CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of Study
In the learning process, there are four major skills of language such as reading, listening, speaking and writing. They are introduced to the students to reach the goal of language learning. Parikbath and Wesche (1990:1) state good language learners are considered to be good readers and good readers have to be able to deduce or understand the content of text.
As one of language skills, reading contributes to the success of language learning together with the other skills. Reading enables students to find out information from an array of text, ranging from textbooks, newspapers, magazine, advertisements, brochures, etc. Ramelan (1990: i) states that:
“Reading plays very important part in our life. Through reading we can explore the world, countries that never been visited before, and minds or idea of great people in the past, all of which enrich our experience and knowledge and broaden our horizon.”
in transferring information is reading. If we comprehend the passage, we can get information as many possible. Ramelan (1990: 1) said that reading ability is in fact the key to domain all sciences.
Reading is an important aspect in learning language. Learning without reading is meaningless. More reading is more knowledge. By reading, we can develop our knowledge. In our study, lecturer or teacher always gives us suggestion to read more references in order to increase our reading mastery. It proves that we do not only depend on the teachers‟ explanation but also should read more references to explore the material more deeply.
The teacher often neglects using an appropriate teaching method to increase the students‟ reading skill; they only teach reading without creating a good situation to make students enjoy reading something. We realize that it is difficult to make some students studying a reading lesson. If the teacher gives an enjoyable experience such as giving activities in group, students will associate and feel interested in reading. By having interest they will concentrate well. It will lead them to better comprehension.
Based on the observation and interview that writer did at MAN 1 Banjarnegara at the tenth grade students especially in class X 2, it was known that the students ability in their reading competence was still low and most of the students did not know the content of text easily and the students felt difficult to answer the questions or exercise from the teacher because they did not understand the content of the text after they have read.
certain method to help the students in solving their reading problems. The technique that will be used is Cooperative Learning type Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS). It means that the students will be more active in learning because each student in group has responsibility and the learning is more varieties. Thus students feel enjoy and do not feel bored anymore.
Cooperative learning type TSTS is the instructional use of small groups so that students work together to maximize their own and each other‟s learning; it is more than a group work, the teacher ask students to make a group consist of four or five members, each member of a team share idea, work together and responsible to the success of their team. Each member of a team is responsible not only for learning what is taught but also for helping teammates learn. After they discuss, their teammates move in other group and share their idea.
B. Reason for Choosing the Topic
There are some reasons, the writer choosing the topic:
1. Based on the observation, the students did not know the content of text easily and the students felt difficult to answer the questions or exercise from the teacher, as a result their reading competence was low.
2. The English teacher had never used an appropriate technique in teaching
C. Problems of the Research
Based on the background of the research and the reasons for choosing the topic, the problem of this research is stated by a question “Can Two Stay
Two Stray improves the students‟ reading comprehension?”
D. The Aims of the Research
The aim of this research is to improve the students‟ reading comprehension using Two Stay Two Stray technique.
E. The Scope of the Research
Based on the pre-observation result, the researcher found that the students felt difficult to understand a narrative text, so the researcher will use TSTS technique to solve the problems. In this study, the text type which will be discussed is Narrative Text and use TSTS technique. The subject of the study is the tenth grade of MAN 1 Banjarnegara in academic year 2013/2014. F. Clarification of Terms
The title of this research is “Improving Student‟s Reading
Comprehension through Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) technique. (A Classroom Action Research at Tenth Grade Students of MAN 1 Banjarnegara in Academic Year 2013/2014).”
To understand the items more clearly, the terms of the study are clarified as follows:
1. Improve
state or quality (Glorier, 1981:662). 2. Reading Comprehension
Reading
Reading comes from the word “read” which means to look and undersand
the meaning of written or printed words or symbols (Oxford, 2000:1096). Comprehension
Comprehension is the power of understanding (Hornby, 1995:235)
Comprehension refers to the act of comprehending, including an embracing and capacity of the main to understand and to receive the ideas. 3. Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS)
Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) is one of learning models that gives groups of students chance to divide both the result and information about the material that has been discussed to other groups (Lie, 2010:61)
4. Technique
Technique is a particular way of doing something, especially one in which you have to learn special skills (Oxford, 2000:1388).
5. Narrative text
Narrative means story or tale, orderly account events: (composition that consists of story-telling) (Hornby, 1987:961)
G. Contribution of Research
Hopefully, the result of this study has contribution to English teacher, school, other researcher, and to reader.
1. To English Teacher
The result of this study will be very useful for English teacher to improve their teaching competence, also expand the teacher‟s perception in teaching learning process.
2. To School
The result of this study will be very useful for school. By having the good result in English, the school can improve its quality and facilitate the teachers with various techniques in teaching English.
3. To Other Researcher
The researcher hopes that the result of the research can improve and develop the quality teaching and learning especially in teaching reading.
4. To Reader
