ABSTRACT
Introduction: Flexibility is a joint's ability to move through space in full motion. Flexibility is influence by some factors, including body’s fat tissue. Martial art’s player require good flexibility to move through space in full motion.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to find out the association between body mass index and martial art’s players flexibility at Merpati Putih in University of North Sumatra.
Method: This was a cross sectional study with the sampling method used was consecutive sampling.
Result: There are 56 people from martial art’s players at Merpati Putih in University of North Sumatra that met the inclusion criteria , found that respondents with normoweight had good flexibility were 28 people (71.7%), while respondents with overweight had good flexibility were 10 people (58.8 %). By using Chi-Square test, there was a significant association between body mass index with flexibility with p = 0.03 (p < 0.05).Still, by spearman correlation test showed negative correlation between body mass index with the flexibility with r = -0.291 and p = 0.030 (p < 0.05) so the level of correlation is weak.
Conclusion: However this study found that there was a significant association between body mass index with flexibility.
