Regulation 1 Definitions

For the purpose s o f this Annex :

1 Oil mean s petroleu m i n an y for m includin g crud e oil , fue l oil , sludge , oi l refus e an d refine d product s other tha n thos e petrochemical s whic h ar e subjec t t o th e provision s o f Annex I I o f the presen t Convention ) and, withou t limiting the generality of the foregoing, include s the substances liste d i n appendi x I t o this Annex.

2 Crude oil mean s an y liqui d hydrocarbo n mixtur e occurrin g naturall y i n th e eart h whethe r o r no t treated to rende r i t suitable fo r transportation an d includes :

.1 crud e oil fro m whic h certai n distillat e fractions ma y hav e bee n removed ; an d .2 crud e oi l t o whic h certai n distillat e fraction s ma y hav e bee n added .

3 Oily mixture mean s a mixtur e wit h an y oi l content .

4 Oil fuel means an y oil use d a s fuel i n connectio n wit h th e propulsio n an d auxiliar y machiner y of the shi p in which suc h oi l i s carried.

5 Oil tanker mean s a shi p constructe d o r adapte d primaril y t o carr y oi l i n bul k i n it s carg o space s an d includes combination carriers , an y "NILS tanker" as defined i n Annex I I o f the present Convention an d any gas carrier as define d i n regulatio n 3.2 0 o f chapter II- 1 o f SOLAS 7 4 (a s amended) , whe n carryin g a carg o o r par t cargo of oil i n bulk .

6 Crude oil tanker mean s a n oi l tanke r engage d i n th e trad e o f carrying crud e oil .

10 Nearest land. 18 Segregated ballast means the ballas t water introduce d int o a tank which i s completel y separate d from th e cargo oi l an d oi l fue l syste m an d whic h i s permanentl y allocate d t o th e carriag e o f ballas t o r t o th e carriag e of ballas t o r cargoe s othe r tha n oi l o r noxiou s liqui d substance s a s variousl y define d i n th e Annexe s o f th e present Convention .

19 Length (L) means 96 % o f th e tota l lengt h o n a waterlin e a t 85 % o f th e leas t moulde d dept h measure d from th e to p o f the keel , o r th e lengt h fro m th e foresid e o f th e ste m t o th e axi s o f th e rudde r stoc k o n tha t waterline, i f that be greater. I n ships designed with a rake of keel the waterline on which this length i s measured shall b e parallel t o the designed waterline. The lengt h (L) shal l b e measured i n metres .

32 Oil residue (sludge) tank mean s a tan k whic h hold s oi l residu e (sludge ) fro m whic h sludg e ma y b e disposed directl y throug h th e standar d discharg e connectio n o r an y othe r approve d mean s o f disposal.

33 Oily bilge water mean s wate r whic h ma y b e contaminate d b y oi l resultin g fro m thing s suc h a s leakag e or maintenanc e wor k i n machiner y spaces . An y liqui d enterin g th e bilg e syste m includin g bilg e wells , bilg e piping, tan k top o r bilg e holdin g tanks i s considere d oil y bilg e water.

34 Oily bilge water holding tank mean s a tan k collectin g oil y bilg e wate r prio r t o it s discharge , transfe r o r disposal.
