Production wise, Indonesia is the 3rd biggest producer of cocoa in the world after Cote de'Ivoire and Ghana. Average production during 2001-2004 was 433.2 thousand ton or 18.6% of world production. Meanwhile, harvest area in Indonesia is the 5th in the world with average harvest area of 917 thousand ha, just below Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria and Brazil. Indonesia cocoa production level during 2001-2004 fluctuated. Highest production was recorded in 2003 with 695.4 thousand ton (12.3% growth). Production growth declined as much as minus 7.35% in 2004. This was caused by attack from cocoa pest that downgraded production and quality. Due to quality decline, Indonesia export for US market was sactioned with automatic detention by USD 90-150 per ton.
However, in 2005 cocoa production is expected to rise to 724.9 thousand ton with 12.53% growth. One of the factors is rise in domestic consumption and export. Other factors are growing harvest area and intensive pest extirpation.
About 50.8% of Indonesia cocoa production is exported while the rest is to satisfy domestic needs. Domestic consumption tends to increase until 2004 with 7.4 thousand ton, 35% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, export fluctuates with increasing tendency. During 2001-2003 Indonesia is the 3rd biggest exporting country after Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana with 12.2% share of world total export.
