Analysis of Address Terms in W.M Thackeray’s a Vanity Fair

ABSTRACT
Address terms are the words people used to designate the person they are talking to while they are talking to them. It depends on the relationship between the addresser, the addressee and the relatives’ status of individual involved in conversation. This study was aimed to describe: 1) address terms in W.M Thackeray’s a Vanity Fair, 2) The use of address terms among the main character in W.M Thackeray’s a Vanity Fair, 3) The factors is influence the use of address terms in W.M Thackeray’s Vanity Fair. The data were taken from W.M Thackeray’s Vanity Fair.
The researcher red the novels, selected, and collected the dialogs contained the address system, took notes, and gave coded then to the data table based on the novel, the page, and the frequency. The result shows that 1) there are nine categories of English address terms, those are: kinship term, general term, nickname, first name, last name, full name, title, pet name, and descriptive phrase. 2) The main character in W.M Thackeray’s a Vanity Fair
used kinds of address terms, such as: (a) kinship term are sister, sister Jemima, brother, father, papa, mother, mama, and my boy, (b) general term are Miss, Miss Sharp, Miss governess, Miss Sedley, Mrs. Crawley, Mrs. Osborne, Mademoiselle, sir, Mr. Joseph, Monsieur etc, (c) Nickname are Becky, Becky Sharp, Emmy, Jos, and Joe, (d) first name are Rebecca, Amelia, Joseph, Rawdon, William, and George, (e) Last name are Dobbin and Sedley, (f) Full name is Joseph Sedley, (g) Title are Sir Pitt, Captain Crawley, Major Dobbin, and Captain George, (h) pet name is dear, dear Amelia, my dear, love, darling, dearest, etc, (i) Descriptive Phrase are my poor dear suffering friend, the silly little fool, old boy, old Dod, and old fellow, etc. 3) The factors influencing the use of address terms are power, situation, social status, closeness, age, gender, and emotional situation.

Address terms adalah kata-kata orang yang digunakan untuk menunjuk seseorang yang diajak bicara saat berbicara. Hal ini digunakan tergantung pada hubungan antara pembicara, penerima dan status kerabat dari individu yang terlibat dalam percakapan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan: 1) Address terms di novel Vanity Fair oleh WM Thackeray, 2) Penggunaan
address terms di antara karakter utama di novel Vanity Fair oleh WM
Thackeray, 3) Faktor yang mempengaruhi penggunaan address terms di novel
Vanity Fairoleh WM Thackeray.
Data diambil dari novel Vanity Fair oleh WM Thackeray. Peneliti membaca novel, memilih, dan mengumpulkan dialog yang mengandung address terms, membuat catatan, dan memberikan kode untuk data tabel berdasarkan novel, halaman novel, dan frekuensi istilah nama. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 1) ada sembilan kategori sistem alamat dalam bahasa Inggris, seperti: nama kekerabatan, nama umum, nama panggilan, nama pertama, nama belakang, nama lengkap, nama jabatan, nama kesayangan, dan nama frasa deskriptif. 2) Address terms yang di gunakan di novel Vanity Fair oleh WM Thackeray yaitu: (a) nama kekerabatan seperti sister, sister Jemima,
brother, father, papa, mother, mama, dan my boy, (b) nama umum seperti
Miss, Miss Sharp, Miss governess, Miss Sedley, Mrs. Crawley, Mrs. Osborne,
Mademoiselle, sir, Mr. Joseph, Monsieur dll, (c) Nama panggilan seperti
Becky, Becky Sharp, Emmy, Jos, dan Joe, (d) nama pertama seperti Rebecca,
Amelia, Joseph, Rawdon, William, and George, (e) nama belakang seperti
Dobbin and Sedley, (f) Full name seperti Joseph Sedley, (g) nama jabatan seperti Sir Pitt, Captain Crawley, Major Dobbin, dan Captain George, (h) nama kesayangan seperti dear, dear Amelia, my dear, love, darling, dearest, dll, (i) nama frase deskriptif seperti my poor dear suffering friend, the silly little fool, old boy, old Dod, and old fellow dll. 3) Faktor yang memepengaruhi penggunaan address terms adalah, power, situasi, status sosial, kedekatan, usia, gender, dan kondisi emosi.
