ABSTRACT

29 not appropriate with the student’s learning style.

Problem:

I had difficulty in making a 9th grade student from Waringin Junior High School

comprehend grammar lessons in Excellent Privat Les.

Effects:

1. The student got bad marks in the examinations at school. 2. The student’s parents were not

satisfied with the result of my work in teaching their son. 3. I felt disappointed when I could

not reach my targets as the student’s private teacher.

Positive Effects:

1. The student can understand the previous meeting’s materials. 2. The student will be more

confident in doing examinations. 3. The student will get good scores

in his examinations at school.

Potential Solution 1: I will review the assignment from the previous meeting in the beginning of a private lesson time to remind the student about the previous material.

Negative Effects:

1. I do not have enough time to give evaluation of the lessons that I have given to the student, to check the student’s learning process.

Positive Effects:

1. The student learns better and more quickly.

2. The student will participate actively in learning.

Potential Solution 2: I will use teaching methods that are appropriate with the student’s learning styles which are bodily-kinesthetic and verbal-linguistic.

Negative Effects:

1. Activities that accommodate both of his learning styles, which are kinesthetic and verbal, can take quite a long time

2. The student will feel tired at the end of the lesson time.

Positive Effects:

1. The student will feel refreshed and ready to learn after he has enough time to rest before the lesson begins.

2. The student can concentrate better on the lesson.

3. The student can learn the lesson better.

Potential Solution 3: I will give him a chance to take a rest before learning.

Negative Effects:

1. I will review the assignment from the previous meeting in the beginning of a private lesson time to remind the student about the previous material.

2. I will use teaching methods that are appropriate with the student’s learning styles which are bodily-kinesthetic and verbal-linguistic.

APPENDIX B:

TRANSCRIPTION OF THE INTERVIEW

Chan : Selamat pagi bapak willy,

Willy : Ya, pagi-pagi Chandra. Gimana kemarin soal si Auryn?

Chan : wah, nilai ulangan kemarin saya masih belum tahu pa, kata si anaknya sih pertemuan berikutnya baru dibagiin pa.

mengerjakan soalnya. Anak les istri saya juga …..(out of context)…

Willy : ya, awalnya sih waktu dulu ketika saya masih kuliah, ya sama seperti kamu.

(out of context)…hingga akhirnya saya balik lagi untuk ngelesin lagi.

saya. Sampai pacar saya pun juga setuju untuk …(out of context)… di tahun 2007an yah kalo ga salah, saya bisa buka 1 cabang baru nih untuk usaha saya di jalan aksan no, 17a. saya terus merekrut asisten yang bagus, yang ga cuman pengen ngisi waktu doang tapi yang bener bener fokus untuk ngajar. Sampe sekarang, saya udah punya, bntar yaa (liat buku catatan) ya 40 orang asisten.

Si anak ini tu datang dari …(out of context)…

Willy : hmm, iya.

(8)

34

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

This term paper discusses my difficulty in making a 9th grade student

from Waringin Junior High School comprehend grammar lessons I gave

him from 7 January 2013 until 7 March 2013 in a private course named

Excellent Privat Les. For this private course, I as the teacher came to the

student’s house. The experience that I had during the internship is that I

had to teach five 9th graders who were soon to take the National Exam.

However, I found a difficulty to teach a boy named Auryn who went to

Waringin Junior High School. He was very difficult to comprehend the

grammar lessons that I taught. He often said that he did not understand

the lessons that I explained, even though I have explained the material to

him using the same technique like the technique I used when teaching the

other students. Besides, he was often seen sleepy when I explained the

material, and I often noticed that he did not concentrate on the lesson

when I was explaining it. In this situation, it was difficult for me to make

(14)

2

Maranatha Christian University

I chose this topic for several reasons. As a teacher, I should be able to

handle many kinds of students. Also, as a tutor, I have to make my

students comprehend the entire lessons which I give to them. However, I

found that the student was hard to understand the materials I gave him

even though I have taught him intensively. Then, the other reason is

because when I fail to handle the student, the institution where I do the

internship and the parents are not satisfied with my job, which can make

me lose my student. In addition, it is important to find solution to this problem because the student also will get a great benefit when he can

comprehend the grammar lessons easily. It can help him to achieve a

great result in the National Examination. I will analyze this problem

critically and systematically, based on the principles of scientific research,

so that my research can determine the best solutions to solve my problem.

B. Identification of the Problem

I want to convey three questions that will relate to the situation and the

problem that will be analyzed.

1. Why did I get difficulty in making a 9th grade student from Waringin

Junior High School comprehend grammar lessons?

2. How did the problem affect the student, the parents, and myself as

the teacher?

3. How can I overcome the difficulty in making a 9th grade student

(15)

C. Objectives and Benefits of the Study

The objective of this term paper is to recognize the causes and effects

of the problem, and to provide the best solutions for the problem. There

are some benefits for the institution, the readers, and also for me as a

writer of this term paper. The benefit for Excellent Privat Les is that the

teachers who work for this institution will know what to do to solve a similar

problem. The benefit for the readers is they can apply the best solution to

teach their students or their children who have difficulty in understanding

grammar lessons. Then, the benefit for me as the writer is I will be able to

handle other students who also have a difficulty in comprehending

grammar lessons in the institution where I work as a teacher.

