- Your managing data (your own or by group’s)

- You think you maybe should be - Your not sure why it matters - Your not sure how best to do it

No single/simple definition of what constitutes RESEARCH DATA.

 Used to support the

production or validation of original research.

 It can be born digital, or it can be analogue(and then digitised)

 IT IS SITUATIONAL…

Your data fell into the wrong hands?

(16)
(17)

Why manage your

research data?

(18)

• Find and understand it when needed.

• Avoid unnecessary duplication.

• To validate results if required.

• So your research is visible and has impact!

• To get credit when others cited your work.

Why manage your

research data?

(19)

• To share your data for others to use and learn from.

• To make your research easier.

• To stop yourself from drowning irrelevant stuff.

• To avoid accusations of fraud or bad science.

• To avoid data loss!

Why manage your

research data?

RESEARCH DATA

MANAGEMENT(RDM)

Everyday management of research data during the

lifetime of a research project

Involves decisions about how data will be preserved and

shared after the project is

completed

(22)

RDM

• “Understood as collecting,

analysing, publishing, re-analysing, critiquing and reusing data.”

Tammaro, Anna Marie ( 2014) ‘Research Data Management in the Curriculum: an interdisciplinary approach.

(23)

RDM

• “Research data management

concerns the organization of data, from its entry to research cycle

through to the dissemination and archiving of valuable results.”

Whyte, A., Tedds, J. ( 2011) ‘Making the Case foe Research Data Management”. DDC Briefing Papers.

RDM

(26)

Why important…

Data, like journals and books , is a scholarly product.

Data(specially digital data) is fragile and easily lost.

There are growing research data

requirements imposed by funders and publishers

RDM saves time & resources in the long run.

(27)

Good management helps to prevent errors increases the quality of your analyses.

Well-managed & accessible data allows others to validate & replicate findings.

RDM facilitates sharing of research data and, when shared, data can be lead to a

valuable discoveries by others outside of the original team.

Why important…

Where do I safely keep my data from my fieldwork, as I travel home?

(30)

Individual Researcher

How can I best keep years worth of research data

secure and accessible for when I and others need to re-use it?

(31)

Research Team

How do we ensure we have

access to our research data after some of the team have left?

(32)

How do we ensure compliance to

funders for several years of open access to data?

(33)

How can our research

collaborations share data,

and make them available

once complete?

Is managing data actually a job of a university/ academic

Research projects represents an integral part of global research

knowledge base.

Academic library’s current role in providing access to the

published part of that knowledge base.

The scale of the challenge in terms of infrastructure,

Skills and culture change

requires concerted action by a range of stakeholders,

And not just university/

academic libraries.

ACADEMIC LIBRARY

A leader in RDM

(39)

…….a leader in RDM

Academic Libraries play an essential coordination role in the process of collaboration across

institution in developing RDM Program.

A facility with staff who have expertise in many issues of RDM.

Key player in data management, curation, &

preservation.

(40)

…….a leader in RDM

Have a provisioning data for research use.

Staff have existing relationship with researchers, support units & leaders across the university.

Can coordinate service across disciplines

Meet best practices in RDM

…….a leader in RDM

Academic librarians can coordinate RDM efforts beyond their institution,

Sharing lessons learned in professional groups.

Building partnerships with other universities to develop and test RDM solutions.
