CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Humans as social beings communicate with each other in their daily life. We communicate and interact in various ways, one of them by using language. Without language
is difficult for humans to communicate. We can express our ideas, opinions, or emotions which we want to convey by language.
Palmer (1976:5) says: “Language can be viewed as a communication system that
relates something to be communicated with something that communicate, a message on the one hand with a set of signs or symbols on the other”. When learning a language, we learn the
agreed upon meanings of certain strings of sounds and we learn how to combine these meaningful units into larger units that also convey meaning. The field in linguistics that studies the meaning is semantics. As stated by Saeed (2009:3) “Semantics is the study of
meaning communicated through language”.
Semantics as the study of linguistics objects, such as word, phrase and sentence in a
language. In other words, semantics studies the meaning of word phrase and sentence. Meaning of a phrase or sentence depends on meaning of its words and how the words structurally combined. One part of Semantics knowledge is meaning properties and relations
.In this thesis, the writer explained about both meaning properties and meaning relation. “Meaning properties are one of several features or components which together can be
the other” (Bolinger, 1968:11). It includes synonymy, polysemy, homonymy, hyponymy, and antonymy (Palmer 1976:57-81).
There are many objects that we can analyze that have meaning properties and relation such as: novel, short story, songs, newspaper, and magazine. This thesis analyze songs, more
precisely is Paramore’s Songs Album Brand New Eyes.
Paramore is an American rock band from Franklin, Tennessee, formed in 2004. The band currently consists of lead vocalist Hayley Williams, bassist Jeremy Davis, and guitarist
Taylor York. Brand New Eyes is the third album by American rock band Paramore, released September 29, 2009 through Fueled by Ramen in the United States and Canada.
Below are some examples meaning properties and lexical relations found in Paramore’s songs album Brand New Eyes:

Sentence (1), When I was younger I saw my daddy cry refers to meaningfulness because the main idea of the sentence can be easily recognized, and it does not reflect another meaning. It has no characteristics of anomaly and ambiguity. The existence of this expression
is to state that she saw her daddy cried when she was young. The type of sentence is complex sentence. Sentence (2), a. I best be on my way out (Ignorance) b. The worst part is that this,
this could be you (Feeling Sorry) refers to antonymy because it contains opposite meaning,
’most excellent thing or person; to the greatest extent’. Sentence (3), a. You can’t be too careful anymore (Careful) b. You’ve got to reach out a little more (Careful) refers to
homonymy because the words two and too have different meaning but they have the same pronunciations. The words too /tu:/ means also; to a higher degree or more than is allowed;
The word two /tu:/ means the number. Sentence (4), I could follow you to the beginning just to relive the start refers to synonymy because it contains nearly the same meaning, that is
beginning and start. Beginning means ‘starting point’ and start means ‘begin doing
something or (cause something to) start happening’.
In Paramore’s Song Album Brand New Eyes we can find many kinds of meaning
properties and relation that is why the writer would like to analyze the meaning properties and its relation found in Paramore’s Song Album Brand New Eyes. The writer is interested to choose this album to be analyzed because this song’s album makes Paramore become
famous, Brand New Eyes is the outpouring of the heart of Hayley Williams (Paramore’s vocalist) from her life and experience that she has been through. In addition Paramore has
won many awards for a wide variety of music awards such as: Outstanding achievements for American artists in the record industry in American Music Awards (2013), Album Rock
award for “Brand New Eyes” at the Teen Choice Awards (2010), Best Alternative in MTV
Europe Music Awards (2010), Best International Band in Shockwaves NME Awards (2010), International Artist in MTV Video Music Brazil (2008), Favorite Rock Band award at the
36th People’s Choice Awards and many more. All of the awards prove that Paramore has a good quality in music. Paramore tells to the readers about life and give message in their lyrics that is why many people like them. It can be seen from the direct and indirect messages

Based on the background of the analysis, some problems of the analysis have been identified
as follows:

1.4 Objectives of the Study
Today as a language expands in many different ways, and produce different and new words. One of the braches of linguistics that studies the meaning which is expressed in
language is called semantics. In studying the semantics properties, meaning properties is one of it which is interesting and important to be observed. By writing down this analysis, the writer does expect that she can achieve some objectives. The objectives of the analysis deal

1.5 Scope of the Study
There are many parts of semantics to be analyzed, such as literal meaning, non literal meaning, lexical relations, meaning properties, and so on. Therefore, it is very important to
limit the scope of analysis in order to get a clear and satisfactory result. This thesis focuses to analyze meaning properties and relations that exist in Paramore’s song album Brand New Eyes.
There are some types of meaning properties and relation. Therefore, this thesis refers to Leech’s theory (1977) that classifies meaning properties into meaningfulness, anomaly,
contradictory, ambiguity, and redundancy; and Palmer’s theory (1976) that classifies meaning relations into synonymy, polysemy, homonymy, hyponymy, antonymy.
1.6. Significances of the Study
The significances which will be expected from this thesis in theoretically is the thesis
can explore and add knowledge for student of language in terms of semantics, especially in both terms of meaning properties and meaning relations. The reader of this thesis can understand how to describe the semantic component of a word or how to define the semantic
field of a word. Practically, it is expected that this thesis will be useful reference for those who are interested in analyzing meaning properties and meaning relations. This thesis can