D. Description of the Institution

Excellent Privat Les was founded by Mr. Willy Wihardja. Since high

school, Mr. Wihardja had an interest in teaching, especially in teaching

English. Previously, Mr. Wihardja worked as a tutor. The institution was

built in 2007; previously, he only had three assistants who helped him to

run the business. After that Mr. Wihardja tried to improve the working

system within his institution to avoid deficiencies and also to enhance his

and his assistants’ teaching techniques. When the institution became

well-known and trusted by many parents to help their children, Mr. Wihardja as

the owner of this institution tried to hire other qualified assistants to help

bigger and more systematical now. Mr. Wihardja now has 40 assistants,

and each of the assistants teaches around 8 students.

This institution has two locations for its business. The first is located on

Jalan Gempol Asri Raya no. 20-I, and the second is located on Jalan

Aksan no. 17-A. Nowadays, the main lessons given by this institution are

English, Mathematics, Physics, and also Chemistry. This description about

the institution is based on the interview with Mr. Willy Wihardja on 22

February 2013.

E. Method of the Study

The writing of this term paper uses supporting analysis data gathered

from library research and field research. From field research, the data are

from my observation during the internship, recorded in the internship

journal and also from personal interview with Mr. Willy Wihardja. From

library research, the data gathered are from printed and Internet

resources.

F. Limitation of the Study

This study focuses on a 9th grade Waringin Junior High School student

whom I taught during my internship from 7 January 2013 until 7 March

2013. The discussion focuses on the problem I experienced in making this

G. Organization of the Term Paper

This term paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter talks

about background of the study, identification of the problem, the objective

and some benefits of the study, history of institution, method of the study

and also the organization of the term paper. The second chapter

discusses the causes and also the effects of my problem. The third

chapter discusses potential solutions, with their positive effects and also

negative effects. Then, the last chapter discusses the conclusion of my

CHAPTER IV

CONCLUSION

In previous chapters, I have discussed about my difficulty in making a

9th grade student from Waringin Junior High School comprehend grammar

lessons in a private course I gave to him from 7 January 2013 until 7

March 2013. The causes of the problem are the student was too tired, the

student felt bored, and I taught with a method that was not appropriate

with the student’s learning styles. This problem also gave some effects.

Those effects are the student got bad marks in the examinations at school,

the student’s parents were not satisfied with the result of my work in

teaching their son, and I felt disappointed when I could not reach my

targets as the student’s private teacher. To solve the problem, I give three

potential solutions. The first potential solution is I will review the

assignments from the previous meeting in the beginning of a private

lesson time to remind the student about the previous material. The second

potential solution is I will use teaching methods that are appropriate with

the student’s learning styles which are bodily-kinesthetic and

verbal-linguistic. Then, the third potential solution is I will give him a chance to

(19)

21

Maranatha Christian University

In my opinion, the best potential solution to solve my problem is

combination of all the potential solutions. First of all, I will give him a

chance to take a rest before learning, so that he can fall refreshed and

ready to learn. After that, I will review the assignment from the previous

meeting in the beginning of a private lesson time to remind the student

about the previous material. Then, I will use teaching methods that are

appropriate with the student’s learning styles which are bodily-kinesthetic

and verbal-linguistic to teach a new material to him.

I choose to apply all of the potential solutions because when all of them

are applied, those potential solutions will support one another and will

create an effective learning to help the student to understand the lessons

easily. If I only give a review about the previous lesson given, the student

will not be enthusiastic enough to study, and he will still feel tired because

I do not give him time to rest. Some problems will appear if I only apply the

second potential solution. If I only use the second potential solution,

student will still feel tired in the study hours, and it will be hard for him to

concentrate on his lessons because he does not have time to rest; also,

the student will forget easily about the previous lessons given because

there is no reviewing. Furthermore, some problems will occur if I only

apply the third potential solution because the student will still not

comprehend the previous lessons if there is no reviewing, and he will not

be enthusiastic to the study because I do not use the right teaching

methods. If I only apply the first and the second potential solutions, the

(20)

22

Maranatha Christian University

concentrate maximally during the learning time. If I only apply the second

and the third potential solutions, some material from the previous meeting

will be easily forgotten by the student. Then, if I only apply the first and the

third potential solutions, the student will not be enthusiastic enough in

learning, and he will not understand about the material given. Thus, it is

shown that applying all of the potential solutions is the best way to make

the student comprehend the lessons.

Combination of all these potential solutions is the best one. However,

there is one thing that must be anticipated, which is the time for teaching

has to be extended. It is because I need longer time to review the previous

assignment in the beginning of the sessions, to apply some teaching

activities which are appropriate to the student’s learning styles when I

deliver new materials, and also to give an evaluation to the student at the

end of the sessions. I suggest that the teacher should provide longer time
