ABSTRACT

This study is aimed to investigate the kinds of rewards that the teacher

implements in motivating the students and the students’ responses to the teacher’s

rewards. The research applies qualitative study in one Junior High School in

Cilegon. This study involved an EFL teacher and first grade students in that

school as the subjects. In order to gain the data, observation and interview were

conducted. This study shows that kinds of rewards implemented by the teacher in

English learning are tangible and intangible rewards. The students respond the

implementation of rewards positively when it is delivered properly. Moreover,

when rewards implemented properly, they can enhance students’ motivation in

learning English. This study suggests that teacher can use rewards as alternative

way to enhance the students’ motivation in learning English.

ABSTRAK

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui macam-macam penghargaan reward

yang seorang Guru berikan dalam memotivasi siswa dan respon siswa terhadap

penghargaan yang di berikan Guru. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif

yang dilakukan di salah satu Sekolah Menengah Pertama di Cilegon. Penelitian ini

melibatkan seorang guru Bahasa Inggris dan siswa kelas 1 di sekolah tersebut

sebagai subjek. Untuk mengumpulkan data, dilakukan observasi dan wawancara.

Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa berbagai macam reward digunakan oleh Guru

dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris adalah tangible dan intangible rewards.Siswa

merespon positif pemberian reward tersebut ketika reward tersebut diberikan

dengan tepat. Selanjutnya, ketika reward tersebut diberikan secara tepat, maka

reward tersebut dapat meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam pembelajaran Bahasa

Inggris. Penelitian ini menyarankan bahwa Guru bisa menggunakan reward

sebagai cara alternatif untuk meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam pembelajaran

Bahasa Inggris.
