HOMILY ~ AUGUST 21/22, 2021 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

THERE WAS A MAN A LONELY MAN WHO LOST HIS LOVE THROUGH HIS INDIFFERENCE

A HEART THAT CARED THAT WENT UNSHARED

UNTIL IT DIED WITHIN HIS SILENCE AND SOLITARE’S THE ONLY

GAME IN TOWN

AND EVERY ROAD THAT TAKES HIM

‘TAKES HIM DOWN WHILE LIFE GOES ON AROUND HIM EVERYWHERE

HE’S PLAYING SOLITAIRE That is what happens when we remain indifferent in our relationships. If we can- not commit, we end up alone playing soli- taire. We hear in the Second Reading today some controversial words that peo- ple tend to focus on: “Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord.” We also hear: “Husbands, love your wives even as Christ loved the Church.” We also hear: “Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

In reality, if two people are truly committed to one another in a marriage, sometimes wives have to be subordinate to their hus- bands. When your husband needs to move to another state to advance his ca- reer, sometimes the wife needs to move

with him. Sometimes husbands have to love their wives as Christ loves the Church, with that sacrificial love, and forgo that promotion for the good of the family.

That is how you hold a marriage together.

The truth is that in all of our close relation- ships, we need to commit to one another and be subordinate to one another at times for the good of the relationship.

Otherwise you may end up playing soli- taire.

In the First Reading, the people of Israel had lost their sense of commitment to the Lord. Joshua tells them that they have to decide who they are going to serve. The people looked at how the Lord had served them in the past and decided that they were going to serve the Lord, for he was their God. I think we are chal- lenged today to answer that same ques- tion. Who or what are we going to serve?

Sometimes we get side tracked. Instead of being committed to the Lord, we be- come committed to careers, or money, or possessions, or a particular group or politi- cal party. If we are committed to the Lord first, all of those other commitments fall into place.

In the Gospel Reading today, the people were committed to Jesus as long as he was healing the sick, feeding the multitudes, and turning water into wine, until things got hard. Jesus told the peo- ple about the Eucharist, eating his body and drinking his blood. This seemed like cannibalism to the people; and this was hard to accept, so many left. Jesus asked the 12, are you going to leave me, too?

Peter responds: “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” Can you say the same thing when

things get hard, when things do not seem to make any sense? Can you just trust that God is God and we are not? Can we trust God to work with us and care for us? Can we stay committed to Jesus Christ first and foremost in our lives? If we are really com- mitted to Jesus, we have to try and love and serve him by loving and serving one anoth- er. That is really hard at times, and I fre- quently fail; but I am committed to Jesus and I will keep trying.

We are going through a really difficult time right now with COVID. I am really an- gry and disappointed that we cannot go back to normal. I think most of us are long- ing to get back to normal. I wonder why God does not just solve this problem for us, but I also remember that God is God and I am not. My inclination is to judge others, blame a particular group of people or to scapegoat a group. It is their fault. But blaming and shaming is not going to help this problem. What do we need to do now?

How can we love and serve one another? I do not want to start wearing the mask again in large indoor groups; but I think I am going to put the mask back on, at least for a while, until we all figure this out. How about you?

Are you committed to Jesus even in this time when it is really hard? How are you called to love and serve the Lord by loving and serving one another?

Love & Peace, Fr. Jim

Dear Friends,

Today I offer you the newest up- dates to our Families of Parishes … As our parishes come together to form our Family of Parishes, we have begun to discuss the practical ways in which the clergy and staff will interact within the family, as well as finalizing some new leadership structure, including items such as leadership teams, key staff mis- sion and operations staff positions.

During this process, it may appear that we are losing some staff members, but at the same time, some families will be able to add positions that better serve the mission going forward. All staffing decisions are left to the discernment of each family of parishes, led by parish leadership and with assistance, as need- ed, from the Archdiocese of Detroit Cu- ria.

As our family begins to take shape, we will continue to discern and pray about how to organize various “mission direct” and “mission support” ministries.

WHAT ARE THE

“MISSION DIRECT” MINISTRIES?

To accomplish the goal of becoming a missionary church, five areas of minis- try that reflect a vibrant and evangelizing parish have been identified:

4. Family Ministries, assisting families living as domestic churches in their homes. The Director of

Family Ministry, whom we have identified as Deacon Don Esler from St. Edith will supervise those working with infant

baptism; marriage preparation; and fam- ily support group ministries.

5. Worship, facilitating the worship life of the community by coordinating and providing quality prayer and liturgical experiences. Father

Tom Belczak from St.

Kenneth, will assume the role of Director of Worship, working with each of our Music di-

rectors, and all of those working in litur- gy; parish music; prayer groups; and wake service ministries.

WHAT ARE THE “MISSION SUPPORT” MINISTRIES?

Mission Support Ministries, pri- marily support the Family of Parishes through functions that do not work di- rectly, per se, with the faithful, and are designed to give pastors, moderators, and other clergy more time for mission- ary work. The mission

support team encom- passes, but is not limited to, finance, accounting, human resources, information

technology and facility maintenance. We have now identified Julie Lupo, Parish Administrator at Our Lady of Victory as the Director of Mission Support.

Family mission support teams will be led by family mission support direc- tors and usually will be comprised of existing personnel from each of the par- ishes. Julie will serve as the single point of contact for the “one pastor” or moder- ator, and the mission support team serv- ing our entire family.

On the Missionary Trail with you, Father Denis Theroux, Pastor Our Lady of Victory Catholic Parish 1. Discipleship Formation, or what in

the past we called Faith Formation, is the overseeing of all as- pects of disciple for- mation in the family. The Director of Discipleship Formation, whom at this time we have identified as Linda Kramer, from St. Edith, with the assistance of Ellen O’Neil and Colleen Misiak, will identify, recruit and form catechists; they will as- sist the school faculty in the preparation of creative, spirit-filled liturgies and sac- ramental experiences; and other related tasks.

2. Engagement, assisting parishioners by equipping them for the service of the Gospel of Jesus

Christ. The Director of Engagement, whom we’ve identi- fied as Deacon Ric Misiak and his wife, Colleen, from Our Lady Of Victory will supervise those working in ministry placement, evangeli- zation, communica- tions, RCIA, hospitali- ty and ecumenical ministries.

3. Evangelical Charity, what you and I have known as Christian Service, is a position to ensure a full response to Catholic social teach-

ings through charity in areas of human need, both within the parish and beyond. The Di- rector of Evangelical Charity, whom we

have identified as Cindy Portis, from St.

Colette, will oversee those working in human services; community outreach;

visitation of the sick and homebound;

Stephen Ministry; and funeral luncheon ministries.
