THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PICTIONARY GAME
FOR TEACHING VOCABULARY

The aim of this research was to find out the effectiveness of Pictionary game for teaching vocabulary. This research used quasi experimental involving thirty students of grade VII E as experimental class and thirty students of grade VII G as control class. Pictionary game was applied in experimental class while control class was taught by using conventional technique. Test was used for collecting the data, namely pre-test and post-test, and the instrument was tried out to some of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Pekuncen which was aimed at knowing the validity, realibility, and item difficulty of the instrument. The test consisted of 30 multiple choices items. After data was taken, it was analyzed using t-test formula. The result of t-test computation at the level of significance of 0.05 with degree of freedom 58 = 1.671 was 1.747 which was higher than t-table (1.671), therefore it could be concluded that Pictionary game was effective for teaching vocabulary at the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Pekuncen in academic year 2016/2017.

INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Research
Language is a useful tool to communicate with others. One of the languages is English, it is considered as an international language. Therefore, English is as a means of communication with people from other countries. By mastering English, people can communicate with other people especially with foreign people easily and it can decrease misunderstanding while communicate. In Indonesia, English is a foreign language. Learning foreign language is an integrated process of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, writing, and reading. Nevertheless, the students should able to master the language components. They are structure, pronunciation, and vocabulary. Then, to support the four skills above, we need vocabulary.
