Silkw orm s live for only t w o or t hree days aft er laying eggs. About 36,000 t o 50,000 eggs are laid, and t hese are carefully st ored at t he silkw orm farm unt il t hey are ready t o hat ch. The eggs hat ch int o cat erpillars, w hich feed on m ulberry leaves. Soon, t he cat erpillars are ready t o spin t heir cocoons. Not all cat erpillars can spin silk cocoons. Only t he cat erpillars of silkw orm m ot h know n as ‘Bom byx m ori’ can do such spinning.
This cat erpillar has special glands secret e liquid silk through it s low er lip. The liquid produced lat er hardens t o form fine st rands. The cat erpillar makes it cocoons using t hese st rands. The t reads on t he out side of t he cocoons are rough, w hile t hose inside are soft and sm oot h.
Som e fully-spun cocoons are heat ed. This kills t he pupa inside. The cocoons are t hen put int o hot w at er t o loosen t he fine t hreads. Finally, t hese t hreads are r eeled off t he cocoons.
The lengt h of unbroken t hread produced by a single cocoon m easures about one and a half kilomet ers. Being t w ist ed t oget her several of t hese t hreads m ake single w oven m at erials.
