. The processing time for 'Research Visa' is may take up to one month, provided documentation has been completed satisfactorily.
Before leaving for India, all awardees will be fully briefed about the living conditions in India, on the details of scholarships, the type and duration of the course to which he/she is admitted course.

Scholarship Terms and Conditions
The ICCRscholarships awarded under GCSS are fullyfunded scholarships.
However, the international airfare from Indonesia to the place of study in India and back has to be borne by the students themselves.
In case of scholars pursuing science courses, the expenditure on laboratory chemicals and other related incidental charges are also to be borne by the scholars themselves.
Student visa, valid for the entire duration of the study, would be provided on 'gratis' basis.

Medical Benefits
Students/scholars are expected to seek treatment at the medical centre/dispensary attached to the UniversitylInstitute where they are enrolledor in the nearest Government Hospital Bills on medical treatment are settled by the Councilas per rules.
Study Tours ICCR meets the expenditure on train/bus fares and daily allowance.
FAMILY ENTRY:
Families must meet the Government of India immigration requirements.
Scholarship awardees may bring their immediate families (spouse and children) to India at their own cost, after Qwardees have joined their respective course of studies and settled into their formal academic courses. Government of India does not provide any financial or other support for the dependents of the students. Students must contact the Embassy of India in .Jakarta to ascertain the current requirements for family entry/visit to India.
Important Note:
Students awarded the scholarship must give an undertaking to complete their course of study in India. In case, any student returns prematurely to Indonesia without completing his/her course of study, the student would be liable to reimburse all expenses incurred on tuition fee, stipend, HRA etc. to IeeR.

INSTRUCTIONS TO APPUCANTS
1) Five complete sets of application forms are to be submitted to the Indian Mission. 2) Candidate should dearly mention the course and University to which he/she is seeking admission. The applicants are advised to go through the "University Handbook" available with our Mission before giving these details.
ICeR would not be able to entertain a subsequent change in course of study or University once admission of a scholar is confirmed and the scholar has arrived to join the course.
3) Certified copies of all documents should be accompanied with English translations. A syllabus of the last qualifying examination should be enclosed with the application.

Student must carry a proper visa. Scholars for structured undergraduate and postgraduate courses should carry full term "Student Visas" while for Ph. D. students "Research Visas" for a specific period of 45 years is required. Students should ensure that they get the correct visa from the Indian Embassy/High Commission. Govt. of India gUidelines stipulate that if a scholar arrives without proper visa and his actual admission at the University/lnstitute does not materialize, he/she will be deported to his/her country.In the case of students who require Research Visas, an additional application
for the Research Visa has to be filled and submitted in six copies alongwith six photographs & synopsis. Applicants may note that clearance of Research Visa can take as long as six to eight months.

Important: Students may kindly note that in any future corresspondence with ICCR. the name at the country, scholarship scheme and year of joining must be mentioned.
10) Before departing for India the scholars should seek a full briefing from the Indian Diplomatic Mission in their country about living conditions in India/the details of scholarship/the type and duration of the course to which he/she is admitted. Scholars should inform the Indian Embassy/Iligh Commission of their travel schedule well in advance so that ICCR can make reception and other arrangements for them. 11) Hostel accommodation is not guaranteed and is an exception rather than an assured
facility. The accommodation allowance that ICeR gives. allows 2 to 3 students to "chum up", and share a small flat.
12) Scholars are advised to carry some money to meet some incidental expenditure on arrival.
13) All intending candidates should in their own interest obtain a certificate that they are free from AIDS prior to their departure for India. Even in India, the applicant would have to go for AIDS test before the admission is finally given to overseas scholars. In case any of the nominees is found to be HIV positive in India the scholar will be repatriated immediately and the Council would not bear any expenses on this account. 14) The scholars who are awarded scholarships should bring with them all documents relating to their qualifications in orginal for verification by the respective college/ university at the time of admissions.
15) This application form contains a 'tearout' sheet at Appendi.x7 titled "Joining Report of the Scholar". This form should not
be
submitted alongwith the main application. Instead. the ·Joining Report' form should be removed and submitted toleeR
by the scholar in the event the scholar has been granted scholarshipand only after the scholar has joined an educational institute in India.
