Global Forecast

Total Rain and Snow

September to November 2014

Produced by the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre and

The International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI)

Issued Aug 2014

IRI’s next forecast:

18 September 2014

For September to November, there is an increased chance of unusually dry conditions over parts of Asia, particularly Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines. Australia and several Pacific islands are also forecasted to be unusually dry.

Unusually wet conditions are more likely in the majority of the Pacific islands, parts of the Horn of Africa, parts of Southern Peru, a portion of mid USA and the Azores Islands.

Forecasts show a 70% chance that an El Niño will develop by December/January/February, but it will probably be relatively weak. Typical impacts of El Niños can be found here:

iridl.ldeo.columbia.edu/maproom/IFRC/FIC/elninorain.html. Every El Niño is different and we suggest continual

monitoring of forecasts to see what rainfall effects an El Niño could have in your region in the coming months.

Key Messages

The RCRC’s ‘Strategy 2020’ emphasizes both climate change

adaptation (the main focus for humanitarian work) and mitigation.

What is the difference? Adaptation: adjusting and preparing for the

impacts

of climate change; mitigation: tackling the

causes

of

climate change

It is the most vulnerable among the vulnerable that will be

the most affected by climate change – with less area to live,

less food to eat, fewer resources to combat the changes, the

impacts will be felt more acutely by poorer communities.

The Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre:

The RCRC Climate

Centre was created as a reference centre to provide technical

support to the RCRC family on climate-related matters. With a small

HQ in the Hague and staff situated around the world, it supports the

RCRC Movement to understand and address the humanitarian
