ABSTRACT
The river is a form of aquatic ecosystems has an important role in the hydrological cycle and serves as a water catchment area, so that the condition of the river is strongly influenced by the characteristics possessed by the environment. Otomona River is one of the rivers in the district of Tembagapura in Mimika Regency flows stream fast enough and used to bring sand mining waste (tailings) of the mining activity from PT. Freeport Indonesia to deposition area before heading to sea. This leads to the ecosystem of Otomona River vulnerable and can lead to a decrease in river water quality and increase the environmental load in the river area and affect the content of the element in the bottom of the river, physical and chemical factors.
A legal limit of Total Suspended Solid (TSS) in fresh water that has been stipulated in Government Regulation Number 82 of year 2001 was 50 mg/L (Class II) has been exceeded at the mouth of the river, in the amount of 1,300 mg/L (WALHI, 2006). As even as the content of dissolved copper in the same spot at 22 µg/L (Standard Quality= 20 µg/L). This has an impact on public health around the watershed Otomona either directly or indirectly way.
This research evaluates the efforts that have been and will be carried out to reduce the pollution that occurs in Otomona River so the river water quality can be maintained at a quality standard that has been set by the Government. It is necessary for the analysis of parameters of industrial waste on the Otomona River, such parameters include degree of acidity (pH), temperature, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), COD, mercury (Hg), and total Coli form (performed on wells). Furthermore, water quality can be determined using the method Pollution Index. For environmental aspects will provide a descriptive analysis of the pollution prevention and control measures. While the study of the health aspects of using the EHRA to the incidence of diseases associated with water quality of the river and the handler needs to be done to maintain the quality of local public health.
