because English is an international language. Communication is primary thing in our daily life. Human being is not life without communicate with another. English language makes relation between one country and another country for business, culture, tourism and other interest.

Teaching English in Indonesia focused on teaching student’s communicative competence. Students usually have the problem communication both spoken and written. There are four skills of English language. The skills are writing, reading, speaking and listening.

In Indonesia, English language gets a good position in national education. The position of language is as a national exam. Nowadays, in junior high school genre based approach is needed teaching learning process. Genre is a type of functional text. Genre those are usually taught at school descriptive, recount, report, narrative, procedure, argumentative, spoof, news item, and other. The student gets difficulties in writing narrative text. So the student needs to use appropriate method in teaching writing, in order to product a good writing.

Writing is once important skills in English learning. Writing is complex. Writing is the act of graphics symbol. One of the reasons that more people can explain how is different performing by other person. According to Leki, 1996:172 (in Fauziati, 2010:46) in the product-oriented type of teaching writing the main purpose of the learners writing activity are catch grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Writing narrative text tells about vicarious experience and use past tense. Narrative text consists of orientation, complication, and resolution. Orientation is sets the scene and introduces the participant. Typically use what, where, when and who. Complication tells about a crisis and problem arises. The ending is resolution. It tells about the crisis is resolved for better or worse. Narrative text use word like one upon a time, then, and the next morning.

In narrative text, reading is important for the students to get many ideas. Before the student get idea the student must be write the point of narrative text, but the second year students still make mistake when write the narrative text, especially for the second year of SMP N 1 Toroh.

The researcher chooses SMP N 1 Toroh in located at Proyudo Street No. 1 Ds. Boloh Toroh, Grobogan Regency, and Central Java. The school was built in 1963. The status of accreditation of SMP N 1 Toroh is A. The researcher chose SMP N 1 Toroh because it as one of state junior high school in my town. English language student in SMP 1 Toroh is good but many students have medium or low capability in writing text. The grades of medium and low capability are 85 and 65. Sometimes they are confused with generic structure and lexicogrammatical features.

The last reason why the researcher chose SMP N 1 Toroh because in the school have low vocabulary and the student lazy to read.

The researcher can show interview with the teacher.

The teacher “The student have medium and low capability because the student lazy to read and don’t have many vocabulary”.

The student in SMP N 1 Toroh has little enthusiasm for a writing task. Every time the students have writing task, they fell difficult to do.

The researcher chose writing skill because writing is the first part in the peoples’ life. Writing is necessary to be developed for students. It is difficult for the student to be master in writing skill.

There are some texts for junior high school such as descriptive, narrative, exposition, argumentative, etc. One of them is narrative text there is tells about event will effect of characteristic. The purpose of the narrative text type is the narrator tells the audience who is in the story, when it is happening, where is in happening, and what is going on. It has essential function related to the event can be told in chronological order.

The researchers collaborate with the teacher in this study. The step of collect data has two main stages: the researcher interview with the student and the teacher and documentation. Based on the phenomenon above, the writer makes research entitled “A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY ON THESTUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING NARRATIVE TEXT AT THE SECOND YEAR OF SMP N 1 TOROH IN 2016/2017 ACADEMIC YEAR”.

B. Problem Statement

Based on the background of the study, the problems that are going to be discussed in this research as follows:

1. How is the students’ ability in writing narrative text at the second year of SMP N 1 Toroh 2016/2017 academic year?

2. What are the problems faced by the students in writing narrative text at the second year of SMP N 1 Toroh 2016/2017 academic year?

3. What are the causes of the problems faced by the students in writing narrative text at the second year of SMP N 1 Toroh 2016/2017 academic year?

C. Objective of the Study The study aims to:

2. Identify the problems faced by the student writing narrative text at the second year of SMP N 1 Toroh 2016/2017 Academic year.

3. Describe the causes of the problems faced by the student’s in writing narrative text at the second year of SMP N 1 Toroh 2016/207 academic year.

D. Limitation of the study

In this research, the researcher focuses on analyzing students’ ability in writing narrative text at the second year of SMP N 1 Toroh in 2016/2017 academic year. Theirs ability using the linguistic feature and generic structure and problem faced by the teacher and the student.

E. Significance of the Study

The researcher hopes that his research can give the benefit both for the theoretical and for the practical research.

1. Theoretical Significance

a. The result of this research can use as an input in English Education especially in writing skills.

b. The invention of this research can use as the reference for those who want to conduct the research on teaching writing ability. 2. Practical Significance

a. For the teacher, it will give contribution for English teacher and also can be reference to add more knowledge in this writing skill. b. For the students, this research can improve the students’ ability in

F. Research Paper Organization

In this research, the researcher conducts paper organization in order to make writer understand the content of the paper. The writer divides this paper into five chapters, those are:

Chapter 1: Introduction, it contains background of the study, problem statement, Objective of the study, limitation of the study, significant of the study, and research paper organization.

Chapter II: underlying theory, it involves previous study, and review of theoretical studies such as: Notion of writing, component of paragraph, type of writing, the notion of capability, writing ability, aspect of writing, and the notion of narrative text.

Chapter III: Research method, it delivers type of researcher, subject of the research, object of the study, data and data source, technique of collecting data, technique of analyzing data.

Chapter IV: Research finding and discussion, the research is elaborate into the students ability in writing narrative text at the second year of SMP N 1 Toroh in 2016/2017 academic year.
