Asian Science and Mathematics Olympiad for Primary Schools

21-25 November 2015 · Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia.

Introduction

In recognition of the growing significance of science and mathematics in our daily life, and in the general education of young people, and with the aim of enhancing the development of international contacts between countries within the Asian region in the field of school education in science and mathematics especially primary school, an annual science and mathematics competitions has been organized for Primary School Students; the competition is called the " Asian Science and Mathematics Olympiad for Primary Schools" or ASMOPS and is a competition among individuals and teams.

Objectives

1. To provide opportunities to Malaysia students to exchange views and to share learning experiences in mathematics and science in an international arena.

2. To provide motivation for students and teachers in schools and in all jurisdiction in teaching and learning mathematics and science while developing high-order thinking abilities.

3. To develop school-based curricula towards international standard.

4. To promote good relationships and cultural exchange among countries in the network.

Participation and Application

Students from elementary school, must not enrolled in Secondary school;aged not more than 13 years old on October 31,2015.

Participation from other countries in the competition is by invitation. Any invited city or country is entitled to send up to 4 teams (2 teams for science and 2 teams for maths). Each country teams consists of : A team leader and 16 students.

Categories of Competitions

1. Stage Theory :

• Science : Individual • Math : Individual

2. Stage Experiment / Exploration :

• Science : Team(s) • Mathematics : Teams(s)

• Science & Mathematics ( combined ) : Team(s)

The constructed problems are based on Mathematics and Science Olympiad primary school curriculum, reference books and other relevant sources, which cover intellectual, reasoning and creativity.

Competitions Paper

The participating countries are welcomed to send five (5) proposed problems each for Mathematics and Science , using Word files written in English, three(3) for the individual contest and another two(2) for the team contest for both the subjects on or before9th October 2015to allow the ASMOPS Committee to do the consideration

and preparation of competition papers. The team leaders must avoid using the exact proposed problems they submit to the organizers for training their contestants.

We will provide a list of terms in English and allow leader from other country to translate the term in particular language.the terms might/might not used in the paper. Students are not allowed to bring any dictionary inside the exam hall accept the translation list.

***USD 50 will be deducted from each teams registration fees for those who are willing to send qualified questions within the due date.

Letter of Participation and Registration Forms

Interested countries in joining this competition should confirm their participation by: 1. Sending a letter of confirmation before31stAugust 2015

2. Sending the name lists of students, team leader, deputy leader and tutors before

30thSeptember 2015.

3.Questions submission before9thOctober 2015.

3. Notifying the details of travel scheduled flights before30thSeptember 2015.

Registration Fee and Facilities

The participation fee for the Olympiad is USD250/team to cover the cost of meals, accommodation, local transportation and sightseeing (city tour) for the teams (four students) during the official period of the ASMOPS 2015 from November 21-25, 2015.

Only 1(one) team leader will be charged free for the cost for each country.

Teams will be responsible for their own travel expenses to and from Kuala Lumpur. Each observer, teacher, parent, pedagogical leader, and additional team leader have to pay USD550/person to cover meals, accommodation, and local transportation from November 21-25, 2015

Juries

The juries appointed by the organizing committees are as follows: 1. The central committee of Asian experts

2. Math and Science professionals from countries that participate in the competition. 3. Math and Science experts and professionals from Malaysia.

Awards and Medals

The total number of marks awarded for the Individual Competition should be 40 (forty) points for short answer/multiple choice questions and 60 (sixty) points for long answer problems. The marks awarded for the Team Competition should be 10 (ten) points for each problem. The competition organizer shall determine how the marks are allocated within each examination.

The Organizing Committee establishes minima (expressed in points) for Gold Medals, Silver Medals, Bronze Medals and Honorable Mentions. The participant who obtains the highest score will receive a special prize .

Syllabus

Science:

1. Science skills and methodology, general health (nutrition, common disease and how to prevent it).

2. General environment issue (deforestation, natural resource management, pollution, water and carbon cycles, etc).

3. Basic ecology (habitat, interaction, food chain, and food web, population, ecosystem, life cycle, etc).

4. Physiology (photosynthesis and respiration).

5. Current technology development (GMO, biotech, bio fuel, satellite, etc). 6. Human anatomy and function (skeleton and movement, olfactory system,

auditory system, mouth, eyes, circulatory, digestive system, skin, respiratory system) and human disease.

7. Classification of organism based on their food, anatomy, systematic, reproduction system and habitat.

8. Mechanics (motion of object, static fluid, gas).

10. The earth planet (structure, surface, process of earth formation, water cycle, renewable resources, climate, seasons, gravitation, wind).

11. Electricity and magnetism (application, models).

12. Matter (properties, phase transformation (solid-liquid-gas), physical, chemical, and biological transformation).

13. Thermal properties (temperature, thermometer, energy, conduction, convection, radiation).

14. Light (property, vision, colour).

15. Force (shape of material changes, magnetic, gravitation, frictional forces) 16. Energy (kinetic, potential, heat, sound, renewable, energy conversion). Mathematics:

1. Arithmetic: integers, rational numbers and their representations (fraction, decimal, and percentage), (number) factorization, greatest common divisor, least common multiple, number ordering, and ratio/proportion.

2. Geometry: angle and its measure, area and perimeter, triangle (including triangle inequality), quadrilateral, parallelogram, trapezoid, circles, cube, parallelepiped nets, symmetry, reflection and rotation, scaling, and similarity. 3. Data and measurement: data representation, mean (average), median,

modus, and min/max.

4. Combinatory: basic counting principle and probability, simple application of pigeonhole principle, and Venn diagram.

5. Logic: basic logic and deduction skill
