Phrases are the basic patterns to build sentence. There are several types of phrase and each type has an important point to build a sentence. One of them is prepositional phrase. Prepositional phrase is a group of related words that begin with preposition and end with the object of a preposition. Although it is very simple phrase, the learners still have difficulties to learn this phrase.
The objectives of the research are to find out the types, to find out the elements and to describe the function of prepositional phrase found in the Social Economic articles of the Jakarta Post.
In this research, the writer used descriptive qualitative research. The data of the research was prepositional phrases in the social economics articles and the data source of the research was the Social Economic articles of the Jakarta Post.
The result of this research shows that from 13 types of prepositional phrases the writer only found 12 types in the social economic articles, they are possession or origin (103), place-position-direction (77), time (36), purpose (33), manner (15) accompaniment (10), source (10), addition (9), comparison (8), agency (4), cause or reason (3), condition (2), instrument (0). Beside that, the writer concluded that there are two word class of prepositional phrase. There are the main (prepostion and pronoun or noun) and the optional word class of prepositional phrase (determiner, adjective, adverb and conjuction). Then, the functions of prepositional phrase found in the social economic articles of the Jakarta post are adjectival function (206), adverbial function (72) and nominal function (32).

Frase merupakan pola dasar dalam membentuk suatu kalimat. Ada bermacam-macam frase di dalam kalimat dan setiap frase memiliki peran penting. Salah satu frase tersebut adalah preposisional frase. Prepositional frase adalah gabungan kata yang dimulai dengan preposisi dan diakhiri dengan objek dari preposisi tersebut. Meskipun frase ini terbilang sangat sederhana, namun masih banyakpelajar yang mengalami kesulitan dalam mempelajarinya.
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mencari tahu tipe-tipe, element serta untuk mendiskripsikan fungsi dari preposisional frase yang ada dalam artikel sosial ekonomi pada Jakarta Post.
Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data dari penelitian ini dalam bentuk preposisional frase pada artikel sosial ekonomi dan sumber data penelitian adalah teks artikel sosial ekonomi pada Jakarta Post.
Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dari 13 tipe preposisional frase, penulis hanya menemukan 12 tipe pada artikel sosial ekonomi, yaitu: possession or origin (103), place-position-direction (77), time (36), purpose (33), manner (15) accompaniment (10), source (10), addition (9), comparison (8), agency (4), cause or reason (3), condition (2), instrument (0). Selain itu, penulis juga menyimpulkan bahwa ada dua komponen dalam prepositional frase. Pertama, komponen inti yang terdiri dari preposisi dan kata ganti atau kata benda. Kedua, komponen pilihan yang meliputi determiner, kata sifat, kata keterangan dan kata sambung. Kemudian, penulis juga menemukan ketiga fungsi preposisi dalam penelitian ini, yaitu adjectival fungsi (206), adverbial fungsi(72) and nominal fungsi (32).

guru juga harus lebih berhati-hati dalam mengajarkan fungsi preposisional frase karena sedikit perbedaan antara nominal fungsi dan adverbial fungsi.
