ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to reveal the differences between male and female students’ motivation in learning TOEFL and Speaking. The participants of this study are the students in Faculty of Letter Soegijapranata Catholic University batch 2009, 2010, and 2011. This research used quantitative method. The investigation was done through questionnaires and students’ marks in TOEFL and Speaking Class. The questionnaire was adapted from Gardner’s Attitude/Motivation Test Battery:

International AMTB in 2004. The questionnaire contains favorable and unfavorable statements. The writer analyzes the first data to reveal the influence of sex in TOEFL and Speaking achievement. The result shows that there is no significant difference in Female and Male’s achievement in TOEFL and Speaking. The writer analyzes the second data using SPSS 16.0. The result shows that most of the students in Faculty of Letters students have high motivation in learning languages. Another result shows that male tend to have higher motivation than female do. The last result shows that female students tend to have integrative motivation while male students tend to have instrumental motivation.

ABSTRAK

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perbedaan motivasi antara mahasiswa pria dan wanita dalam TOEFL dan Speaking. Responden dari penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Fakultas Sastra Universitas Katolik Soegijapranata angkatan 2009, 2010, dan 2011. Melalui metode quantitative, penelitian ini menggunakan kuesioner dan nilai mahasiswa dalam pelajaran TOEFL dan Speaking. Kuesioner yang digunakan diambil dari Gardner’s Attitude/Motivation Test Battery:

International AMTB in 2004. Kuesioner ini berisi statement favorable dan unfavorable. Penulis menganalisa data pertama untuk mengetahui pengaruh sex terhadap pencapaian TOEFL dan Speaking. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa tidak ada pengaruh signifikan dalam perbedaan sex terhadap hasil TOEFL dan Speaking.

Penulis menganalisa data kedua menggunakan SPSS 16.0. Hasilnya menunjukan bahwa hampir seluruh mahasiswa di Fakultas Sastra mempunyai motivasi tinggi dalam belajar bahasa. Hasil yang lain menunjukan bahwa jenis kelamin laki laki motivasinya cenderung lebih baik daripada perempuan. Hasil terakhir menunjukkan bahwa perempuan cenderung mempunyai motivasi integrative sedangkan laki laki cenderung mempunyai motivasi instrumental.
